SUVs and Trucks That Cost the Most to Gas Up

Even when gas prices are down, large vehicles with giant tanks can still cause pain at the pump. We see this play out with full-sized SUVs and trucks, as well as midsized SUVs that drink premium gas.

To understand what the costs are like today, we pulled together data from our fuel-economy tests and database, combined with national gas prices via AAA.

    more on fuel economy

With the current national average price of $2.93 a gallon for regular gasoline, three models from Consumer Reports’ tests cost just over $100 to fill their tanks from empty. The vehicles on this list all have large gas tanks capable of holding 21 to 36 gallons, and their fuel economy, based on CR’s tests, ranges from 16 to 21 mpg overall.

In fairness, some models have competitive fuel economy, but massive fuel tanks mean significant costs at the pump when filled from empty. For example, the Ford F-150 Hybrid made the list this year. Its 20 mpg overall is decent, and it has a massive 600-mile range, thanks to its 30.6-gallon tank. But fill-ups can require a truckload of cash.

These extreme examples show the maximum costs for fill-ups. Your actual costs may be higher or lower depending on your location and will vary as gas prices fluctuate. Right now, the prices are lower than they’ve been in recent years.

When buying a vehicle, consider the impact on operating costs if gas prices rise by a dollar or more once again. This includes being aware of whether the vehicle requires premium gas, which adds almost a dollar a gallon, a penalty that pushed the Jeep Grand Wagoneer near the top of this list and led to the inclusion of several midsized luxury SUVs rather than full-sized models like the Ford Expedition and Ram 1500.

But no matter what you drive, there are ways to improve fuel economy and save at the pump.

The vehicles below are ranked in order of cost to fill the gas tank from empty, based on popular configurations purchased for testing, starting with the most expensive.

    Key Gas-Saving Tips

    • Gas cards may be tempting for the discounts, but a regular cash-back card might save you more.
    • Shop around for the best deal at the pump. Using an app like GasBuddy can save you money.
    • You can also find lower prices if you buy discounted gas at Costco, Sam’s Club, or BJ’s Warehouse.
    • Obey speed limits and drive smoothly. That can make a measurable difference in fuel economy for many vehicles.
