Although the previous Pilot was previously considered a Top Pick in this category, we were disappointed with this model. It lost ground on interior fit and finish, as well as braking. Road noise remains omnipresent and the center console is crowded. That said, the Pilot is a very functional vehicle. Fuel economy is improved by one mpg overall, it still seats eight, and it drives pretty well.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Vehicle steering pulled first to left-tires switched and vehicle pulled right-alignment performed vehicle still pulls-dealer says it is the tires-problem gradually decreasing as tires wear"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Had to replace rear suspension component in order to get the car aligned"

Anonymous, NE (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, CA (2011 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Bushings

"developed rattle left front, replaced bad shock. also checked found front bushing leaking /split open, worn prematurely. replaced under warranty. 40,000 miles on car"

John H., TX (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"# months after the warranty expired, it was in for routine oil change (to the same dealership as always) and I am suddenly told the bushings need to be replaced. Seems too early in its life and seems weird it wasn't noticed while under warranty"

Mark R., CO (2011 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"front lower control arm bushings are deteriorating. This is apparently a problem with many Hondas 2009-2012 due to a new hydraulic part. They have since discontinued making the part and when repaired, a new non-hydraulic part was placed. But no r"

"Suspension is noisy when going over speed pumps on the road or in parking lots"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Leak in the bushings, it was a recalled item as well, apparently. I had an extended warranty as well, so I did not pay for the repair"

Anonymous, LA (2011 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"Honda Technical Service bulletin S/B 15-045, 2009–14 Front Suspension Rear Lower Arm Bushing. Vehicles covered under this bulletin will have the warranty on the compliance bushing extended to 7 years from the original date of purchase or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Unfortunately, this was discovered during a state safety inspection at the dealer and slightly outside the window of the TSB, which was a $900 repair. If the problem is such that the vehicle can't pass a safety inspection, and it is on multiple vehicles/years, it probably should be a NHTSA recall."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"bushings replaced in recall, but done incorrectly by the dealer. Had to be re-done several months later."

Anonymous, TN (2011 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, MA (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The power steering was bad right away; it was unusually difficult to turn the wheel. But the salesperson dealer said it was "normal" and we believed him. It started leaking after about one year and the dealer eventually replaced the unit"

Joseph L., IL (2011 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"Power steering noise when turning left and right."

Paulette D., NC (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"Power steering pump failure, idler bearing failure. All maintenance recommendations were followed, properly on the changing of the fluid. Overall disappointed that those two items could fail at 105,000 miles. I thought Honda's were built better than that."

Anonymous, OK (2011 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"Shocks are leaking after 5 years of driving on very smooth, flat, pothole-free roads in South Florida"

Anonymous, MD (2011 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

John F., KS (2011 Honda Pilot 3.5-L V6)

"leaking rear shock"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The front struts began making loud noises which were able to be felt through the brake and acceleration pedals while the noise was being produced. We replaced the axel/CV assemblies on both sides which eliminated the extremely loud noises while turning. Other noises began to emanate from the same area. There are over 150 parts in the front end. My shop said it was road worthy and to drive and see if it got any worse. It did and then the weather changed and the temps went into the mid-80's. The noise then stopped. It has been almost three weeks since the noise stopped and no reoccurrence of the noises. While I'm grateful for it not costing me more money, there has to exist a design insufficiency which allows the lubrication to not be where it should be to avoid such issues. We keep our vehicles is excellent running order and keep them garaged and attractive. This does not diminish my loyalty to Honda. It just increases my annoyance levels!"

Jim G., GA (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"Bushings at the tips"

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

James A., MA (2011 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"The steering system intermediate half shaft required replacement which was a very expensive repair"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Steering wheel vibration

"After the last service the brakes make an odd noise and the car vibrates like crazy when brakes are pressed hard for a quick stop"

Ronald S., WA (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"High speed the steering wheel shimmys. When you hit a bump at high speed, it feels like you could lose control"

Anonymous, CO (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Above 70mph the steering starts vibrating. I replaced all 4 tires and had them balanced using state of the art equipment. Also replaced all rotors, pads, bushings and had a precise alignment done. It helped somewhat but it still has the vibration problem above 70mph. Honda said it's normal and we had to live with it"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"the right front get a minor vibration at speeds above 75 mph. I have replace the bushing, the bearings, the brake caliber and pads, the tires and balance, and all wheel alignment. All of these things helped, but I still have the problem and Honda said its normal"

"The breaks had to get replaced after only 3 years, my previous Pilot never had any break problems, and I had it for 7 years!"

Anonymous, TX (2011 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"At approx 18,000 miles we were experiencing a wobble when braking. We were told by the dealer we needed new rotors. The brake pads were fine (barely worn) so how does a rotor wear down within 20,000 miles before the first set of brake pads is worn do"
