Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

This version of the F-250 Super Duty has many strong points. The Ford-built Powerstroke 6.4-liter turbodiesel V8 got the best fuel economy among the heavy-duty diesel trucks of its day, while providing plenty of towing and payload-hauling capability.

Cabin space is generous, with a large backseat and abundant storage. Nice features abound, including an optional tailgate step and built-in switches for accessories. But the truck also has several dynamic shortcomings. A stiff ride and a lack of agility are typical for the class. Stopping distances are long and the F-250's emergency handling has very low limits, even compared to other heavy-duty trucks.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

Anonymous, MI (2011 Ford F-250 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"The door trim running along doors on both sides about 1 foot from the bottom discolored within a couple of years. No easy fix as they are glued on and the dealer can only suggest that they be taken off, painted and re applied - quite expensive (several hundred dollars) and I am not convinced that the fix is durable either. Don't remember he cost of new trim, but it was outrageous"

Transmission sensor or solenoid

"Transmission will violently shake the whole truck. Three times the dealer has replaced the same three solenoids. Cures it for a while then the shaking returns. I had to pay to replace the solenoids the first time, subsequent two times have been under the 2 year parts & Labor guarantee"

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Differential

"193000 miles differential gears broke and jammed the wheels so they would not turn. The rear end had a lot of slack in it before failure. I had taken it to the dealer for service, but they declined, saying that it was very worn and that it would be cheaper to replace the axle with a used low mileage unit. I use this truck for towing my 16,000lb 5th wheel, so I flogged the rear end until it failed. Which was spectaular in that it split the differential housing in two. I could have replaced it at any time before that, but I wanted proof that it was really going to break."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Electrical failure

"Less than one year after I paid over $2000 to have the evaporator replaced, the HVAC blower would not turn on. I returned to the dealer who had performed the evaporator work and they informed me a resistor needed to be replaced. However, the resistor was located such that the dashboard needed to be removed. Of course the labor charges for this are huge. I refused the repair and will use the truck without a blower."
