This mini-SUV is based roughly on Honda's fine Civic sedan platform. Its all-wheel-drive system is good for bad weather but isn't meant for serious off-roading (there's no low-range gearing). The ride is compliant and carlike, but handling is just OK. The engine is fairly noisy, and acceleration is less than sizzling. What's more, some controls are awkwardly placed. While the seats are reasonably comfortable, a steering wheel that's too horizontal makes the driving position tiring. The rear seat is roomy, but the rear tailgate is a nuisance to operate. Although still a good choice as an overall package, we prefer the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester.
