Little had changed with the Ford Escape since 2001. The four-cylinder and V6 engines are noisy. All three versions we tested had an unsettled ride and notable noise. Interior fit and finish is improved but remains lackluster. Virtues include interior spaciousness, easy access, and good visibility. Improved braking performance helps as well. A rear-view camera was made optional for 2010.

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Just after 2 year paint warranty had expired, the rear wheel well edges started peeling, and then rusting. Paint has peeled off the rear door bottom edge. Other than those two areas no other concerns re. paint but disappointed that dealer unwilling to correct problem other than charge me like $1200.00 to repair flaking paint."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"paint is chipping off & rust is forming around the tailgate"

Anonymous, IA (2011 Ford Escape XLS 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Rust and paint bubbling on tail gate and rear quarter panels"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Escape Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint began peeling from around both real wheel wells leading to surface rust. Paint around rear liftgate window had degraded which led to rust underneath and around gasket. Repair shop said this was common in all Escapes of this vintage. We'd rust-sprayed this vehicle annually (Krown). Not happy. Our 2007 Explorer had had no similar problems, despite being five years older in the same environment"

Michael P., ON (2011 Ford Escape XLS 3.0-L V6)

"Paint peeling off after 2.5 year, so past paint warranty. Dealer would not do anything, as it was past warranty period. Continues to peel off such that you can see pristine primer under the paint that is peeling off. I have seen many many Escapes of various colours with this same issue"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"Paint peeled off around bottom of rear passenger doors and rear hatch door. Also severe rusting on the same locations"

Donelda M., ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"Paint pealing in wheel wells. Stone shops on hood. Rust on bottom of back hatch door. When vehicle was purchased paid $1000.00 for the clear coat which was supposed to guarantee no paint chips etc. it only covered the wheel wells and not all the stone chips, door dings etc will never purchase the coating again"

Ralph S., ON (2011 Ford Escape Limited 3.0-L V6)

"Paint cracking above front wind shield"

Edward G., AZ (2011 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint is peeling above wheel on drivers side back. Rust is coming through. I paid for ziebart. No coverage for issue. Brakes wore out and Michelin tires wore out before 34000miles. Once I finish paying for this crap car I will NEVER buy another Ford"

Helen L., NY (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"WE had a couple of small areas on the truck that were beginning to bubble up and crack. We sent it to the dealership for repair which took them a full week instead of the three days they estimated"

Anonymous, ID (2011 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Peeling on both rear wheel wells and the tailgate bottom. This is a mature product and there is no excuse for this defect. No other vehicle that I have owned has done this. That is 16 over the years. Total fail by FORD Motor Co."

David W., ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"T%he paint has peeled in the same areas where I am experiencing rust"

Anonymous, (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford Escape 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Rust

"After the paint flaked off down to the primer, then the rust would set in. Had to sand it by hand, reprime and paint. Way too many Escapes driving around with the same problem for Ford to NOT do some corrective measures. All with rear wheel well edges and read door bottom edges receiving poor metal prep prior to painting, or clogged nozzles at the paint facility."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 3.0-L V6)

"I underneath metal had rusted so would not pass inspection"

Anonymous, NH (2011 Ford Escape 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

ALso the driver's door has weather stripping along the rocker panel and it's prone to being kicked during ingress / egress. That stripping is now loose and ripping. Robbie P., BC (2011 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When I was driving about 35 miles an hour, all of a sudden there was no power in the gas peddle. Everything was running, lights, radio, etc. But I couldn't go forward. Almost caused a big wreck. I coasted off the road and turned it off. Waited a few minutes and then turned it on. It took off like nothing had happened, Drove it to my dealership. They put in 2 parts that were over $750. Luckily they were under warranty - no charge. I love my Escape."

Sunroof

"The front of moon roof sits slightly recessed when in the normal close position. This allows water to pool there after rains. I live in a high rain area so the pooling is frequent. Aver time,, this pooling allowed corrosion to set in. Eventually, the corrosion ate through the exterior roof at the moon roof leading edge. This allowed water to run down the inside of the paneling into the interior or the vehicle causing mold and minor electrical issue. I finally figured out what was going on and seals the moon roof with silicone. I can't open the moon roof, but that is a small price to pay for keeping the vehicle water tight."

Jerry B., HI (2011 Ford Escape Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

Voice control commands

"The SYNC voice interface for hands-free phone frequently gets stupid ie suddenly it can no longer understand call mom at home and comes up with things like you said call mom at work, right? (there is no work number in her account), or calling Jeff instead. Other times it works well. When it gets stupid sometimes power cycling my phone will get it working agin, other times only manually dialing clears the stupid. Updating the software was impossible last time I attempted (their web site is not Apple friendly). Seems as though keeing SYNC software current is a trivial task. How could Ford ever make an *electric* vehicle where software is an intrinsic part of the product? Or a self driving Ford?"

Stuart T., GA (2011 Ford Escape Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The fuel filler system has no actual cap. It has an auto closer feature that works fine. The exception is the emission detection system flags that there is a vapour leak. There is no leak and the you tube fix is simple but annoying. Clear the check engine light and carry on. Another 1000 km and up again. The Ford dealer fix is to totally replace the entire filler system from the tank up. The next generation Escape has a reworked filler neck that hss no complaints. Design flaw"

David W., ON (2011 Ford Escape XLT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Fuel gauge/sender

"The fuel gauge / fuel pump have had issues, and the fuel gauge will never get to Full. It now will go to Empty even when it's full, and the check engine light will come on. We've been told that the gas tank will need to be dropped to take care of any fuel gauge / fuel pump issues."
