The Element is an offbeat utility vehicle with plenty of interior space. But it seats only four, the low weight-carrying capacity limits its utility and large roof pillars compromise outward visibility. Interior noise is pronounced and the ride is stiff and jittery. Handling is fairly nimble, but in emergency maneuvers, the tail tends to slide out, even with stability control.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2007 Honda Element owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

    What Owners Say

    Calipers

"Rear passenger side was frozen and had to be replaced."

Ronald R., OH (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Due to rust, only with rear brakes, the pads freeze up and everything needs replacing.$400.00 Three times so far, in 88000 miles"

Anonymous, CT (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Second caliper to lock up and create serious overheating"

Ronald R., OH (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Normal routine brake wear

"My car is relatively heavy, is considered a truck so the weight contributes to break wear. The weight also affects the gas mileage, which is not great. Other than that, I, like most Element owners, absolutely love my car and am saddened that they not longer make it."

Anonymous, CT (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

    "Brake back plate issues"

Mike G., FL (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

    "constant problems with rear brakes"

Anonymous, PA (2007 Honda Element 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to do rear brake pads, rotors and calipers. Preventable maintenance."

Anonymous, (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Premature brake wear

"I've had to replace the brakes on this vehicle, alternating front and back, every year since i got it. It seems excessive to me to have to replace brakes every 2 years. I don't ride the brake, and I don't brake short or hard. Not sure why this is"

Sandra F., OH (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I live near the ocean and the calipers and rotors have been replaced a few times because of rust (most recently in the last 2 years). It's not a safety issue just an annoyance that they need to be replaced so frequently."

Anonymous, FL (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Premature brake wear on rear brakes and calipers due to calipers not releasing. Replaced LR calipers x1 and RR calipers x2, before problem traced to corrosion in rear brake lines. Problem finally (?) solved when rear break lines replaced."

Brian M., MO (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"We've had brake work twice in the 43,000 miles we've had the car."

Gregory G., VT (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Regular brake failure

"Brake pads fail by 12000 miles. Tried many different brands."

Anonymous, MI (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Rotors

"D/t vision I'm hard on my brakes being nearsighted"

Anonymous, (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Squeaking

"Brakes continue to make noise even after repairs."

Ronald R., OH (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

    "Brake back plate"

Mike G., FL (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, PA (2007 Honda Element SC 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The short life for ball joints in the Element are likely related to road salt on Vermont roads during the winter months."

Gregory G., VT (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Bushings

"I have replaced the rear stabilizer bushings 3 time I the past 30k miles"

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Honda Element SC 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The air compressor gave out at 174,000 miles. It is used extensively, so I do not consider that a defect. Things wear out."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Honda Element EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
    Warning lights

"Check Engine Light came on. I got to the shop a few days later but the light turned off the night before. They had a hard time getting their computer to talk to the Element computer. Eventually they told me it was a code that could be several things, but was likely indicating a thermostat issue (being stuck open) - however I had no indication of the engine temp running low nor high - it was as steady as ever according to the gauge. I haven't repaired anything since the light went off (and the cost to replace the thermostat was higher than I expected). I have had no problems or performance issues that indicate this issue was anything other than a glitch at this time."

Anonymous, TX (2007 Honda Element LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Problem was intermittent and service shops were not able to diagnose a specific problem. After one month the problem has subsided. Lost one week of operation of vehicle while it was in shop. Most likely problem was related to Honda dealer airbag replacement and electronics"

"Engine has variable valve timing. Mechanism that shifts from one set of camshaft lobes to the other failed to work. Engine performed poorly. Dealer was able to fix quickly. Cost a few hundred dollars, though."
