What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The camera will sporadically not function at all. Dealership cannot find a problem. It seems to happen in cold weather more frequently. It has not been resolved"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Back up camera works intermittently."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Escape)
CD player

"When the radio stops working, so does the CD player and the screen goes blank. Even after bringing it in for service the radio still stops playing. It won't play during startup"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Escape)
Display screen freezes up

"Display screen jumps from screen to screen erratically after 3-year warranty expired. Updating software did not help; service tech had not other recommendations."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Computer needed to be replaced, but warranty covered replacement."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The screen went gray and affected all systems to some extent in the car so that I was not comfortable driving it safely. The internal hard drive was cleaned up and rebooted twice in one week. No problems since."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Display freezes or jumps from screen to screen. Note: SYNC problem began after 3-yr warranty expired."

R L., KS (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio will freeze and need to shut down and restart automobile for it to work"

Luis H., FL (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes, for no reason while driving it just freezes.... Normally, by turning the vehicle off....waiting abt 2 minutes and turning back on the screen is fine"

Sabrina R., FL (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The MyTouch Sync 3 system slowly failed (got worse over time) and needed to be totally replaced. All issues I checked were related to the system failure"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio buttons of front fascia and the module are defective and were replace cover by the warranty"

Orlando C., PR (2016 Ford Escape S 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"The display that show's the mileage and speed among other things flickered a while then went blank. I have not resolved but believe it will need to be replaced."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Unit froze and a new unit was put in under extended warranty"

Anonymous, (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Display is in color, however it changes to nothing or black and white."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes when I start the car the display screen stays blank...meaning IU can NOT use the cell, the radio, the CD player, the Navigation, etc... Usually, if I turn the car off and wait 5 minutes and turn back on the screen is working again... It's more than a coincidence it seems to be tied in to the remote start....for that is the ONLY time I have the issue....."

Sabrina R., FL (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The Sync system developed a malfunction that caused it to intermittently stop working in one or more areas. It required a replacement of the entire module, and a lot of inconvenience for us."

Anna G., TX (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"sometimes when starting the vehicle REMOTELY the screen does NOT come on....and no functions are available. When I turn the vehicle off and wait abt 2 minutes and turn the vehicle back on the screen and all its' functions works again"

Sabrina R., FL (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Intermittently goes blank"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Escape 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"lost all of screen display"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Escape S)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"It tended to not want to pair with my phone. Resetting the Bluetooth connection helped."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sometimes the bluetooth just will NOT sync up. Usually, if I turn the car off for 5 minutes and try again it will work. Same with the blank screen."

Sabrina R., FL (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I started to get error messages that my phone was not compatible with Synch after 2 years. Error messages started to be only when I sharted up the car, but then they gradually became more frequent. After a while (3 months?) I took the card to Ford, and the person said the problem was with my phone. I bought a new phone. Same issue. Went back to Ford and different person discovered that the Synch software had never updated since I bought the car in 2016! I paid for a new phone for nothing!"

Judith S., CA (2016 Ford Escape)

"It's terrible. Randomly restarts songs from beginning, switches from playing an album in order to playing all songs on my iPod in shuffle mode, and far too often starts on the first song listed alphabetically (The A Team by Ed Sheeran, which i now hate) even though I was playing an album or playlist when the vehicle was turned off. Also, it takes a long time to index songs each time i turn on vehicle so i cannot immediately browse for music, but instead must listen to The A Team, again"

Peter F., CT (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Same thing - difficulty pairing on and off"

Marilyn H., CA (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Hardware replacement

"The SYNC unit would automatically update software frequently. When it updated, all phones that were synced to it would be gone, we would have to pair them again. This was a continuous problem and had it to the dealership 3 times before I went in one last time to tell my salesman that if it wasn't corrected properly, I would not be back for my next vehicle. He got the general manager involved, and it was finally taken care of properly."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"would have pop up message; not operating at this time ( or something similar to this)"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It functions as designed, but the features are scanty and poor. This is a Tom-Tom system, utterly inferior to after-market Garmin systems. We are disgusted and disappointed that this is such a poor system."

Don H., VA (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"system stopped functioning - returned to dealer - failed again - returned to dealer - failed again - returned to dealer - replaced computing unit seems ok now"

Barbara B., CA (2016 Ford Escape)

"difficult to see when driving, instead of keeping north at the top of the map, the map is constantly turning (stupid), poor graphics"

Norene F., NE (2016 Ford Escape)

"Crude and not nearly as good as the aftermarket Garmin GPS's in my other cars"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Mine tended to happen randomly. My dealer had to re set my Bluetooth connection."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When my phone is connected through Bluetooth the system will frequently kick it off and act like there are no phones available for it to connect it to. I then have to wait until I'm at a complete stop and add my phone into the system all over again."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Escape SE Unsure)

"Will not sink with my phone."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Highly intermittent. Ford technicians in two major cities could not figure out the problem. Ford customer relations gave no help, either. We are disgusted and angry."

