The F-250 Super Duty is based on Ford's commercial truck platform. It's a work truck with moderate payload capacity, great towing capability and little else to recommend it, thanks to a lousy ride and mediocre brakes. Uncomfortable seats detract further from the driving experience. Stability control, full-time four-wheel drive, and curtain airbags are all lacking.

"Steering wheel is "lose" and wanders when you're driving it. Difficult not to over-correct it"

Shannon G., AK (2008 Ford F-250 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Started having severe vibration in front end when it hit certain bumps in the road while traveling at highway speeds. Research led me to discover this is a common problem with Ford Super Duty trucks starting in 2005 commonly referred to as the "Ford Death Wobble" The problem first appeared a couple of years ago and would only happen infrequently. Last summer while driving home from a fishing trip to Canada, it started happening repeatedly. The only way I made it home was to reduce my speed to <45 mph and stay in the right-hand lane on the freeway. If I saw any cracks or visible bumps in the road I would slow even further. At the time I didn't know what was causing the issue. When I finally made it home (12 driving hours later), I inspected under the front end and discovered the track-bar bushing was completely destroyed and the steering dampener shock was worn out. I ordered the parts and replaced both of these. I then had a complete alignment and inspection done by a local tire company. Everything seemed to work OK for a while, but within the past 3 months I have noticed the vibration (shimmy) coming back in the steering wheel and have experienced the severe vibration a couple of times. I am getting ready to replace most of the components of the front end suspension and steering."

"Driver side wheel bearing went out. Repaired under warranty, no problems"

Linda E., TX (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 5.4-L V8)

"Very pricey due to the fact that it is an entire unit that has to be replaced as opposed to other bearings that are replaced by broken components of the unit."

Anonymous, MA (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

Radiator

"The radiator problem was a common problem with the diesel engine. Ford manufactured these radiators of which they had faulty crimping of the radiator. Even though there were many online complaints and a Ford TSB about this problem Ford continued to fight customer complaints to replace this radiator."

Carl L., NJ (2008 Ford F-250 Harley-Davidson 6.4-L V8 diesel)

Anonymous, TN (2008 Ford F-250 FX4 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Routinely with every tank of diesel, the exhaust system regeneration would switch on creating terrible clouds of smoke choking innocent pedestrians and forcing vehicles traveling behind the truck to back off. With so much emphasis now on being "Gree"

Timothy S., BC (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Dealer who made repairs said problem was due to use of type of diesel fuel. More the 5% bio diesel"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"EGR value failed and has been replaced. Check engine light with emission control codes relating to DPF has gone off multiple times and the dealer has yet to find out why. Theory is that a sensor is throwing the code because it is getting hot."

Anonymous, OR (2008 Ford F-250 FX4 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"To clean the exhaust system, it dumps fuel into the engine or somewhere to burn the excess whatever up. Numerous faults appear, the regen cycle takes forever in which you're supposed to continue to drive until the engine temp reaches a certain point to burn the excess fuel dumped into the system. Sometimes its not worth the time/fuel spent to keep driving when you don't want/need to."

Martha G., MI (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)
Fuel gauge/sender

"Fuel gauge sender told ECU out of fuel and shut the engine off."

Anonymous, GA (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)

Marvin B., WI (2008 Ford F-250 XL 5.4-L V8)

"We live in VT so road salt is an issue. I have redone cab corners and this year had to replace the cross braces under the pickup bed"

Anonymous, VT (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)

"After speaking with numerous Ford truck owners I was advised that you need to have the underneath of the bed of the truck sprayed as well as the inside of it with a type of guard, aka: rhino guard, so it won't rust out like my truck has. The Ford F Series Pickup is #1 for a reason and doing the above mentioned procedure is a good/wise investment! Especially if you're going to invest in a Diesel like my truck is! The diesel engines will last 10 times longer than a normal gas engine, but the cost of engine repair or replacement is HIGHER so you must do your due diligence with maintenance! They're more powerful and get better gas mileage than the gas model does, PLUS there are more advantages!"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"It has minor rust around the driver back wheel well when we first bought it in 2016 that has continued to deteriorate extrememly. Now there is other rust showing up on doors and other wheel wells."

"Broken bolt - manifold"

Anonymous, BC (2008 Ford F-250 XLT 5.4-L V8)
Fuel leaks

"The design of the diesel emissions regeneration process for these engines causes fuel to be sucked into the crankcase. This causes extremely high levels of fuel in the engine oil amounts of 6 to 10 % . Over time this will cause the engine to wear out prematurely long before its normal lifespan. This premature failure has cost the owners thousands of dollars in repair. Diesel eng. is very expensive to repair more so than gas eng. Ford has created test that make it difficult to qualify for repair. Ford does not accept engine oil analysis that show high amounts of fuel in the oil. High amounts of fuel in the oil is dangerous. Engine oil analysis is the preferred way to test for high levels of fuel in the engine oil."

Carl L., NJ (2008 Ford F-250 Harley-Davidson 6.4-L V8 diesel)

"Ford 6.4 diesel eng. allow fuel to be sucked into the crankcase during engine regeneration. This is common. Fuel dilution of 10 % is common. Over time the bearings and eng. internal components will prematurely fail. Ford will not fix or admit proble"

Carl L., NJ (2008 Ford F-250)
Oil leaks

"THE rear seal on the engine leaked. The reason I believe this happened is THIS ENGINE MAKES ITS OWN OIL!!!! let me explain .I have had to EXTRACT a qt of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles do to OVER FILL of the crankcase. I have sent in a sample to OIL ANALYZERS LAB. The report came back FUEL DILUTION !! I wrote to FORD and they told me to take to my local FORD dealer. They had the truck for 4 days and could NOT find any thing wrong with it. STILL MAKING OIL!!!!"

Terry S., MO (2008 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.4-L V8 diesel)
Radio

"Over the life of this vehicle I have had intermittent but severe audio distortion with the radio that each dealer says they cannot find even though when I drove the vehicle I had this distortion. Ford Motor Company Refuses to help me resolve this problem. Only after 7 years did I force the dealer to listen to the radio as I was leaving after service and finally they admitted to a problem. I still have a Major Problem with Diesel Fuel getting into the crank case. Ford does not recognize this as a problem and does not test for fuel dilution. Fuel dilution is a serious problem that No One wants to address. This is my most serious complaint. Consumer Reports is not concerned with this problem either. Fuel dilution in Diesel and gasoline engines reduces the life of the engine considerably. In gasoline engines it could be explosive."
