Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Ford Fiesta owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Clutch adjustment

"Powershift automatic trans has been reprogrammed twice due to shudder on acceleration and odd "clicking" noises that sound like rocks in a can being shaken"

Stephen O., OH (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"same"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"It was repaired by the Ford dealer"

Paul L., MO (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Hydraulics (clutch master or slave cylinder)

"Master transmission cylinder broke suddenly at an intersection during rush hour. With less than 50000 miles on the vehicle this is extremely disappointing. Needed a tow to the shop. At least it was repaired quickly, but with low mileage and good vehicle care throughout its life it feels like this shouldn't have happened."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Ford Fiesta ST 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My Fiesta had a noisy throw out bearing, replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, MN (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.0-L 3 Cyl turbo)
Rough shifting

"it wont stay in gear!"

Sharon W., CA (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"automatic transmission just didn't shift properly, or caused a vibration at low rpm"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Stuttering was repaired when clutch was replaced"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The transmission shutters when you press the accelerator from a stopped position."

Stephen C., NY (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This shuddering was all part of the clutch/transmission problems Ford experienced with this transmission"

Gary E., TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"When moving from a stop, the transmission would make strange noises and sometimes balk. This also happens when turning a corner and accelerating."

Ken V., CO (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Rough shifting at low speeds, especially at turning from a full stop. Told it was my driving, until I pointed out at the current lawsuits in US and Canada about the dual clutch transmissions for 2011 to 2015 Ford Models. Second time I took car in there was no comment from dealership other then they had changed the transmission oil and calibrated the trans properly."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.0-L 3 Cyl turbo)

"Very rough shifting at startup. Many trips to ford for softwaer changes, parts replacement, adjustments, etc. Still a problem"

J M., NY (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Constantly shifting rough, step on the gas and car won't move then lunges forward"

Kevin D., AL (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This has the worst shifting in a car I have ever had. In order to get a smooth shift I put selector in S and let the computer shift thru 1-3 then can move the selector to D to handle the overdrive gears"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission often does not shift smoothly when you go forward from dead stop. Colder weather, more often."

John H., PA (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"My car shifted roughly from the time I purchased it new. It is a well documented issue with Ford Fiestas."

Tim M., CO (2014 Ford Fiesta S 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"6 speed automatic failed system 4 times in 2 years."

Ronald G., OH (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Slipping transmission was replaced twice at 19,000 and 29,000 miles. Seems ok now"

Brian B., MN (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The Ford Fiesta for 2014 has a terrible 7 speed transmission. There is litigation to make Ford compensate buyers but it is taking years to settle in Canada. Most of the rest of the world has already made them settle."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Even after clutch replacement, the transmission performs poorly. It slips and often lags dangerously when downshifting for sudden acceleration is required."

Albert P., OH (2014 Ford Fiesta 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Covered by Ford"

W O., FL (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"When placing the fiesta in reverse, the stick will often move out of gear unless you hold it there with your hand. We have taken the car to the dealership several times to no avail"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"some intermittent shudder when accellerating"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission system was not recalled, but became part of a class action lawsuit. The suit is settled, but does not pay for updates to system that could fix the issue."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Totally failed while on vacation. Luckily a fellow at the cottage rental place knew how to disconnect the transmission linkage so we coud push the car to where a tow truck could pick it up."

Anonymous, (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"It needed a "reset""

Anonymous, (2014 Ford Fiesta SE Unsure)

"Would often hesitate during shifting..."

Anonymous, WY (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"first two times dealer stated it was normal for a transmission to do this. 3rd time problem (shuddering or slipping) was fixed"

Ronald G., OH (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPROGRAMMED. THE DEALER HAD THE CAR FOR ABOUT AN HOUR. FORD HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE TRANSMISSION COMPUTER TO 250000 MILES OR FOR 15 YEARS. THAT WARRANTY CAN BE PASSED ON TO ADDITIONAL OWNERS"

Joel H., MN (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford can’t seem to figure much out"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"dual clutch issue - the car shook when starting from a stop. There is a class action lawsuit on this"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Fiesta)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"The electrical problem referred to was the battery going flat after driving 500 miles. We were on vacation and half way up Mount Evans in Colorado at the time. To get us going again we had someone jump the car. This blew the Transmission sensor or solenoid and resulted in the transmission not working properly. We had the car towed into Denver and it was fixed at Ford Dealership at no charge. We did however have to stay at Hotel for two days waiting for it."

Anonymous, KS (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"they said the clutch replacement would help it didn't!"