Don H., VA (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Phone shows phone connected but apps would not work such as pandora or phone would not connect"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Ford stated to me that the Sync feature would allow me to sync my phone to the vehicle. If I had an app on the phone it would be available to view on the vehicle screen, example: my map/direction app on the phone would be available on the vehicle. After several attempts at the dealership with the head of the repair/service area trying to get it to work properly I still have no Sync working properly. My guess is that Sync is a Microsoft feature, I happen to use an Apple IPhone, could it be that Microsoft would not recognize my Apple product???"

Anonymous, MN (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Ford system is supposed to link with Apple iPhone via AppleTalk. This failed, and the dealer cannot fix it."

Don H., VA (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Off and on. Often will NEVER pair, or will continue to see "buffering" When working fine on my smartphone or in other vehicles. 8 hate this system. I finally just give up most of the time when it works it's good, but it is off and on. The Bluetooth for purchased (even free) music is a must when I purchase a vehicle. My previous vehicle was FORD EDGE and had a surely no problems with vehicle"

Marilyn H., CA (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Stopped working in first week, electronics are screwed in this car"

Melissa R., CO (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The system will dial a number and connect but will not transmit my voice so the person called cannot hear me"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"Radio audio stopped working"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio fells to come on. Have to stop car and shut it off before it will come on. problem is intermitant. It happens a lot then works ok for a while then starts up again. The odometer also registers about two miles more per gallon than I what I get."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"AM radio failed - returned to dealer told antenna was problem (arena not installed by dealer at purchase - radio failed again - told problem was having car washed with power brush (not the case) - returned to dealer - radio replaced seems ok now"

Barbara B., CA (2016 Ford Escape)

"Only way to get radio to turn on sometimes was to turn engine off and then on again. This went on for over 2 years!"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sirius XM will lose signal every time I drive by a cell tower"

Luis H., FL (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Radio difficult to tune. cannot select and maintain desired stations"

Clayton O., MA (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"bad reception using xm radio....loses signal quite often"

Willie C., IL (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"after several times bringing the car back because of problems with the radio we were told that when update was available they would inform us and we could bring the car in and they would install the update I had to bring the car in for inspection and figured they could install it, then were told it would be $100 for the update. This was never discussed before and we had brought the car in several times because of the radio. (Actually 6 times). After fighting with the service manager and Ford"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Ford Escape)

"It stops working randomly. Bluetooth stopped working completely temperture guage stuck. Electronics in this car all screwed up"

Melissa R., CO (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Software update fixes

"Car software updates by dealer did not fix the erratic screen displays, which started after 3-year warranty expired, and continues to annoy us when we drive. Satellite radio software updates regularly with no problem."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Ford Escape Titanium 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The software is constantly updating itself. Upon updating, it loses all information regarding Bluetooth, leaving me to have to pair our phones. Normally I would understand this is a necessity. However, this happens way too often. Never goes more than a month without doing this. When it does do this update, it will then update 4 to 5 times in a week, and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It happens so often it is not worth it anymore. I will not buy another vehicle with the SYNC system."

Patrick H., ON (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel controls

"Left side controls are not working properly."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The steering wheel controls for sync to make phone calls at times will not function. I have discovered if I put a CD in and play it manually I can get control of the sync system again on my steering wheel. It has not been resolved"

"The on-steering-wheel navigation button malfunctions. We have not had time to take it into the dealership"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Ford Escape 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The car locked up and would not go into park. It ended up being a heated seat wiring issue that shut down the electronics. It was a warranty claim and everything has worked well since it was fixed"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Ford Escape SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"Don't live up to what they are supposed to do. All I can do is phone someone in my phonebook, none of the other items it's supposed to do."

Judith S., CA (2016 Ford Escape)

"Half the time is does work"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Since I've had this car I've had to replace the driver side door seal and the rear dor seal. Ford paid for the drivers side, but then wouldn't for the other. It had exactly the same type of deterioration as the drivers door seal had. It's like the seal material was not good as in rotten."

Brian T., WA (2016 Ford Escape SE 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

AIR BAGS
Jun 26, 2017
In the event of a crash, if the driver's knee air bag does not inflate as intended, the driver has an increased risk of injury.
Summary:
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016 Ford Escape vehicles. The driver's knee airbag modules installed in these vehicles were produced without the inflator gas generant material, and, as a result, the air bags may not inflate properly in the event of a crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
What should you do:
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace driver's knee air bag, free of charge. The recall began on August 8, 2017. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17C11.
