Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Fluid had to be recharged. Worked for the most part but won’t know again until warmer weather"

Kenneth M., MA (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The clutch that engages the ac compressor was warn out and didn't allow consistent operation of the ac, of course in the stretch of many consecutive 90 degree days. The dealer repairs missed the problem despite there being a manufacturers bulletin on it and required a second visit to get it fixed. It was very expensive also. But it works great now."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Burnt out. Had to be replaced."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Honda CR-V 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"THE COMPRESSOR DIED AFTER ABOUT 85,000 MILES WHICH I UNDERSTAND IS ABOUT NORMAL"

Paul H., NY (2010 Honda CR-V 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C compressor intermittenly would work"

Willie W., PA (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"AC Stopped blowing cold intermittently. I was told that this was due to the AC compressor and was a very common issue with my CR-V. Compressor replaced. No further issues since the repair"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I went in for repair, because the a/c wasn't working and it was a relay, but it caused other problems."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda refused to replace the A/C compressor even though it was on a service bulletin."

James V., NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The AC stopped working completely. When I took it to be repaired I was told this was a common issue with my year model."

Jeannette K., (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C died and had to be replaced at more than $1000 cost"

Anonymous, NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I had no AC and needed a new compressor"

Jerry M., NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C stopped working. I had to have the compressor replaced."

Thomas H., OH (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced compressor and system about 12 months ago. recently the car has been experiencing problems with the air being cold, then moving to warm and moving back to cold again. Mechanic has seen it 3 times. First two worked on replacing valves and refrigerant. last time - needed to replace lines. I refused."

Donna H., FL (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"compressor quit needed replacement. nine year old car seems about right"

Anonymous, MI (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Compressor went out and A/C no longer worked"

Gregory C., OH (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It quit on the hottest weekend of the year. Had to take it to the shop twice to get it fixed, which probably says more about the shop I chose rather than about the car itself"

Rebecca M., (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"$2,000.00 plus repair"

Joe B., WI (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The a/c compressor died on an extremely hot day. Was told this was not unusual for CR-Vs"

Anonymous, IA (2010 Honda CR-V LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Horrible vibrations building up over only a few minutes driving. When we pulled into the service bay, they were sure it was the engine and told me I should have had the car towed. In the end it was just the A/C and didn't hurt the rest of the car. Still unexpected in a Honda so early."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Honda CR-V 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The AC system works fine when the car accelerates, however it does not blue cool air in neutral. This has always been an issue"

Anonymous, AZ (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"AC began blowing hot air about two years ago. Dealer recommended clutch and coil replacement but we couldn't afford the fix at the time. We went without AC for the summer of 2018 and returned to the dealer in Spring 2019 for the fix. However, the fix was much more complex. After replacing clutch and coil, AC continued to blow hot air. Dealer then recommended compressor replacement because they found excessive amounts of charcoal buildup int the receiver/dryer filter. Internal combustion of compressor unit caused contamination, which led to the need to remove and clean all lines as well as replacing the receiver/dryer filter and the the expansion valve behind the dashboard. The fixed the issue after 6 days without use of the car."

Anonymous, CT (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda knew about an issue with the A/C compressor but did not fix the problem even though there was a service bulletin."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I've seen this referred to as the "Black Death" of AC failures. Once the AC compressors goes, it must be replaced multiple times to the point that it's more cost efficient to trade in the vehicle. It's a serious issue as the compressor belt is connected to the transmission. While the heat will continue to work in winter, the AC will not blow cold which is uncomfortable and the de-fog function does not work which is uncomfortable and potentially unsafe. Small particles of plastic clog the system and no amount of flushing or replacing the parts fixes it."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"the AC compressor failed and had to be replaced for the air conditioning unit to cool the vehicle"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Failed compressor. Once replaced every worked as before"

Anonymous, (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C stopped working. Mechanics cannot figure out why. Either a sensor is not working to activate the compressor clutch or the clutch itself is bad. A/C is not important where I live and because of other more serious problems with the engine, we gave up trying to determine the cause or incur expense to fix it."

Anonymous, MI (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Apparently there were design issues with the AC system for this year (and perhaps others- not sure). Problem occurred with high mileage on car but Honda covered the cost of all parts to repair without me having to ask"

Anonymous, MA (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"stopped working in July 2019 and was fixed by a Honda dealer within a few days. no problems before or after"

Anonymous, (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"This car has had an air conditioning problem for about 3 years now. Several mechanics looked at it, "diagnosed" the problem or misdiagnosed it. It's been erratic and frustrating, but I think we're good now. I'm hoping that the last time it was fixed, it was fixed for good, but this summer will tell the story on that."

Anonymous, NY (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"At first replacing a relay in the fuse box corrected the problem. This year the clutch fails to engage on the compressor. Fairly expensive part and labor."

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I was using the AC and it stopped getting cold. I took it in on 5/29/19 and it was fixed. The compressor and condenser were replaced."

Anonymous, MD (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A strange warm muggy odor was coming from the vents and no cool air."

Anonymous, BC (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"With air conditioner turned on, heat would come on instead or just room temperature air blowing. This started randomly in late spring, but was constant by summer. I replaced the relay switch, but no go. And I could visually observe that the air conditioner clutch was not always engaging when the air was turned on. So had my private, reasonably priced, excellent auto shop make the repair. That was Spring/Summer 2018 and air conditioning still working fine."

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to have it replaced. Costly. It is a weak point on this car. We knew it when we bought it but considering the overall excellence of the car,we took the risk."

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"The only independant suspension vehicle manufactures that does not have camber adjustment on rear suspension which creates excessive wear on inside edge of rear tires. Honda offers no solution"

Loren V., IL (2010 Honda CR-V EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The engineer that designed the rear suspension should be fired,. There is no camber adjustment possible on independent suspension on the rear causing cupping on the inside edges of tires. No amount of rotation will prevent it and it causes extreme noise in the car. How anyone can put rears independent suspension on a car with NO CAMBER AJUSTMENT if just plain STUPID"

Ball joints

"The ball joints for the Honda CRV looked to be more suited for a lighter car than an SUV. They should have held up since the vehicle is not driven off road at all. I suspect that if you took a look at newer models you would see a continuance of the degradation of suspension as costs are being cut."

"Paint and trim fading and peeling from middle area of vehicle (from about where the bottoms of the windows are located) all the way up to the roof of the car. Also, the interior "leather" is tearing in multiple locations within the car, including the sides of the front driver and passenger seats, front middle armrests and door armrests, and other locations on the doors and seats. The problem started within the first three years I owned the vehicle and it continues to get worse over time. The leather interior is tearing in multiple places within the car, even in locations where the driver and passengers rarely come in contact with the leather. Although it cost significantly more to upgrade to leather interior, it is NOT real leather and with the exception of some parts of the seats, the fake leather is almost paper-thin (about the same thickness as a large garbage bag). The problem has yet to be resolved as I have not been able to find anyone locally to repair the seats and cannot afford to have a new paint job to repair the fading and peeling that is occurring on the upper half of the doors and roof. The car was even garage kept for the first 6 years I owned it."

Engine rebuild or replacement

This car was not covered and Honda was vague about why., It may have been because of facility where it was assembled. Dealer was not aware of situation because problem was reported via service bulletin, not recall or special notice. Traction control

"I find the traction control too sensitive; at times in winter weather the rear brakes are so hot I can smell them from inside. I suspect the premature caliber wear may be connected to this."

Anonymous, BC (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transfer case

"Input bushing and seal failure. Dealer had to order parts and schedule repair once parts were received."

Anonymous, VT (2010 Honda CR-V EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say
