T he world needs more small trucks. They’re easier to park and maneuver and cost less to feed than full-sized behemoths, like the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500. But then the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins came along with the first modern compact truck redesign in many years. GM had Rocky Mountain high hopes for this truck, and sales have been strong.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Chevrolet Colorado owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"When cold, and shifted into drive or reverse, it jerks into motion quickly. This problem stops once the vehicle is warmed up."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)

"The problem started shortly after I purchased the vehicle but I dropped it off at the dealer and they changed the fluid and so far we have not had a reoccurance of the problem."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Base 3.6-L V6)

"at startup, there is a large bump and at about 1500 RPMs there is a shuttering until it shifts"

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"vibration - fluid change corrected the issue"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Service tech stated transmission fluid from the factory tended to attract moisture in southern climates. With initial start up and motion, vibration from transmission was noted as well as when interstate driving at about 60 mph when increasing speed. At 2800 miles, brought it to the dealer. They flushed the transmission X 2 and replaced it with a newly engineered transmission fluid that was moisture resistant. This corrected the problem. Shifts smoothly now without any vibration."

Chris F., AL (2019 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"Transmission has a lag when first starting out. Ok after warmed up"

Anonymous, MN (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission would rumble and vibrate, originally at about 50mph. Over time it became evident at most speeds."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)

"there was a slight delay in shifting"

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Vehicle would stutter under load. Technical service bulletin called for replacing transmission fluid. Dealer replaced fluid and it fixed the problem."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission seems to shutter or skip/hesitate when going up hill. Dealer says it's normal for this model. It's definitely not a normal condition for any type of new vehicle."

Anonymous, NS (2019 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"In regards to the back up camera I have had on occasion the screen go blank and a message came up saying to get the camera serviced. Being that the car is just over a year old these problems shouldn't occur. But for the most part the system works well."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The new Navigation display is not at all clear and has a washed out look to it. The older nav displays, etc. 2016 are crisp and clear."

Anonymous, KS (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Software update fixes

"The infotainment system continues to reset itself. It loses all favorites and settings. CHEVROLET Dealer installed a software update, but it still resets itself about once a month, requiring me to accept the terms and conditions over and over again."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Steering wheel controls

"I just choice one problem but I believe that all the problems that have been occurring are from the electrical side of things. As of now the problems are just a nuisance and are still under warranty so I should be able to get them fixed. My screen flashes blank, the Apple Car Play goes in and out and sometimes gets static, the OnStar system sucks. The problem isn't that bad right now but I can see it being so in the future."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Voice control commands

"Voice command is still a issue, it does not understand MOST common commands."

Anonymous, KS (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Gauges

"The outside temperature thermostat gets stuck, more noticeably at low temperatures. The truck gauge will display the same temperature for two to three days in a row, when the temperature has obviously fluctuated. Restarting the vehicle does not fix the problem. The dealer has looked at the issue twice and didn't see anything wrong with the thermometer."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Headlights

"passenger-side projector beam headlamp burned out prematurely after 1 year"

Anonymous, OR (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Warning lights

"the check engine light comes stays on more than its off. the dealership can't seem to pinpoint the problem."

Anonymous, NC (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Water collects under the passenger side door, just like in the 2015 Colorado which we traded in thinking the annoyance had been solved."

Fred F., WA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Squeaks or rattles

"Squeaking, creaking from steering column/A-pillar driver's side."

William A., CT (2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 3.6-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Oil leaks

"The upper oil pan was leaking oil that built could be seen on the ground. The oil pan was removed and the RTV sealant was replace, so far no more leaks."

Richard K., VA (2019 Chevrolet Colorado WT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"I suspect it was related to the stability, etc. problems. The dash was lighting up like a Christmas tree. And the battery eventually died. But the truck could be started with a charge."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Unsure)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Check engine light came on with less than 15,000 miles. Rainy day with no other issues associated with it. I was already due for oil change and tire rotation, plus a recall item. So we sent it in. The cleared the sensor (CEL) and said if it happens again they'll replace the sensor."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Electronic control module (ECM) faulty with water intrusion ECM and wiring harness have to be replace. Chevrolet can't get parts, can't track parts on order by dealer service. Have owned the truck since 4/30/19 and have had it a total of 3 days for use and unsafe use at that with the issue with the anti-lock brakes. Vehicle sits at dealership awaiting repair. Discussed and angry CHEVROLET has take this long to repair/replace vehicle. This is the same issue I had when I bought my 2015 Silverado. Have owned 13 GM vehicles of 19 vehicles I've owned, I will NEVER buy another GM product."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)
