Volkswagen is recalling over 177,000 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from the 2024 and 2025 model years because an improperly installed part could melt and increase the risk of a fire.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

The problem is due to a plastic engine cover that might have been replaced incorrectly after a repair. If the cover comes loose, it could come into contact with extremely hot surfaces and increase the risk of a fire. Drivers may also notice a burning smell coming from the engine compartment.

To fix the issue, Volkswagen dealerships will simply remove the plastic engine cover, free of charge. The automaker says the repair should take less than an hour. According to documents provided by Volkswagen to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there have been six reports of melting and/or “thermal cases” on affected vehicles.
