Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Braking distances on wet pavement were also improved. The diesel engine in the heavy-duty Silverado 2500 LTZ (which we also tested) proved to be relatively civilized. A hybrid version was available too. On the other hand, IIHS side-crash test results were disappointing.

"Door locks and electric windows did not work. Windows on the right hand side of vehicle still will not close if opened. Had the Body Control Module changed out. No improvement. Dealership clueless and cannot help, others tell me they cannot do this and must go to dealership. Catch 22.Lights started blinking, motor shut down"

Geir B., TX (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Cruise control

"Started intermittently at first, possibly due to weather(?), then would not work at all. Mileage was less than 100k so was not happy about it. Went on-line to diagnose the problem and discovered it is a sensor associated with the brakes. I replaced the sensor and it has worked fine ever since."

Anonymous, CO (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"I lost the cruise control in the summer of 2012. It was repaired by the dealership. During a long drive from Texas to Maine two weeks ago I lost the cruise control again. It started with working some of the time, and then shut completely down. It has not yet been repaired. What gets to me is that I can never trust a system to work. Open a window; perhaps it won't go up again or only after several tries and some time. Turn cruise control off in traffic; back on the open road and it won't start again. And now never. Speakers dying out, the pling sound for key in and door open being faint and almost no longer there."

Geir B., TX (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Brake indicator system failed causing cruise to not function."

Anonymous, ME (2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)

Radio

"Sound quality sharply dimished - low frequencies disappeared and remaining sound was quite distorted. At first, about 2 years ago, it was only during cold weather, and disappeared as soon as soon as the interior of the truck warmed up. As time passed, the periods of good sound took longer to appear, and might revert to the bad sound at any time, warm or cold. Toward the end of 2019, the good sound almost completely disappeared. Occasionally, I try to listen to it, but only when parked or driving slowly, more quietly. Then, I can sometimes make out what the news is, and I need to increase the volume setting - but that's all. No music - too much of the frequency range is gone or terribly distorted. While trying to listen, it sometimes, and suddenly, comes on full sound spectrum, startling and loud, since the volume had been turned up. Somewhere in the circuitry there seems to be a heat-sensitive (expansion/contraction) problem, opening and closing some connection (my theory). I haven't replaced it since it's no longer covered by warranty, and the replacement cost is estimated to be over $500.00."

Steering wheel controls

"The cruise control began working only intermittently around Winter of 2018-2019, and stopped working almost completely in Summer of 2019. Occasionally, I would try it, and sometimes, though seldom, it worked. It may be for a while - throughout a trip, both long or short, but usually it stopped working without anything giving a clue that it was going to quit - the truck speed just started slowing, and a check of the cruise control verified that it had stopped working. Later in 2019, when the weather was cold and wet, the dashboard warning lights for brakes and traction control came on and stayed on. Stopping, and turning off the ignition, then restarting would turn off the warning lights. But, they might come on, again, without any noticeable cause. When I took it to the local Chev. dealer (Lynn Smith), they said it was a master control switch, and replaced it. That fixed the warning light problem, and, a 'bonus' - the cruise control began working correctly. Both are still working."

"Electric windows all partly shut down. Doors are filled with water after rain. I have changed the window lift system on the rear passenger door, but will need to do so on all doors. I complained about this issue as early as 09 or 10 while under warranty. The windows go down, not up again. As I also have had to switch out all speakers in the doors, cruise control has stopped working for the second time since new, I feel very dissatisfied with the quality of both the weather stripping (it looks like new and is not hardened) and the electric system.
