The Suburban is a huge, old-fashioned, truck-based SUV, the quintessential family truckster for large families who live beyond the suburbs. What sets it apart from other SUVs is that it provides three rows of seats -- for carrying up to seven, eight, or even nine people -- yet still retains generous cargo space, along with a hefty towing capacity. Add a luxurious and quiet interior and the added traction of four-wheel drive and you get a uniquely capable vehicle.

Based on the frame of the full-sized Chevrolet Silverado pickup, the Suburban -- and its GMC Yukon XL twin -- is one of the last few SUVs with real truck capabilities in a world where nearly every other SUV has adopted carlike unit-body structures. Despite the Suburban's major updates for 2015, it still delivers a relatively truck-like driving experience and fuel economy compared to better handling car-based SUVs. Then again, none of those "crossovers" can match the Suburban's combination of talents.

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The compressor was making a small roaring noise and had to be replaced"

Donald C., SC (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"It was making a roaring noise"

Donald C., SC (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"They are still diagnosing because this happened the day before the COVID 19 business suspensions."

Anonymous, KY (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"At 59000 miles the AC compressor went out. It is a common problem and was fixed by factory for free."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"AC stopped blowing cold air in September 2019. Found a broken tube per mechanic. I have not completed the repairs so don't know the full details."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Condenser

"Known problem that the condenser will fail. GM extended the warranty because condenser will fail because of a poor weld and thermal cycling. Cost to fix by GM is $1300. I am doing it myself for $400 but frustrated that the warranty is only 60k miles when the part will fail eventually."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"covered by chevy even out of warranty"

Anonymous, NH (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Evaporator

"chevy knew the issue existed and put a warranty to 60,000 on the part ours went out in the winter between 58,000 and 60,200 miles we only noticed it once this summer started which we were at 60,200 miles . at that point was out of warranty would not help. will not by another vehicle from them"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Refrigerant leaks

"There was a crack in something (forget what it is called) that caused the leaking that was still under the extended warranty so they replaced it, would have been a $1200 repair."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera image is washed out at night. It basically does not work at night. Also the camera location means it collect a lot of dirt/dust and bubbles of water making it again worthless"

Michael C., VA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"would be driving and the center console would go blank. The nav. screen to the dvd player. the ac and fan would still be working"

Joel D., CO (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"I searched on line and found other people had the same problem, especially when they plugged in a music device to the USB so I don't do that and I haven't had that problem again"

Lisa J., WA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Antenna failure which caused lose of link to GPS satellites"

Michael D., FL (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Requires repeated entries for system to recognize voice commands - if at all. Data base is often incorrect for POIs. Multiple confirmations are required - very distracting. Final confirmation requires removing eyes from road to make an on-screen entry. NO COMPARISON to Android/Google Car Play or Apple Auto, both of which are far superior"

George O., CT (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"no GPS signal"

Anonymous, NH (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Rear entertainment system (e.g., DVD player, rear screen)

"Bought new. In dealership for repair 4 times. Replaced catalytic converter & exhaust system. Noise still persists"

Laurie M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Random noise in the dash board. Sounds like windshield was cracking. First fixed with "pins" that didn't work. Second fixed with a metal plate which fixed that problem, but now the lower half of the dash rattles like a 10 year old car. Others online had a similar issue"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"The vehicle started making a bad "knock" in the driveline while driving. While maintaining steady speed and pressure on the gas pedal, the RPMs would vary by 200-400 for no apparent reason. The torque converter had failed, sending parts into the transmission that required the transmission to be rebuilt. It was a very expensive repair on a vehicle that was out of warranty due to mileage, but not years. The vehicle had never towed anything, had been meticulously maintained and there was no external reason for this part to fail. There is no question that the part was defective."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The problem started on a FRI and by MON was not able to drive the vehicle. The vehicle only 70K miles"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LS 5.3-L V8)

"few months prior to having the transmission replaced, sluggish acceleraton, engine noise"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"This was caused by the failed torque converter. See previous response."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Vacuum pump failed rendering braking useless. CHEVROLET doesn’t have a recall on the issue, yet. But they did reimburse me for the cost."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"Caliper on one side was sticking and not releasing brake pad. appeared to be due to rust, but dealer unsure so they replaced front brakes, calipers, and rotors under warrenty"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Regular brake failure

"GM issued a recall to update/reprogram brake boost assist. Problem is regular loss of power assist at low speed. I experienced total loss of power brake boost assist. The brakes would only work if the pedal was pressed with enormous force. I experienced this brake boost failure in heavy bumper to bumper traffic. It was totally unexpected. The brake pedal felt like a brick and had to be pushed very hard to slow or stop the car. I was extremely concerned for my personal and family's safety. The dealership dismissed it as no big deal because I still had braking action, but without power assist. The dealership felt the unassisted braking was sufficient. They eventually replaced the engine vacuum pump to improve vacuum boost to the master cylinder. They had difficulty getting the new vacuum pump part because of a nationwide shortage (imagine that!). In summary, I feel the initial software update made the braking performance worse to the point of vacuum pump failure. The pump failure and unexpected loss of power assist brake performance jeopardized my family's safety. Braking performance has been restored after the vacuum pump was replaced. I will never buy another new or used GM product with this vacuum pump assist feature. It just isn't dependable."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"A poorly designed vacuum pump required a $1200 fix. If you pressed the brakes 3 times under 5 MPH you will lose Your brakes. Worse feeling ever. I fixed for $217 in parts and GM will not reimburse me because I did not pay the full $1200 for a dealer. Very frustrating."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

"The panels next to both 2nd row passenger windows are loose and won’t stay put. They don’t come off, but hang in the wind as you drive."

Anonymous, ND (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"Black molding between the doors fall off."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Side trim between the outside windows falls off! On both sides of the car. Unbelievable."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Like every Suburban I have owned, 4 plus this one, the battery stops without warning causing complete shutdown and chaos in the electrical system. It is a major deal additionally to get it towed with no power. Love the Sub but the battery system is awful."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
