The regular Toyota Prius is the most efficient car you can buy that doesn't have to be plugged into an electrical outlet. It gets an impressive 44 mpg overall in our testing--with plenty of room for five, a big flexible hatchback, a comfortable ride, and very secure handling. If there's a knock on the Prius, it isn't engaging to drive, feels underpowered and is loud when you ask for max power.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Getting the Prius Plug-in version includes a bigger battery that can be charged from any wall outlet, allowing the car to drive more on electricity and less on gas. A full charge gives an electric range of about 12 miles. While the battery was charged, we measured 67 mpg overall in combined city and highway driving.

Anonymous, ON (2014 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The map system requires periodic updates but they are woefully out of date, rendering them unusable. When roads are changed or improved, the system becomes useless. The most recent update (which cost about $200) still does not recognize road changes in the last two or so years"

L B., TX (2014 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Very, very slow, cumbersome and difficult to control. It does not recognize some address that are in the city of Saint Paul and were built in the early 1900's and still in current use. Address database is very incomplete"

Howard G., MN (2014 Toyota Prius Four Plug-in Hybrid)

"Very unreliable. Does not provide the most direct way to travel. Takes me way out of my way. Can't depend on it, so have had to quit using it. My iPhone is reliable. When I changed from the 2011 to the 2014, I was told that they had upgraded the"

Bruce C., ON (2014 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"The infocenter head unit has a short in it that make some of the sysmtems inoperable and other intermittent. In addition to GPS/Navigation system failure, bluetooth doesn't work, satellite radio doesn't work, radio works intermitantly, CD player doesn't work. This is an issue that many other owners have experienced base on internet blogs. My dealer also acknowledges that it occures often enough that he has several repairs a month on this issue. It cost about $900 to replace. Since it occured well after warrenty period Toyota will not pay for it."

Anonymous, WV (2014 Toyota Prius Three 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Joseph L., HI (2014 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"Totally erratic...works sometimes but only with one of our two phones. Never able to download contacts from 2nd phone. Refuses to recognize 2nd phone even though it shows up on the list of paired devises. A totally unsatisfactory system. Gps input is utterly unfriendly. We use our phones google maps instead."

Mike G., AZ (2014 Toyota Prius Five Hybrid)

"The problem affected the radio, CD player, Bluetooth system, entire display screen for radio, CD player, Bluetooth system and back up camera. The entire system went bad and could not be repaired by the dealer. I had to have the entire unit replaced, which cost me $800. These elements would constantly shut on and then shut off. The controls would not operate the radio on-off switch, volume or station changing features. Sometimes the system would go on for a few seconds and then begin to cycle on and then off. The back up camera might work for a few minutes or a few seconds and then start cycling on and off. I considered selling the car but have decided to keep it for now, since the replacement unit is covered by a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty."

Robert F., GA (2014 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)
Speakers

"Periodically, all sound is lost, including the radio and ability to use the car phone, blue tooth, etc. In a day or two, sound returns. I've made two separate appointments wtih the dealer, but by the time I take it in, the problem has disappeared. So the dealership tells me to return when it happens again."

"press the up or down to change stations and the band changes. AM to FM,etc"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"daytime running lights not connected at factory"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Toyota Prius Three Hybrid)

"Headlight bulbs do not last very long. The regularly burn out. They are impossible for me to change due to difficult access. Toyota dealer (Stone Mountain Toyota) changed and installed new bulbs incorrectly. It was like I had no headlights because they were aimed at the ground in front of the car. Dealer was unable to figure out what he did wrong. The dealer said there was nothing wrong with the lights. It was my imagination. I could not see the road at night. It was not safe. I went to another Toyota dealer (Milton Martin) who was able to immediately fix the problem. They said the bulbs had not been installed correctly. Both dealers said that headlight bulbs in the Prius models do not last very long and must be changed often. They did not provide a reason for this problem."

Anonymous, GA (2014 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Replacing a headlight bulb is virtually impossible by the owner. I had to have the dealer do it for me at my expense."

James M., AR (2014 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Dealership didn't want to fix, then tried and failed. My husband made necessary adjustments."

Anonymous, MT (2014 Toyota Prius Four 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I've had to change the headlghts several times. I know the older prius have had this problem. I think they still have a problem."

Daya F., CA (2014 Toyota Prius Two 1.8-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"I took my 2014 Prius in to Stone Mountain Toyota to have the headlight bulbs replaced. The headlights seemed to have both failed at the same time. Premature headlight failure is apparently a common problem with the Prius. I was charged several hundred dollars for this service. When I drove the Prius at night for the first time after the headlamp replacement, I could not see the road in front of the car. The lights were working, but seemed to be improperly aimed. The road and objects in front of the car were not illuminated by the headlights. I took the car back to the dealer and they insisted there was nothing wrong with the lights. I left the car with them for several days so they could drive it at night to see the problem for themselves. I could not use the car at night for several weeks. I then took the Prius back to the original dealer from whom I had purchased it (35 miles away). Milton Martin Toyota was immediately able to diagnose the problem. The light bulbs were improperly installed. The bulbs were not seated properly in the opening and were not positioned to light the road ahead. Once the bulbs were correctly installed, they worked just fine and I was able to use the car at night again. I was warned to keep watch on the bulbs because they would probably burn out much sooner then on the typical car. I learned on-line that this has been a continuing problem for the Prius. The headlight bulbs get too much voltage and the bulbs burn out much sooner than bulbs on other cars. There is apparently a problem with untrained mechanics and some owners improperly installing the headlight bulbs and having the same problem I had with night visibility. I feel that this is a manufacturing or design defect that should be corrected. This is a major safety issue."

"Electronic door locks sporadically quit working on our 2014 Prius Advanced. They are very expensive to replace at $500+ each. This is my second Prius, and my previous Prius (2007) had the same issues. Was hoping Toyota would have figured this out by now, but they obviously have not. Very disappointing."

I explained the problem is the car has to be driven 20-minutes and the dash will rattle non-stop so loud it is over the radio. Dealer takes it for local 5-minute rides and can't find the trouble and tell us we are being to fuzzy. Guess what this is the last Toyota I am purchasing. "Living in a cold Province (in Canada), we need to plug in an engine warmer (I think it keeps the oil liquid) when parked for long periods of time. Usually we leave the cord attached to the car and then hang the cord on the driver's side mirror when driving. Doing this the cord rests against the hood and front side. I found that it caused scratches on the paint and shallow abrasions. I have never had this happen on any other car previously."

"The problems is more accurately defined as oil consumption since leaking was not the true cause. Between 120000 and 125000 miles Something, still unknown, happened to cause the warning light to suddenly come on at the 5000 mile maintenance time with the dealer. Some checks were run to try and determine the cause, but all came out negative. At that point gas milage also began to decline significantly. My personal suspicions have never been confirmed and no alternate cause has been offered."
