The Ford F-250 has always had a single-mind focus: handle heavy loads and tough jobs. The redesigned 2017 model builds on that legacy by reducing the beast's overall weight and going heavy on refinement and technology. Of all HD trucks, the F-250 is a unanimous favorite among our staff.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Ford F-250 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"vehicle was delivered out of alignment and has been back 2 times and still not fixed"

Anonymous, NM (2017 Ford F-250 XL 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Electronic or air suspension

"Wheel position Sensor"

Dennis T., TX (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Shocks or struts

"Stock shock absorbers initially created absolutely unacceptable ride. Every bump was sharp with no give from the shocks! Horrible. I would get a headache from the constant jarring. After about 4000 miles, they broke in and the ride is now acceptable for a 3.4 ton truck. I've been driving this type of pick up for 50 years and never had one or driven one, that rode that bad. I should have changed the shocks the day I purchased the truck. Ford needs to find a different shock supplier!! These were not the HD shocks."

Steve S., CA (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Couple years ago, repaired as part of a recall."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Steering wheel vibration

"Violent vibration in conjunction with same problem described previously with tie rods."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Ford had TSB to replace steering damper on tie rods"

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Truck came new from the factory with bad alignment. Caster was set at negative when it should've been at positive 3 or 4. This caused the steering damper to wear out prematurely at 6000 mi on ODO. The truck started death wobbling, which is an extreme steering oscillation that would make the truck undriveable and dangerous to the driver and others on the road. Ford was reluctant to fix. Could've been the dealership I was dealing with. I bought dual steering stabilizer kit aftermarket and installed myself. This helped make the truck driveable but still uncomfortable. Also had rear wheel bearings replaced, fuel pump replaced, u-joint in driveshaft replaced, doors squeak extremely loud even after greasing. If I bought another 3/4 ton truck would definitely be dodge or CHEVROLET. Engine, transmission, 4x4, AC have been good."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 XL 6.2-L V8)

"Couple years ago. It's now a recall."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"While driving at highway speeds, I crossed onto a bridge with a small transitional bump and the front end of the truck began to shake violently. The only way to get it to stop was to slow the vehicle to approximately 45 mph. It has happened several times at random and is quite frightening as it feels as if the vehicle is out of control."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-250 XLT 6.2-L V8)

"experienced death wobble condition from front-end that was repaired via a tech bulletin"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)

"Had a case of death wobble . Dealer had truck for 3 days. suposidly now fixed."

Jim Y., SC (2017 Ford F-250 XLT 6.2-L V8)

"Bumps in the road caused a major vibration in the front end. Ford fixed it under warrantee. They said they weren't supposed use the term death rattle but that is what is was. They knew all about the problem. They also recommended an aftermarket part for a permanent fix. I thought they should have installed the after market part for free. Clearly there is a defect with the suspension of this vehicle."

Donny B., CO (2017 Ford F-250 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Tie rods

"Problem happened one time. Front end shook violently when rough spot encountered in highway. Problem repaired under warranty as soon as I took truck to dealership."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"There are 3 cameras, all of which have had to be replaced. The back up camera has been replaced twice already."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Display screen freezes up

"The display screen sometimes will not let us choose another pre-set radio station, sometimes will not let us use navigation or navigation will not work properly."

Shirli H., NC (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"After some use, the navigation system completely goes haywire and you are unable to select preset audio station."

Shirli H., NC (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Display screen goes blank

"it started 6-8 months ago, it happened intermittently. The Ford dealership said it was related to the electronics in the front passenger seat because the electronics go through the seat. The dealership fixed the problem."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.7-L V8 diesel)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"it started 6-8 months ago intermittently, and was related to the electronics in the front passenger seat. The dealership fixed the problem."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"When using the navigation system, it would eventually show us far away from where we actually were. When this happens you are unable to use the screen at all."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"It freezes up and does not navigate - leaving a message in the driver's information window - can't open any other system to be seen by the driver."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Radio

