2003 Ford F-250 Reliability - Consumer Reports
A heavy duty good for 3/4 ton capacity as opposed to the 1/2 ton of the F-150. The Super Duty doesn't get the 2004 redesign until later. The ride is stiff and bouncy. The new 6.0-liter Diesel packs some real punch and is fairly quiet and free of vibration. Stepping into the cabin is more difficult because of the high floor.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint has been fading and oxidized for last three years"

William M., TX (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"fading and chalking of roof. Also somewhat on the hood. Otherwise paint looks great for a 14 year old"

Anonymous, FL (2003 Ford F-250 Lariat 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"After buying the truck used in 2006, and after more years in the Texas sun, I noticed the clear coat peeling on the the roof. Over time the clear coating film was bubbling on not only the roof but now on all the tops of all four doors down to the base of all the windows. On the bottom half of the truck and the hood, paint and clear coat are fine. Go figure. The paint is not peeling. Under the clear coat film, the paint is dull, but not peeling"

Stephan S., TX (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"Clearcoat peeling. Had the roof and hood repainted at 11 years old and clearcoat re-done all over. Color is deep red and I think it is more affected by heat degradation. My other older vehicles are white and with good paint still."

Roger R., CA (2003 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.8-L V10)

"Roof of cab has rust spots. Small dots of paint have flecked off around truck bed. Chrome finish sheds from front bumper. Hood has some rust spots."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Ford F-250 XL 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"Clear coat pealing"

John F., AZ (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Goes along with answer about the rust"

Leslie P., WI (2003 Ford F-250 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"The undercoat is doing its job to prevent rust; but the paint is separating around the windshield! May be from windshield replacements!"

Anonymous, AB (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 6.0-L V8 diesel)

"Paint on the top of the cab is starting to chip and peel."

Anonymous, WA (2003 Ford F-250 XL 5.4-L V8)

"Bed rusted from underside side step ups bolts pulled through edge of wheel wells rusted through"

Robert L., MI (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"Roof rusted through and I keep chasing small patches of rust forming under what appears to be good paint. Granted, it is 16 years old, but you would not guess it other than peeling clearcoat and some fading. Mechanically it has been an amazingly reliable tow vehicle."

Roger R., CA (2003 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.8-L V10)

"starting to show some bubbling and rust around the wheel wells"

Anonymous, WI (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 6.0-L V8 diesel)

"The rust is bad in the fender wells and under the doors. It is put in a shed every night"

Anonymous, IL (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"This vehicle is a maintenance nightmare-starter failure, transmisson pan rusted and leaking, brakelines rusted and leaking causing brake failure, radiator replace because of leaking, brake shoes and rotors replaced-rusted, and this vehicle is garaged"

Rich C., OH (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"This was purchased in New England area. I was aware of some rust, but it seems extensive"

Anonymous, NC (2003 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"My 2002 VW has NO rust. The Ford is one year newer and it has terrible rust around the real wheels, bottom of the doors, and on the oil pan. My husband will probably sell this car due too the rust when it should last 200,000 longer. It has the best"

Leslie P., WI (2003 Ford F-250 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"Fender wheel wells, and bottom of both front doors, and gas tank straps, and brake lines, and emergency brake cables and fittings have prolific rust and failures"

Anonymous, CA (2003 Ford F-250 XL 7.3-L V8 diesel)

"At 16 years-old, my F-250 Super Duty 7.3 diesel developed an oil leak from somewhere in the engine compartment. Instead of pursuing cause of the leak, I put down a drip pan where the truck is parked. If the drip pan is a reliable indicator, the leak doesn't amount to a lot of lost oil; truck gets used about once a week, I check the level every 2 weeks. Before leak, I'd add a quart of oil somewhere around 4000 miles after oil change; takes many months to reach that 4000 mile mark driving the truck only once a week. Accordingly, should take a long while before I notice how severe the leak is by how much oil has gone missing."

Took to nearest general repair to check fluid, it held 2 qts. Then to to transmission repair shop. After repairman looked at it he advised to continue to drive pickup, that transmission would do that after being driven hard pulling. We are continuing to drive without further incident."
