Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, IA (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"CD player overheats and just stops playing. It feels alarmingly warm to the touch if you play it for too long. Doesn't seem to "shut off" when you turn off the car. I have come back after a shopping trip of several hours and the thing is still war"

Anonymous, WI (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)

"CD player became stuck playing a CD on random tracks and continued playing when the car was turned off, even after I had locked and walked away from the car with the key. I had to pull the fuse for the entertainment system and re-install the fuse for the system to stop playing."

Adam C., IL (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
Display screen difficult to see

"the print is too small when using thet GPS function. Once the screen just froze"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL Plug-in Hybrid)

"All new vehicles do not take into consideration that a big share of the owners are over 70 and can hardly see the gauges or understand the unneeded electronics that complicate our driving experience"

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE Hybrid)
Display screen freezes up

"The interaction screen freezes up every year. When this happens the radio cant be turned off even if the car is turned off. At first I took it to the dealer and paid hundreds for them to return it and say they reset the software. but latter the next 12 months or so it keeps happening. When this problem happens my wife cant use the Bluetooth feature and hands free driving is then impossible causing in my opinion an unsafe environment. Especially because, it fails unexpectedly when it has not been identified making the confusion happen while operating the vehicle. Very frustrating that Ford has not been able to find a fix for this problem and that the dealerships are happy to take your money when all you can do to stop the freeze is pull the fuse and put it back in that resets everything. Its still ongoing. If the car was not so nice otherwise we would have parked it at the dealership after we bought it but the freeze issue did not seem such a permanent problem until years afterwards. I never buy another ford again but its a good car otherwise"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"This is the same issue as the radio issue that I discussed, it's hard to know where one system ends and another begins so I checked the box for both symptoms I saw."

Anonymous, (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"You wouldn't think that the infotainment system could prevent the car from starting. But the car thought that it was always plugged in, so it would not let you start it. When we brought the car to the dealer, they said the infotainment system was the cause. The infotainment system been a recurring problem, but right now things are working. The dealer ordered a part, and I know it will be expensive, and since we are all staying home now, I haven't had it repaired yet."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Music once paired with a phone wont show song titles and will randomly get stuck."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Sometimes the screen display freezes saying it's doing a Sirius update. The radio won't play during that time, and there's no update actually happening. It's just stuck doing nothing. The solution is to unplug the fuse beneath the glove box, and then replace it. If this isn't done right away the battery will completely drain itself and the car won't start later. In other words, you can't turn off the car and go into work or into the house unless you want to be greeted by a dead battery when you need the car again. This is a serious flaw that the technicians at the Ford dealership (where I go for maintenance) hadn't heard of when I explained it to them. They told me to bring it in next time it happened, but none of them work there any more. Luckily it only happens about once a year and I figured out how to fix it myself. But it shouldn't happen at all. Otherwise, I love my C-Max."

Anonymous, IN (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"There nwas a loose connector behind the dash which caused the drivers display (ofometer, engine state, etc) to freeze"

Dale R., IL (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)

"It was an electronic issue that cause the battery to run down and computer need to be reprogramed a few times before the problem was fixed"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE Hybrid)

"Try to change radio station - display shows old station; sometimes clock just stops - remains displayed with incorrect time"

Stan J., NY (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE Hybrid)

"The whole systems goes down. Sometimes this occurs while driving. It has happened 3x, each time into the shop for several days for repairs. I purchased the extended warranty for the first time ever because I was concerned about early reports of pro"

Ronald D., MD (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"There are times the touch screen freezes up, not responding to my touch. It's frustrating. I believe it's related to the electrical battery because I do not notice it happening while using the hybrid battery. The interplay between the two batteries seems to have caused several problems in the electrical control systems."

"After driving about one mile using the navigation guidance the display screen went blank. Stopped at a dealer to have it checked and upon restarting the vehicle it worked just fine. Separately after using the nav on a 4 hour trip, the radio turned itself on and we could not turn it off so we lowered the volume. About 2 minutes later the nav system turned itself off and we could not get it to work again. After turning the car off and then restarting it the nav & radio work just fine again"

Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone will pair but drops a few seconds after."

Anonymous, (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The old Ford Software does not do well with current streaming options such as Pandora or Tidal. We also have an issue where the phone is often "not recognized." Sometimes it seems as though USB cables go bad, but the Bluetooth option is poor and is very limited. Sometimes it can take restarting the car (at a stoplight) complete with opening the door to get the radio and/or gps to work. Ford doesn't appear to make updating easy nor does it seem to be keeping pace for this relatively old software with the new popular applications. Sometimes I have to go without the radio entirely, which is strange. And phonecall interruptions further complicate it. This also can lead to the song display not matching or updating."

Radio

"This is my best guess at diagnosing an intermittent issue where the radio freezes and has caused my battery to drain overnight rendering the car inoperable. Things I know 1) the battery has drained completely over a single night, 3 or 4 times. This continued to happen even after replacing the 12v battery about a year ago. 2) the radio sometimes freezes in various states, such as on and playing music, even after the car is shut off and I get out and walk away and lock it. Other times it freezes in a state that is not playing music or other audio. After researching online, it seems that issue 2 is the most likely cause of issue 1. The official fix of replacing the radio module is estimated in the $800 range, so instead we keep a pair of pliers in the car to pull the fuse any time the radio freezes and I have a battery charger that I hook up when it dies overnight. It's just an occasional intermittent issue, and doesn't seem worth spending that much money on when I will probably be buying an electric car in a couple years"

Anonymous, (2013 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Radio keep playing, even after car was turned off and I had gotten out of the car. Was concerned that it would run down the battery. Service center fixed problem temporarily and advised that I go to dealer for a software update."

