The F-250 is a heavy duty truck with a 3/4 ton capacity as opposed to the 1/2 ton of the F-150. The Super Duty won't be redesigned until after 2004. The ride is stiff and bouncy. Ford's new 6.0-liter diesel packs some real punch and is fairly quiet and free of vibration. Stepping into the cabin is more difficult because of the high floor.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2004 Ford F-250 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"With about 120000 miles on vehicle all injectors, head gaskets, oil cooler and other major componants on the upper engine block had to be replaced. Cost over $7000. All of the typical problems with the 6.0 engine. You will be extremely wise to do your research on this engine before buying into it!"

Anonymous, MN (2004 Ford F-250 XLT 6.0-L V8 diesel)

"This diesel engine is the one built by a contractor. The head bolts stretched and the entire engine had to be rebuilt. $12,000 out of pocket expense. Ford has a law suit against contractor but that doesn't help our major out of pocket expense"

Don W., TX (2004 Ford F-250 XL 6.0-L V8 diesel)

"The engine locked and I had to replace it in it's entirety"

Florena C., MD (2004 Ford F-250 XL 5.4-L V8)

"Ford only used to pull Horse & Flat Bed Trailers. Would have been PERFECT with a Cummins engine."

Anonymous, CO (2004 Ford F-250 XLT 6.0-L V8 diesel)
Head gasket

"The egr failed. This put coolant in the intake. This blew the headgaskets. I had to rebuild the engine. I "bullet proofed" it for $7000. Added oil to air heat exchanger, bullet proof egr, studs, etc"
