Little had changed with the Ford Escape since 2001. The four-cylinder and V6 engines are noisy. All three versions we tested had an unsettled ride and notable noise. Interior fit and finish is improved but remains lackluster. Virtues include interior spaciousness, easy access, and good visibility. Improved braking performance helps as well.

"passenger rear wheel-well of my escape is a persistent rust problem. I took it to a top notch body shop in 2015. They repaired in and provided a lifetime warranty for work. Rust has re-occured in same spot several times. I have had to take it back to shop twice since first repair. it's become an annual recoccurrance. This is a huge problem for this vehicle."

"Rust: Since I have had this car there is a problem with rust in the rear quarter panels and the inside edge of the lift gate. It has been repainted by a pro shop 3 times and the rust keeps returning. According to experts, it is a design flaw from Ford which is aware but refuses to fix after the warranty is over."

Anonymous, OR (2009 Ford Escape Limited 3.0-L V6)

"Rust around rear fender wells. This is a major issue with 2008-2012 Ford Escapes. Many others have experienced. It is design flaw that allows moisture to get between the inner and outer panels of the fender, causing major rust which ruins the fender. Very expensive to fix."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"Although this vehicle is a 2009 Ford it seems like all of the seals around the driver's door and the rear liftgate all began to erode at the same time. The rubber and the adhesive holding the seals to both locations began to come undone, almost completely, and needed replacing (out-of-warranty) which was pricey. Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

Virginia K., OH (2009 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the 3rd time I’ve had problems with the air conditioning. The previous 2 times it required major replacements. The only thing I got from my Ford dealer was that sometimes you just get a car with problems. This is first time with different problem. How can I feel sure it has been fixed correctly?"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The A/C compressor spews smoke and screeches if A/C is turned on. As I live in the Great Lakes area, the compressor is used infrequently. Two quotes for repair are both $1,00 or better. The lack of A/C has caused a great deal of trouble whenever it rains as I must drive with the windows open and get wet, pull over until the rain stops, or turn on the heat to see out of the windows. The need to pull over on the Thruway was dangerous and should never have been necessary."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Ford Escape)
Automatic climate control

"When shifting from reverse to forward the motor jumps when not completely stopped."

Frederick V., PR (2009 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The rough shifting was partially solved by the dealer with a computer adjustment. While somewhat unrelated, my biggest complaint has to do with the fact that I purchased this vehicle for towing 4 wheels down behind our motorhome. The owners manual indicated that this could be done. Shortly after purchase I was notified that the only way the vehicle could be towed in this matter would be to adjust the transmission fluid to the lowest level. Many buyers who purchased this vehicle for towing did not get this notification ruined the transmission. Ford has been defensive about this problem, telling me first that they would pay to have a transmission fluid circulation pump installed, then reneging. By adhering to the specified procedure I have been able to avoid problems, but always worry that while towing I may burn up the transmission and be stranded during our travels."