"I am having a variety of electronic issues. With the radio, it changes by itself when the vehicle is turned off. So if I am listening to XM radio and leave, when I turn the truck on, it almost always goes to AM radio. The radio also becomes unresponsive and has to be rebooted. When I ask the vehicle with Apple car play to call my wife, half the time it asks which number (cell/home) and the other half it just dials the cell. If I drive for more than 45 minutes, tow/haul mode always turns on. For a while the auto lights stopped working, and I had to manually turn the lights on and off. Then they started working again with no issues. The rear passenger side window clunks when you open it."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)
Steering wheel controls

"Whenever I drive for more than 45 minutes, the tow/haul mode turns on by itself. I simply turn it off and wait for it to come back."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water was leaking from the roof control panel or the cab lights. It would accumulate in the front console, about 1/2 inch in depth. Usually happened during heavy downpours, but not always."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"Left door seals have air leakage, don't seal properly. As well.... both vehicles have had mouse/squirrel issues due to lack of seals to ventilation system or vehicle interior!!! Huge issue with both 2014 and 2017 Fords!!"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)
Squeaks or rattles

"Have taken the truck in 2 times in the last 3 months to fix rattling in the driver's side frame. Some is caused by cheap weather stripping installed at the factory and some is caused by loose parts. It still rattles."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"This rattle was on the driver side door and involved the hinge. The rattle was very loud and occasionally the door would snap when opened. It took months for us to be able to replicate the sound for the dealership and ended up being the hinge was defective. When getting the vehicle repaired, the door was taken off the hinge and subsequently swung open too far and dented the vehicle, requiring another trip to the dealership for repairs. Very frustrating that even videotaping the noise/rattle was not sufficient to initiate repairs. It took over 5 attempts at booking an appointment for service before we could replicate the noise for a tech to hear."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"Rattles have began to develop as the vehicle ages."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Ford F-250 XLT 6.2-L V8)

"The driver's side door had a most annoyingly loud rattle that took several trips to the dealership. The rattle was hard to recreate but it was finally diagnosed as a faulty door hinge. This rattle took 5 trips to the dealership, each involving dropping the truck off for several hours only to be told that the mechanic wasn't able to reproduce the problem. We were finally able to video tape the noise and then also it rattled during the last visit with the mechanic. During the repair, the mechanic managed to damage the outer front panel of the truck with the truck door. That repair also required a separate appointment. All in all about 8-10 hours of lost work. Very frustrating."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.7-L V8 diesel)

"seat heater on driver side failed to work.repair was made by authorized Ford dealership service department. within 6 mo. the seat heater has failed again."

Anonymous, LA (2017 Ford F-250 King Ranch 6.7-L V8 diesel)
Warning lights

"There is a module failure affecting cruise control that occurs after certain turns with a trailer plugged in. Ford and dealer unable to replicate, therefore unable to repair. Resets with complete off/on of vehicle, requiring driver door open and close. I also had problems with the driver seat control not matching between the screen controller and the physical button on the side of the seat. A software update "seems" to have made this problem go away. Real problem with the dealership requiring this vehicle to be serviced on the commercial side, along with panel trucks and semi's. That department has no idea what all of the electronic components are about. Stupid mis-alignment of technicians problem there. Also, the vehicle has difficulty starting sometimes. Dealership cannot replicate so no fix. Occasionally just really struggles to get enough fuel or oxygen to run at high enough idle. Then it "catches" and runs fine from there on."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.2-L V8)

Fuel System

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford F-250 Platinum 6.2-L V8)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Although the emission sensor failed, the truck was still operational 100%. What caused me to take the truck in for repair was the check engine light."

Anonymous, (2017 Ford F-250 XLT 6.7-L V8 diesel)

Anonymous, OH (2017 Ford F-250 Lariat 6.2-L V8)

"Rubber bumpers on the tailgate keep falling off. They are attached to the frame of the side rails and the tailgate seats into them. Both sides are gone. Their lack does not seem to affect the performance of the tailgate."

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.
