Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Ford C-MAX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"The charging system was not able to be updated/changed. i.e. normally I can set the charging start time and or the type on charging cycle (delayed or charge now) but it would not allow me to change any thing related to the charging system. This has happened several time and the fix has been to have the dealer reset the computer causing all my preferences to be lost including navigation locations and radio chanel presets."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The SYNC system went haywire, freezing up, going blank, and moving the icons around. THe dealer attempted to fix it twice but it went askew again after restarting the car. THey kept my car for 2 weeks while corporate got involved and multiple techs reviewed the problem. Someone finally found where a wire was loose which let it get close to something that heated it up, I think. Either way, it has worked fine since repair."

White D., NY (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Display screen goes blank

"it started the same year i bought the car. about 2-3 times a year the screen black out for about half an hour before it comes back on. usually when using gps, making it hard to use. it will eventually come back on and be vary slow when i try to use it."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"the underlying electronics had to be replaced"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"bluetooth was dropping phone intermittently. Would not happen for days then happen every few minutes for days"

Richard A., CT (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL Plug-in Hybrid)

"On a recent trip, a friend's Apple phone seemed to hijack the music and phone functions over the two previously paired Windows phones in the car. Very irritating"

Anonymous, CO (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Inaccurate and at times cannot tell what street i am driving on"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL Plug-in Hybrid)

"Voice commands for route guidance are not reliable - actually < 50% of the time. It's extremely aggravating! The voice command hierarchy is maddening plus the non-recognition of responses makes me want to smash it. Siri in iPhone s/b the model"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL Plug-in Hybrid)

"When the main battery is exhausted and the car is restarted the GPS system will not work until the reserve battery is fully recharged"

Anonymous, DE (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE Plug-in Hybrid)

"After buying the upgrade chip, the navigation has been very inaccurate over long trips."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"The navigation system is outdated and Ford says I need a new updated version of the card (at a price of $159_"

Jack H., (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"System doesn't accurately depict route of travel. It positions car on screen off the actual road of travel"

S C., GA (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When I drove the vehicle from the service center (I had to have body work done after vandalism) the navigation system was inoperable. The service center indicated that the control system located in the box between the front seats had to be replaced. We had not experienced the problem before the servicing. This cost $450. The navigation now works the same as it did when we purchased the car. As you well know the original Ford Sync system works poorly and we rarely use it."

Anonymous, SC (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The navigation system has taken me to incorrect destinations and the voice response system often does not display the desired address."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The GPS can't always find me in a timely manner but they said that wasn't related to the SYNC issue. It works well enough most of the time. I paid for the system but I refuse to pay $150 for an update when the car is not old. It's also annoying that you have to pick the town, village or whatever and it says not found if your address isn't in the village but it's in the town. Start over. The voice command is lengthy and annoying also. One command at a time: Navigation - Destination - Street address .... then tell the address that it hopefully gets otherwise try again. It's the weak link in a wonderful car."

White D., NY (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth pairing is not reliable"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)

"I have to pair them frequently."

Jack H., (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"See other comment"

B D., CO (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid )

"Pairing would quit but didn't know why. Ford dealer said I needed a computer upgrade of the Sync/MyTouch to latest software."

Janet V., WI (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Radio

"Periodically, radio stops working. Only way to getting working is to pull over turn off the car and restart"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)

"The FM radio does not really work, currently. It has not changed channels in the past, but now it just doesn't work. I use Sirius XM, so the FM radio problem is not serious to me. Probably a restart of the computer that controls it might fix it, but that is a hassle."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Terrible reception"

Anonymous, (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Display didn't reflect current play selection. Touch screen often unresponsive."

Anonymous, MN (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Steering wheel controls

"Left menu contoller responding intermittently"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Voice control commands

"It is nearly impossible to use the voice command feature...seems at times that I'd be safer to text while driving than to change a radio channel using voice commands"

Timothy W., FL (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL Plug-in Hybrid)

"After 60000 miles the voice command would misunderstand phone names which it heretofore had done flawlessly. Unit would not accept call to my Bluetooth phone (had to answer it manually after which voice came over speakers)"

Charles W., TN (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"When the navigation system failed, the voice controls also did not work. As you know the Ford Sync system is not user friendly and we never use it."

Anonymous, SC (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"It is not a good navigation system and far inferior to that of a 2010 Toyota Prius we used to own."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"socket for turn signal was bed"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

Joseph O., FL (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Headlights

"Same issue as fog lights. Too difficult to replace"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Headlight lenses were not properly sealed and allowed moisture and condensation inside. Visible water spotting occurred. Dealership had to submit pictures twice and speak with a Ford engineer to get approval to replace the headlight assemblies before my warranty expires. It took 1 week of back and forth between Ford and my service advisor. Replacements have been updated with "vented covers" to allow for moisture evaporation"

"recall on doors"

Anonymous, GA (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid )

"Both rear door panels dislodged causing the doors to become stuck in the closed position. The plastic pegs that hold the door panels on came off twice on the driver's side and once on the passenger side, requiring the door panels themselves to be replaced."

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Ford C-MAX Energi SEL 2.0-L 4 Cyl plug-in hybrid)

"Continuous problems too numerous to mention"

Dennis S., MI (2014 Ford C-MAX Hybrid SEL Hybrid)