"The entire stereo system quit: first the SYNC, then the Bluetooth, then the CD & flashdrive, then the radio itself. All that's left that works via the LED screen is the time/clock and the external thermometer reading."

"The radio died within 5years just outside warranty period. I had taken it in a few times for crackling noise and was informed that it was running hot. There is yet to be a recall and the dealership was charging >500 to fix. Based on internet search when I experienced issues, I know I am not alone. Since it is not an operational hazard (except when I am distracted using a 3rd party radio) I suspect it may never be recalled."

"As could be seen via an online search, this was a common problem across many 2013, 2014, and 2015 (not sure about the later) models. Occasionally the radio would freeze at whatever station/volume you had it on last when starting up the car, and you could not change the station, volume, or turn off the radio no matter what buttons were pressed. Either it drained the car battery and a jump-start would reset the system, or it was solved by removing the F79 radio fuse and plugging it back it to reset it. It has happened 3 times over the 4 years I've had the car."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

Jennifer H., CA (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The CVT transmission was making a continuous grinding noise. The dealer where we purchased the wanted to install a new transmission costing $8700, including parts, labor and tax. Aamco is currently rebuilding the transmission for $3054. Ford would not provide any relief, despite the obvious premature failure of the transmission. This is unfortunate because the is basically a very good car (engine, handling, brakes, ride). After many foreign cars, this was my first American car. Our other car, a VW Golf is a wonderful car."

"Car was in for a minor recall. I mentioned a clicking noise. The Ford dealer investigated and said it needed a new transmission. It took a while to get one but I had a free loaner for the entire period. Although I have an extended warranty that I purchased the entire replacement cost was covered by Ford. I think there had been some type of notification to dealers about an issue with early builds of the C-Max. I don't think I would have thought the clicking was serious enough for me to have brought the vehicle in for the problem. Car ran fine both before and after the transmission replacement."

"Transmission became very loud and was replaced under warranty."

M L., MA (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"i had a traffic accident on 1.29.18 and the ford collision center in Chico, CA estimate was below the cutoff for totaling it. however after adjustments the total went to 10K in collision work, over the threshold for authorizing work on it for insurance purposes. after the work was completed the body shop notified the insurance company and me that I needed a totally rebuilt transmission to the tune of 7968.00. They collectively informed me that it was not caused by the accident. however I was not having any problems with it prior to the accident and I always had Ford perform all maintenance including oil changes with their Ford Works package. Never was i informed of any issues; pending or otherwise. So I now have a car that was structurally repaired at 10k but in need of a new transmission which they are insisting that I am responsible for. very sad and disappointing ... I have called into Ford Consumer Hotline twice to no avail. What do you recommend? Thanks David Bai"

This has not been yet repaired. We discovered by Googling that this car model had a TSB No. 14B07 that we hope Ford will honor. This TSB indicates that a drive shaft bearing is known to cause this problem and can be repaired."

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Rear tires set out at an angle (no camber adjustment to bring back in line on rear) and wear inside of rear tires. Have had aligned at dealer they say is in specs and just that way"

Anonymous, KS (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"The steering mechanism is driven by an electric motor rather than power steering fluid so it has no pump or hoses. The dealership said there were scuff marks on the tires indicating the car had been curbed a few times which it had not been curbed/run into curbs at least while I have owned it. The car was originally a factory demo used by any number of Ford employees at conventions in California and elsewhere so how many curbs did they run into? They replaced the part which was $2500 and I only paid $100 deductible because they said I was such a good customer. My VW vanagon Westfalia by the way is a 1982 that I purchased used in 1995. You don't want to know all the stuff I've had to have done to that car over the years, it would break your heart. By the way, the mileage should be in miles not kilometers as should the gas mileage. The CMax had 75K miles on it and the gas mileage averages about 39mpg. I have no idea what that translates to in kilometers."

Keith H., (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Shocks or struts

"The rear strut upper mount had rusted and broke when I hit a large bump. Our roads are crap, you know, full of potholes and bumps, and they salt the crap out of them during the winter, so rust is a problem in my region. I limped the car to my local private garage and they replaced all 4 struts. Not as big a deal as the front bearings going out two years ago. I love this car, but the suspension could be more robust, as I have had to have expensive repairs for the last three years in a row (front bearings, rear stabilizer mounts, all 4 struts, tie rod ends), though if someone with this car lived where they didn't salt the roads and the roads were mostly smooth, I'm sure the suspension system would last much longer. Other than what I mentioned, I love the car, especially for it's comfortable seating position and ergonomics (I'm 6' 3" tall) and I love the mileage, even though it wasn't as high as initially advertised."

Tie rods

"I began to experience a clunking sound at around 50K miles when going over bumps. We have a lot of potholes and basically crappy roads where I live. I asked my private garage at each inspection to check everything suspension and brake related out and told them about the clunking noise. This last time, they said they discovered the tie rod ends were worn, so I had them replaced. Now the suspension is nice and quiet-I wish I had the tie rod ends replaced about 40K miles ago."

Anonymous, (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"There is a plastic pan or cover beneath the car's engine. This cover has come loose a few times when I'm driving. It drags on the ground and I have to stop and shove it back in place so I can get to where I'm going. The problem seems to occur most often after driving through puddles or flooded streets. I recently had to replace this piece of trim completely because it could no longer be fastened in place. MyFord dealer indicated that this is not uncommon on the C-Max."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The body is made of what seems to be cheap plastic. Scrapes on doors are not fixable, the entire front bumper assembly falls off and must be reset, the rear hatch has a poorly designed latch that I had to completely replace."
