Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"EGR cooler failed at 60000 miles, EGR cooler, EGR and EGR sensor, wiring harness were replaced to correct. Also the def tank heater failed at 59000 miles, tank and heater were replaced. GM extended the warranty coverage at dealerships request and paid $ 5900.00 for repairs."

Stephen S., FL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system failed. OBD indicated a heater failure in the DEF tank. A dealer replaced the entire tank reservoir with the associated equipment inside the tank."

M R., CA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Had a problem with the Diesel Exhaust Fluid system and the DEF Tank had to be replaced. The replacement cost was covered by the warranty."

Joseph H., OK (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"The heater in the DEF tank became inoperable. This caused the vehicle to go into a limp mode. It was back ordered at Chevrolet. which kept me from using the vehicle for a couple of weeks.. It was replaced under warranty."

Richard L., CA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"diesel exhaust fluid tank and dispenser"

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Check engine light came on, took to it to the dealership, required replacement of the diesel emission fluid heater located in the fuel tank. Part replacement and labor was covered under emission warranty."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"DEF tank sensor"

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"DEF senor went bad, keeps reduceing power in truck till you get it fixed. Basically makes it unsafe to drive. It caused a meltdown in cat. dealer had to replace def pump, sensor, cat. Common problem. dealer said to use their def, quality of other brands isn't as good. This isn't specified in manual, and it isn't true. I guess that is why a lot of people do a def delete after warranty is up at 100,000 miles"

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Unsure 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"The heating unit in the DEF tank stopped working. This gave a fault and put some restrictions on the vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"DEF fluid heater"

Anonymous, AR (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Truck was stuck in low power mode (diesel engine) when the catalytic converter failed to regenerate. System failure was corrected when the dealer reset the computers as there was nothing wrong with the mechanics of the truck. This type of failure is not a minor inconvenience as the vehicle is useless and dangerous to drive when in low power mode. Failure happened 2,000 km after the 60K warranty expired and is not covered by the 100,000 km power train warranty"

Ted G., AB (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"DEF tank had to be replaced due to faulty heating element. Under warranty"

Mitchell D., LA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Diesel Exhaust Fluid Sensor failed"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LT 6.6-L V8 diesel)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"The truck is a diesel and the sensor failure has to do with the DEF system. Sensor number two failed and a restriction was put on the vehicle just as I was about to drive it south for the winter. I had to have the repair done right away so I went to a mechanic that wasn't covered by the warranty so I had to pay for the repair myself."

Anonymous, ID (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD LTZ 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"Check engine light came on and stayed on for three days until I took it to the dealership. The truck continued to run with no noticeable difference. I was told that the only thing it would do is lessen my mpg."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Unsure 6.0-L V8)

"Its all related to the same issue."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Unsure 6.6-L V8 diesel)

Shell B., CO (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 6.6-L V8 diesel)

"In accurate maps, difficult interface, some necessary features locked out while driving while more difficult to use and less useful features remain available. Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"This is an ongoing problem for several years, that has been fixed and then the part replaced would fail again. The dealership has been very helpful, but Chevrolet has not. I have been worried about mold, and really all I want is to get out of this vehicle. Chevrolet wants to help in the sense by fixing the problem. But this just keeps happening. I have requested them to buy back the vehicle and the most that they would do is give me a small credit on the purchase of a new vehicle which has to be used within 12 months."

"The ABS and the stabiliTrak warning lights would come on, usually after running over a chuck hole. Pulled over, turned off the engine and let it sit, to see if it would clear. This happened four times on our drive to Las Vegas. Each time the warning lights went off while driving. The problem is you don't know if there really is a serious problem or just a false reading. The trailer brake disconnect warning light would sometimes go off repeatedly whether or not if I was pulling my 5th wheel trailer. The dealer could not find a problem."
