Although the Escape was freshened for 2008, still more changes came for 2009. Both the four-cylinder and V6 engines received more power. Performance is adequate with the new 2.5-liter, 171-hp four-cylinder engine, which also returns 21 mpg overall. Stability control became standard across the line. Long stopping distances, a major shortcoming of the 2008 Escape we tested, were improved.

Leesa W., KS (2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 2.3-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"A part of the braking system broke in the front wheel. This caused the ABS to apply itself, even when there was no reason to. There was no clear reason given for the part to break, no cause, it just broke at random. Our mechanics were puzzled"

Deborah B., BC (2008 Ford Escape Hybrid 2.3-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"Took the car to Brake Check for routine brake repair and had to take it back 10 months later for the exact same thing. We believe it is an issue with their parts and labor and not the actual vehicle. Prior to that, we had driven the vehicle for 3 years and not had any issues. We have not changed our driving habits and should not have needed to replace the brakes a second time so quickly"

Anonymous, TX (2008 Ford Escape XLT 2.3-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

What Owners Say

R C., OH (2008 Ford Escape Limited 3.0-L V6)

"We recently discovered an area of rust around both rear wheel arches. A reputable body shop confirmed that it has rusted through not only the outer skin, but the inner sheet metal, as well. $2000 to repair. UNACCEPTABLE for a 2008 vehicle!"

Michele G., SC (2008 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"There is a minor oil leak that can't not be located in the engine compartment. I have cleaned the engine off to try and locate the leak, but can't in my garage. Ditto after taking it to both an authorized FORD dealership/service center and even with an independent mechanic shop. That is unless I was willing to surrender my vehicle for greater than 48 hours and spend time with a full engine tear down. The amount leaking compared to oil servicing does not make this worth while at this time. Best guess from both Ford Service and independent is some engine seals are going bad and leaking at this time as they begin to fail."
