Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Stefanos P., PA (2007 Honda Civic 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Body metal is very light, and seams are held together with plastic grommets which pop out too easily. The suspension is tried by a Chicago winter"

Anonymous, IL (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The large rubbery piece underneath the front of the car came loose; cheap plastic "bolts" broke. Drug for miles & ripped apart. Replaced. Bolts have broken again. Rubber trim around windshield came loose & part is now missing on driver side"

Anonymous, TX (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Front bumper ends keep flapping loose. Temporary fixes are costly and inadequate"

Anonymous, NC (2007 Honda Civic)

"Paint under driver-side door jam has worn away"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The bottom plastic liner fell off. Also, at one point I hit a cement parking block and the front fell off. This is why I will buy a car that is higher off the ground the next time around"

Barbara H., CA (2007 Honda Civic Hybrid 1.3-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"My car is now 8 years old, so I should expect to have problems now and then. The front left bumper, different material than the rest of the car, has broken it's clips and it hanging down about 3/4ths of an inch"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Honda Civic Si)

"Rubber molding is coming off front window"

Anonymous, FL (2007 Honda Civic)

"Low front bumper causes me to hit things like LOW parking cement strips which in turn causes front bumper to have broken away from car"

Anonymous, WA (2007 Honda Civic EX)

"interior panel covering driving side seat belt has popped out on its own and can't seem to get it to fit properly"

Rafiq R., ON (2007 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The sun visors for this model are defective and wear out in about 2 years of light use. Then they simply cannot be folded up completely and hang down partially sometimes obstructing your view or drop down suddenly. Honda has known about the problem for years but has never fixed the problem. The cost to replace one (1) is around $150 including parts and labor"

Keith W., CA (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The sun visors in this car have broken repeatedly. They actually "tear" in the heat. The plastic becomes soft and when you move them into place, the pressure from the spring in the visor, causes the visor to tear and no longer stay in place. The visor can drop in front of your vision without notice, This item is a safety issue that should have led to a recall not an extension of the warranty"

Dan T., CA (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"This is a common problem with Hondas that you can see on just about any drive around town. I believe that the manufacturer attributes it to non-Honda window cleaner in the window washer and the pattern of damage/decay would point to that. However, I did not put anything in the window washer (but bought it used five years ago; problem started last year) and Honda has had literally decades to remedy the problem (it is common on Hondas and I do not notice it on so much on any other makes). I have owned four other Hondas and this is the first one I have had to experience the problem."

Anonymous, AL (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The entire roof where the sunroof is located it peeling. It looks awful. We will not buy another Honda. Honda would not take responsibility!"

Anonymous, WA (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda extended warranty an extra 24 months. Paint on roof and trunk started to fade a few months after that expired."

Robt F., CA (2007 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Peeling clear coat off body panels."

Rafiq R., ON (2007 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Because I missed the recall deadline for this issue a couple of years ago, the clear coat has peeled off, leaving the car's roof looking like it has male-pattern baldness (specifically, receding from the front on the sides)"

Anonymous, ON (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Fading, chipping paint on trunk and top of car"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, FL (2007 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Roof, front and back peeling. Honda refuse to paint. Driving as is to advertise Honda bad paint. Unreliable paint work!"

Josette H., ON (2007 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint on roof peeling probably sun damage"

Anonymous, WI (2007 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint on the top of the car is fading and has these strange white lines in it."

Bobby O., TN (2007 Honda Civic)

"I guess this is a common problem in the 2007 Civics as I now know.Car looks terrible with white spots all over it and I can't afford to repair it and the car is worthless in this condition."

Anonymous, OR (2007 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Paint was badly fading starting in 2010 or so on the hood, roof and trunk. In 2012 I was advised there had been a problem with the paint process when the car was made and Honda would pay to have it repainted. They only did the areas that were currently fading. In 2019 other areas started showing the same breakdown of the clear coat. I complained to Honda that they should have repainted the entire vehicle back in 2012 since it all had the bad clear coat but only the areas hit directly by the sun showed the problem back then. They reviewed the case and came back and said they would not pay to have the new faded areas repainted which were the tops of the door. I told them that would be fine and when the time came to buy a new vehicle I will go back to having a Toyota."

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Cylinder head started leaking antifreeze. After replacing water pump myself and finding that that was not the problem, brought to dealer and they said there was a factory recall because the head leaks. They put a new cylinder head, timing belt for free but charged me for a new water pump since they said the warranty would not be any good if I kept the 1 month old water pump that I had bought from the dealer. Engine ran well after that but now leaks oil."

Carl H., CA (2007 Honda Civic)

"Repaired at no cost, had a recall replacement"

Engine rebuild or replacement

"I experienced the problem outlined here - https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/03 /free-engine-replacement-for-2006-2009-honda-civics /index.htm Unfortunately I was past the 10 year warranty period, so I had to decide to replace the vehicle or purchase a new engine. The engine would have been $4500 and they offered assistance of $1500 - so I paid $3000 to replace the engine, because otherwise I've maintained the vehicle well and it has experienced few problems."

Anonymous, WI (2007 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C stopped working on Thursday and I had a cross country trip planed to start Monday. On Friday going to the OCALA, FL dealer the engine quit. I called AAA and they took the car to the dealer who said the block was cracked and the head was ruined. I said I had to have the car by Monday as I was caring the parts for the MG Car Club cross country trip. The dealer said We will try. On Saturday I received a call saying the car was ready to go cross country!!! I took my checkbook, credit card, and some cash because they had not told me the cost of repairs. There were 3 pages of new items for the engine. The TOTAL COST was $0.00!!!! By the way... The car had 132,000 miles on it when this happened. This Honda now has 290,948 miles on it and I LOVE it!!! At 93,000 miles, the timing chain stretched or otherwise caused the valves to hit the pistons destroying the engine. Honda refused to assist in the cost of repairs which exceeds the value of the car. Display screen freezes up

"The electrical system is this car is just baffling. I don't know if the person who owned it before me just tampered with a lot of it and never put it back the way it was, or if it's just bad luck, but for some reason the audio system is tied to the acceleration of the vehicle. For instance, if I accelerate, the audio system is likely to short out and won't turn back on until I turn the car off and then back on. It also randomly switches from AUX to FM radio, and AM radio seemingly at random while I drive. Sometimes, the volume will randomly increase and decrease as well. The system is basically unusable, especially on long trips."
