The huge Suburban might not be politically correct, but it has been the vehicle of choice for large families, or those who need heavy-duty towing and off-road capabilities for quite some time. Suburban seats up to nine (though more commonly seven or eight) with plenty of room for luggage. It has a comfortable ride, a quiet interior and a well-mannered V8 engine. However, handling is ungainly and fuel economy is poor.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Wish that I got the 6.2L engine for this SUV."

DALE B., TX (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Slow acceleration unless you floor the pedal. Mostly due to heavy weight of the vehicle. A higher gear ratio rear end would help greatly, along with a 10-speed transmission. Magnetic ride suspension is very smooth and handling is great for such a large vehicle."

MARK M., NC (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"I hate the transmission in this car! It doesn't make a smooth transition when changing to higher gears and labors going up hills"

Anonymous, MD (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Acceleration and throttle response is horrible. Significant delay from pressing pedal to down shift to acceleration. To point of being a safety concern when merging."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"We bought this car to tow a heavy rv. It makes no sense to have it otherwise. It's lumbering but feels safe on the highway. Terrible city car, too long and tall. Hard to steer with heavy duty tow package. I find it exhausting to drive around town for errands. It's only used to commute on highway. Perfect for that situation."

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Auto drivers seat fails to adjust about half the time"

TODD R., NV (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Dual climate controls keep failing on drivers side. Air conditioner will blow hot air on drivers side, while blowing very cold on passenger side."

Anonymous, LA (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Fantastic seats , very comfortable .."

SAM H., CT (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"I had to recover top of dash board because the plastic cracked"

R S., MO (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Love the heated seats! Love the controls for seat adjustment! It has plenty of room for passengers and hauling stuff."

JULIE J., NE (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"Dual climate control adjustment controls do not work properly. Have chagechanged this twice already and needs to be change again. Driver side control runs hot year round. Have to roll switch up and down several times to get it in cool mode."

Roy C., LA (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I looked into both the Lexus LX470 2009 and the Suburban LTZ 2009. Ride, styling, interior space and luxuries were equal, the price on the suburban won me over - and I was a Lexus driver for years."

CYNTHIA K., WI (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)

"We paid too much for the vehicle; but were in an emergency situation as transmission went out on the Suburban we had when we were on the way to our lake home with 5 dogs with us. Had to buy another vehicle immediately. Is a good car but the price definitely too high and didn't have the perks that the one we traded in. We had over 250,000 miles on the traded-in vehicle."

MARIE W., MO (2009 Chevrolet Suburban)
