Talking Cars 517: Driving the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Plus, our experts answer a question about the best used car for a teenage driver
Main theme: In this podcast episode, we give our first impressions of the 2026 Volkswagen Jetta GLI. The unique twist here is that this car is the last manual-transmission Jetta to be sold in the U.S.
The podcast panelists reminisce about the last VW GTI they tested—which was also equipped with a manual—and describe the infinite sadness that comes with another three-pedal model disappearing from our shores. Indeed, there aren’t many sporty four-door sedans of this ilk left, just the Acura Integra, BMW M3, Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing, Honda Civic Si, Hyundai Elantra N, and Subaru WRX. (There’s also the Mazda3, but it’s not quite in the same league as the others.)
But sparks fly when the Talking Cars crew debates whether or not the GLI’s manual transmission is worth it. Some heap praise on the car’s playful, fun-to-drive nature, while others wish that the shifter were more satisfying to use. The GLI is also available with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which, some posit, barely dilutes the driving thrills.
Regardless of the gearbox, the GLI deserves accolades for its crisp handling, powerful and responsive 228-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and comfortable and supportive seats. Some added bonuses that you might not expect from this sports sedan include an EPA-estimated 29 mpg overall, an unusually accommodating rear seat, and a surprisingly large trunk.
Audience question: Our oldest son is of driving age, and within the next year or so, we’ll be looking to add a used car to our household for him to drive. We want to spend no more than $20,000, and—this is non-negotiable—the car must have a manual transmission. Suggestions?