Sharon W., CA (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Started having problems really early in purchase. Many adjustments now we are waiting on clutch replacement. 12 week wait"

Shirley J., TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Warranty work, no cost, car was still working clutch just slipping on occasion. Took 2 weeks to get parts and have repaired. Ford doesn't stock parts even for known issues"

Anonymous, BC (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Rough/chattering shifts caused by fluid leaking onto clutch. Required clutch replacement and complete seals replacement"

Milton W., TX (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch problem is part of a recall"

David H., WY (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This was a known problem that had a recall and the automatic clutch was replaced for $100"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This car only has about 31,000 miles on it. At approximately 30,500 miles the clutch had to be replaced. This was the second time the clutch had to be replaced. The first time was about at 10,000 miles."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch was causing "shuddering" under various shifting situations. The free Ford warranty extension was going to expire in a few months, so I took it to the dealer. They tore into it and confirmed that it would fall under the warrantee for a "free replacement." However, in order to do this, they also had to replace the rear main engine seal at a negotiated price of $650 out-the-door. This supposed seal failure was said to be the cause of the clutch failure. I did not believe this, but the part apparently needed to be replaced and was not included in the current warranty. I felt I had no choice other than to pay that fee. The "shudder" issue existed most of the time since I bought the Fiesta and, if the seal was the real cause, it must have failed very early--while still under warranty. Since the clutch replacement, the "shudder" is cured and I have no issues with the vehicle. In fact, it probably runs better than it ever has."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"I bought the vehicle used but fortunately the previous owner had purchased an extended warranty that cost me only a $100 to repair. Had I known about the clutch/transmission problems ahead of time I probably would not have purchased the car. Turns out it was a problem well-known by Ford."

Gary E., TX (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutch has been replaced TWICE in 44000 miles. Both were covered by warranty, but both took car out of service for 2 days. The transmissionin this car can only be described as a piece of shit."

Albert P., OH (2014 Ford Fiesta 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This transmission has known issues and has had known issues by Ford for several model years. Ford will not take responsibility. There are two class action lawsuits regarding this issue."

Tim M., CO (2014 Ford Fiesta S 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch in this automatic transmission has been replaced 4 times, only once last year. It was covered by federal notice until 100000 miles"

Brian B., MN (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Ford replaced clutch said they all have to be replaced sooner or later"

John W., CA (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"It was replaced by the Ford dealer as a recall"

Paul L., MO (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Slipping"

W O., FL (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The dealer in Denver identified the clutch problem while fixing the solenoid. it was not considered serious and so we continued on our vacation to Utah and back to Kansas driving through the Rocky Mountains. Back in Kansas the clutches were replaced under my extended warranty and the car has worked fine since. This has fixed the grinding noise that would sometimes occur at low speeds when the transmission was not selecting the correct gear"

Anonymous, KS (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"I started having problems from early on. Went through several adjustments before it was replaced. I then had to have the clutch system replaced 2 more times after that. No having intermittent electrical issues. Car sometimes does not start, trouble with dashboard and radio. Not yet fixed. Currently with a law firm for lemon law suit."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Ford Fiesta 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This is a very common issue with Ford Fiestas built since 2011. Ford refuses to issue a recall. I had to pay for the clutch replacement out of pocket. Thankfully my local Ford dealer worked with me to get the price down a bit. This issue has affected thousands of Fiestas and there is even a class action lawsuit against Ford. They refused to offer me any type of financial assistance."

Tim M., CO (2014 Ford Fiesta S 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Clutches replaced still a problem with transmission jerking."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Ford Fiesta)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Transmission was chattering in low gear"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Rob R., CA (2014 Ford Fiesta Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Same issue as clutch, both replaced at the same time"

Anonymous, BC (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"This vehicle has a "sport" option on the automatic drive. It is supposed to be a cross between auto and manual drive. It had a recall and action against this particular model. Ford fixed it without any problems"

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"Driver side interior door grab bar (not the door latch release). Plastic snaps on upper grab bar broke off. The lower plastic snaps broke a month later. I've never, ever, in all the vehicles I've owned, had something like this happen. Replacement part+labor is $580, which is about one third of this vehicle's used car value according to NADA. I did not replace with Ford parts. I used an old military nylon strip (from a thing that goes boom) 12 inches in length, 2 inches wide, to replace the broken plastic handle. Used the screw within the door latch depression to secure the top of the nylon strip, and the screw within lower broke off portion of the bar to secure the bottom of the nylon strip. The plastic snap secure devices used for the Ford door grab bar are cheap plastic that will not survive strong winds when you open a door. Which happens often."

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Rubber moldings on the roof, both left and right side grooves just above the doors, came off in the wind. I used gorilla glue, then just taped them down. Eventually I forgot about them and then flew off one at a time while driving many miles."

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"The accessory belt frayed while driving. I had to pull over to the side of the road and have it towed to the dealership because it is not a design that you can change yourself. It happened when the car had 110568 miles on it. The dealer should have changed the belt at its 100,000 mile service and did not. Probably more of a dealer failure than a vehicle or belt failure."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Car stopped being reliable to start. Stopped once in traffic.towed to mechanic. Replaced cylinder head d/t leak in hose from radiator. Still problems. More work sent from our garage to outside machine shop for further work. Still did not fix problems. Took to dealership who said the engine needed to be replaced. Had already spent $3000, this would be an additional $6000. And we stille owed $600 on this 3 year old car. We were told all the parts were cheaply made. We turned in the plates and no longer drive the car."

Maria O., NC (2014 Ford Fiesta SE 1.0-L 3 Cyl turbo)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

What Owners Say

Overheating

"Ford is aware, Just got informed of a recall and repair in 4th quarter this years. If temp is high outside, and you are pulling a grade, it will always overheat, such as the Grapevine on I-5 in CA"
