While the Chevrolet Equinox is not a bad vehicle, the competition has left it in the dust. Like its twin, the GMC Terrain, the Equinox splits the difference between small SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and midsized models like the Ford Explorer. While they're nice and roomy inside, the Equinox and Terrain are less efficient than other five-passenger SUVs and burn as much gas as larger, seven-passenger models.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"very poor acceleration and low power"

Mark G., NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The vehicle is woefully underpowered and has difficulty accelerating in traffic. It is a challenge to drive on the highway because the acceleration isn't there."

Marc L., WI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very good acceleration with the V6 engine option. The AWD works well in snow/rain and provides a solid feel on dry pavement as well. However, the gas mileage could be better."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This is the 4th Equinox that I have leased. I only wish my 4 liter engine had more pickup pulling out on highway."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Stiff ride. takes bumps a little roughly, acceleration is adequate, but I would buy larger engine next time."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Totally under powered on acceleration"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is much much better than on the older model I had (2013)."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Our 6 cylinder Equinox has mediocre acceleration. It should be better (needs improvement). Another disappointment is that you cannot control the temperature of the air coming out of the heater in winter. It is either hot or not. The controls on my old 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera were better because you could control how hot the air was out of the heater. Also, the voice on the build in GPS is too soft and hard to hear."

Howard K., IL (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Would have preferred a v-6 engine but it's L/100km rating was too high"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

Ben M., OH (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"AWD works great in moderate snowy road conditions. Acceleration with the 6cyl engine is excellent and handling is commendable for this type of (high) vehicle."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"GREAT acceleration for an SUV. It was the last v-6 in the Equinoux. Handles well for a higher SUV c.g."

Kent K., MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handling is good but not outstanding. The 2.4 liter Ecotec motor needs more power to satisfy me. The 2018 has dealt with this by adding a turbo to the 2 available engines"

Ron N., ON (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The car is the standard base model L with the 2.4L engine and 6 speed automatic transmission (not a CVT which I wouldn’t have). It has amazing power and strong fast shifting transmission. I had the same engine with a 5 speed manual in a 2007 Saturn Sky that didn’t perform nearly as well as this Equinox."

Robert P., TN (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Easy steering, acceleration responds immediately, handles more smoothly than previous cars."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Pooracceleration and sloppy handling"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"These 2.4 L engines are good but noisy. Otherwise it’s quite comfortable and gets great mileage. Handles great on the highway."

Earnest S., MO (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"the engine is under powered for the car. accelerating onto a highway is difficult. the car cant get out of its own shadow so you have to be sure you have enough time and with the giant blind spots out the windows and using the small side view mirrors this is difficult. several times I've started to merge only to hear someone blasting a horn."

Joseph M., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Great handling and acceleration on highway"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"love the lumbar support and power controls used to adjust the seat"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"very impressed with the seats (all positions) they are on-par with much more expensive vehicles in terms of comfort and ride smoothness.."

Richard Y., MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seat is too narrow and causes pain in my right hip,"

Robert D., CO (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Equinox is it comfortable long-distance traveler. It rides and handles well. It gets good gas mileage on the road. It has controls making it easy to determine my level of economy while driving."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I am a rather large guy and the seats are comfortable. The memory seat option is also a great plus."

Anonymous, NE (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Drivers seat us comfortable but very difficult to get out. Side is too high."

R B., MA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats have enough adjustments that a comfortable position can always be found. I do not like the limited adjustment of the steering column, there is only up or down where as my other vehicles and more in between positions. I do not use the telescoping feature."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I have a leg/foot disability, so the easy access is most appreciated as are the very comfortable seats and easy ride."

Andrew M., MA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats are comfortable but the ride is not very good. The acceleration has a lot to be desired."

Gerald S., NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats, both front and 2nd row, are very comfortable. It is one of the main reasons we bought this Equinox. The AC system coming from the front vents is poor and disappointing. We need to really crank the fan, with strong blowing, to generate enough cooling. Also, the 2nd row does not receive enough cooling."

David B., FL (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Cloth interior is very comfortable and having a rear bench seat that adjusts forward/backwards depending on the size of the rear passengers is great. The storage is great, the ride is very controlled for uneven and twisting roads and the wind noise is very low so we can converse without having to shout."

Lynn B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats are very comfortable both front and back. Very happy with the ability to slide the rear seat easily for more leg room or more cargo room"

Geraldine G., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats comfortable for me. Ride not as smooth."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"ease of entry and seats are very comfortable. Engine noise is high on quick acceleration. The ride is closer to a truck than a well developed car ."

- S., AZ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Memory drivers seat comfortably but seat does not always return from the exit position unless you use the memory position button."

Patrick N., MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Road noise is a little higher than it should be."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats are comfortable and supportive. Minimal road noise."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Everything is great, except the noisy 4 cylinder when accelerating. This is our second Equinox with a 4, so we’re pretty used to it. Otherwise performance is fine."

Earnest S., MO (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats are comfortable and the front seats are controlled with switches and not manual. Seats go to many positions. Find that the road noise is a little higher than my previous vehicles but the radio can adjust to cancel a lot of it out. The SUV does handle well when driving and no play in the steering. Do feel that the turn ratio is a little more than I thought it would be."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"We sat in about 20 other SUVs at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show. The 2017 Equinox and GMC Terrain had the most comfortable driver power seat and the most driver room compared with the other SUVs in their class! Much more comfortable that the others! Others are only good for smaller people."

Howard K., IL (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"We just purchased this car. We obtained a very good end of model year discount. The front seats are very large and comfortable and the cabin appears spacious. We like the smoothness of its ride and drive. We also like the roominess of the back seat. The LS has more than enough features for our driving."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Took advantage of a GM pull ahead offer, and the rebates and discounts were extraordinary at the time. Paying less per month for a lease (nothing down) then was paid for a 2009 Equinox."

Joseph L., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I have a lot of features that I did not have before. The sticker was about the same and I received $4250 in incentives."

George M., MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The price can't be beat for what you get. The rear seat has enormous leg room and can slide forward to add carry space in the rear deck. The vehicle feels larger than it is."

- S., AZ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Often heavily discounted, the Equinox combines versatility, dependability, reliability, excellent drive ability, and reasonable comfort with excellent fuel efficiency [25-32mpg]."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Great, dependable vehicle that fills all my needs."

Mary C., DE (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"short term lease (2 years) with very affordable monthly payment very easy entry and exit for spouse's physical therapy"

John P., MD (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"an exceptional car in all aspects!"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I wanted a vehicle with good cargo carrying that I could flat tow behind our motorhome that was still light weight enough to be towed easily."

Robert P., TN (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I feel Chevy should have safety features as standard rather than optional"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The dealer encouraged me to trade for a newer Equinox by making the financial obligation very reasonable."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The lease rate on the big engine Equinox is $200 less per month than the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 with base engine."

Richard Y., MI (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"got more for my money than a RAV 4 ( my second choice) because I could not get options I wanted without also getting a sunroof ( did not want) on the RAV4"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Excellent price"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Good value for cost"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Good value!"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"As a GM credit card owner and a GM car owner plus my negotiation with a dealership, I got a pretty good deal."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"A year end model lease deal that was way less than the last Equinox leased in the early 2000,s."

Joseph L., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Great lease pricing"
