The redesigned Odyssey topped our minivan ratings, although this iteration of the Odyssey traded away some of the previous generation's crisp handling qualities for a more comfortable ride. The cabin is noticeably quieter too, although some road noise persists. The jazzier exterior styling reduced cargo space by a smidgen, but rear seating is generous and easy to access.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

One significant flaw the unimpressive grip, which limits handling in emergency situations. While ultimately secure, Odyssey gives up early when pushed to its limits. A rear-view camera is standard on all trim lines.

Rotors

"rotors are not properly designed by engineers, should last longer before they wear out and/or warp."

Anonymous, AL (2011 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"The brakes on the Ody seem to get warped easily. There have been times when they were so warped that it felt unsafe to drive. We take it in the dealer, and they tell us it's normal wear for a heavy vehicle, and imply that we must be stomping on the breaks. We aren't. We finally got them replaced at a outside shop and it's been fine."

Anonymous, OR (2011 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, CA (2011 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"At 42000 Km the rotors, front and back, became warped. I do not tow a trailer, ride the brakes or live in a hilly area. Honda said it was how the vehicle was driven, not warrantee, I have never had this problem with any other vehicle I've owned"

"When the brakes get heated I get a pulsation in the brake pedal"

Ira S., FL (2011 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"As is typical, the OEM Honda rotors warped early and provided poor braking performance. I replaced them high end aftermarket pieces. They are much better now"

Nathan S., NY (2011 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The rotors have been "turned" on a few occasions and have been replaced twice in the last 20,000 miles. One garage suggested we drove through standing water while exiting a freeway, thus warping the hot rotors. I do not accept that"

M H., FL (2011 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"When brakes are applied, it causes shaking on the steering column. Taken it for service and they found nothing. It continues to shake"

Thomas K., NE (2011 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors need to be redesigned"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The rotors that come with the 2011 Odyssey does not include enough holes to accommodate heating. Hence, constant shimmy was unbearable especially down a mountain. The dealer replaced it once with no charge, but soon after the shimmy came back. I was told that was the nature of the rotors. When I couldn't take it anymore I brought it back to the dealership to state there must be something they could do about it. They said they could install an upgrade, but it was going to cost $600 plus tax"

Have owned Hondas since 1988 & it's overall been a superior product - but this dashboard display is pathetic & far from user friendly - In daylight, the readouts cannot be read i.e., AC & Heating readout & control buttons are unreadable (one has to use a driving hand to shield competing daylight to read info, hence risk - using more time to see the readout instead of being able to just glance, hence more risk) also, mississippi law states when driving in rain, headlights must be on which dims the entire dash light display rendering them unreadable. The problem is ongoing. This goes beyond an issue of convenience and is more seriously a persistent 'SAFETY' issue"

Engine Major

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"rear engine piston seals leaking and had to be replace cost about 3700"

Youngs C., VA (2011 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"Driving from Pennsylvania to Florida, the check engine light came on. We pulled over and adjusted gas cap. The light went off. 2 hours later light cam back on and car stalled. We were able to get it started again, but light stayed on. Drove 4 more hours to destination and parked the car. It would not restart next day. Had it towed to Honda dealership and they said the cylinder system was damaged because of the fuel efficiency system that shuts off cylinders during highway driving. They said it was covered under warranty. Fixed it and did software update. After software update, the can went from getting 18 city and 24-26 highway to 18 everywhere."

Steven F., PA (2011 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Honda had problems with the engine rings failing in its 6 cylinder engines that had the variable cylinder management system. There was a class action law suit that was settled giving owners an unlimited mileage warranty for 8 years from date of in service for vehicles from 2009 until 2015 (dates uncertain). The rings failed in the Odyssey leading to large oil consumption and the rings were replaced in cylinders one to four under warranty. I feel like this was a secret warranty as I was not aware of it until I took the car into a dealer for a check engine light. At that time I was on an extended trip and the dealer replaced a spark plug, gave me paper work and told me to have my home dealer take care of the issue. When I took it in to the home dealer they started to give me problems about whether it was covered but the paper work and the un-reset computer code resolved the issue. It took 2 weeks for the engine to be repaired."

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The rubber bellows tube connecting the air filter housing and the throttle body developed a crack. The crack caused extra air to enter the throttle body and cause rough idle and stalling. The tube was only $30 but I had to diagnose myself. The dealer chased error codes and thought the EGR valve was faulty. At home I looked under the hood and found the crack as soon as I shined a light on the engine. It has been running fine ever since I replaced the rubber bellows tube."

The vehicle even does this 'shift' going down a straight level highway with cruise control on. Recently had transmission fluid drained and replaced without benefit. The Honda dealer completed a CAMPAIGN repairing cracked piston rings, cylinder walls scoring, spark plug failures, etc. and other related issues - N.B. they were adamant about my NOT using the term RECALL when I referred to the problem as such during our conversation. Don't know what's happening with HONDA, but their ENGINE integrity, I always thought, was one of their strong suits, separating them 'head & shoulders' above almost all others. To Honda's credit, they picked up their bill portion of about 6000.00 AND also to their credit, I was able to save on the labor when I had them address other replacement and repair items - we paid about 3000.00 fo what would've included another 2000."
