Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

While this version of the Pilot shows its age, the basic blueprint still provides plenty of space and convenient functionality within a comparatively small package. Driving dynamics are sound with a steady, supple and controlled ride complementing responsive handling. The engine and transmission also operate very smoothly.

On the other hand, at 18 mpg overall, fuel economy could be better, partly due to the automatic transmission having just five gears. Handling is untidy and sloppy at the limits. Braking performance is also mediocre. While the powertrain is smooth and refined, acceleration is middling. Pronounced road noise also makes this Honda a very loud vehicle. Interior furnishings are blatantly low-rent and festooned with cheap, hard plastics. Modern luxury amenities are sparse, something of a testimony to the time when this version of the Pilot hit the market back in 2008. A rear-view camera is standard on all trim lines, but other modern high-tech safety gear like forward-collision warning or blind spot monitoring is conspicuously absent. Further, this version of the Pilot scored a Poor in the IIHS small-overlap crash test.

Anonymous, SC (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Piston rings design issue causing ring gaps to align allowing excessive oil into the combustion zone causing plug and sensor fouling and allowing combustion byproducts into piston rod and crank shaft area fouling oil. engine disassembly required to clean generally and to replace rings with preventative design"

Donald F., FL (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Head gasket

"Issues I had were all covered by Honda under an extended warranty"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Periodically when shifting from neutral to drive the whole car shudders when put in gear"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The vehicle up shifts to soon under normal acceleration causing a transmission shutter/surge. The torque convertor does not lock up until the vehicle reaches over 65 mph"

Anonymous, TN (2013 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"The car sometimes does not shift smoothly from neutral to drive"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission would not change gears (upshift) when you let off the gas. If you were driving 40 MPH you were in 3 or 4 gear and doing 3000 rpm. At 65 mph, you were in top gear and only doing 2800 rpm. Took 3 trips to convince dealer of a problem"

Gaylord D., MO (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Took the Pilot to dealer with less than 10,000 miles on it. They "updated the software". It still shifts funkey unless you put your foot into it"

James V., FL (2013 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Transmission leaks

"Fluid was under Car, but Dealer Service tech could find no leak?"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

"Engine hesitates on acceleration"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Dealer reprogrammed computer chip engine timing as spark plugs were fouling due to vacuum created in eco mode sucking engine oil by the piston rings"

Mike P., ME (2013 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"sounds like a pinging, but happens only when lightly loaded and shifting and/or changing from 6 to 4 or 3 cyl operation"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Engine pings and knocks as engine stops and starts using 2 or 3 cylinders. Vibration in steering wheel. Worse in winter than in summer, but never absent"

Anonymous, PA (2013 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"Engine mounts do not sufficiently dampen engine vibration caused by unbalanced cylinder firing order resulting in steering wheel/chassis vibration and cabin noise"

Trevor M., AB (2013 Honda Pilot)

Power Equipment

Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system

What Owners Say

Engine harness

"Economy mode shuts down two, then three cylinders resulting in engine/steering wheel/chassis vibration and cabin noise"

Trevor M., AB (2013 Honda Pilot)
Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"Battery went dead less than one year after Honda installed a replacement. They did pro-rate the battery that was installed"

Anonymous, SC (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Repeatedly, the Emission sensor light has gone on in the car. After going back to the dealer at least five times, it was determined that there was a slight crack in the cellanoid"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)
Fuel cap

"As part of the issue with the EGR, there were repeated times in which the message, "Check fuel cap" appeared on the dashboard"

Anonymous, NY (2013 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

"Has quite work numerous times"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Heater system

"When it's very cold outside (midwest) the heating system doesn't heat sufficiently and you don't feel warm unless you put on the heated seats"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

Exhaust
