At one time, driving a Honda Pilot meant that driving dynamics, family friendliness, and powertrain refinement were more important to you than the macho, trucklike SUV look. The Pilot was a natural next step for Civic and Accord owners with growing families. But something went awry in the late-2000s. Honda changed tack, making the Pilot more trucky and cheap-feeling.

Anonymous, MO (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Difficult to set up and is sometimes intermittent"

Anonymous, MD (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The Hands Free Link system Honda uses as a subcomponent has a horrible interface, and does not play nicely with Android. Specifically, the latest Samsung Galaxy has never been supported. If I'd known this, I never would have purchased the vehicle. Bluetooth activities like hands-free dialing do not work, texts cannot be read or responded to via voice, and I am back to having to pull over to dial if I need to make an urgent call. When I am able to get the vehicle to recognize my phone & set up speed dial, it will forget it again within a few weeks and I have to spend ~20 minutes setting it up again. Speed-dial is the ONLY way to use your phone hands-free unless you activate Android Auto and use Android Auto to do voice features."

Lora F., CA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Very frustrating! Cannot seem to keep devised connected."

Richard G., MI (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Bluetooth pairing lost almost as quickly as it pairs. Difficult when driving and a call comes in or you have to make one."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"The entire "infotainment" system is ridiculously complex and very difficult to use. You simply cannot see the screen in daylight. The controls are all touchscreen, so you must squint and fumble with it while trying to drive. There are NO tactile buttons or knobs, so you must take your attention off the road to find another station or simply turn it on. I rate this system zero out of ten. Had I known these things before purchase, I would have looked elsewhere"

Phillip B., AL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"To correct the problem the complete radio/display unit was replaced."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Rear entertainment system (e.g., DVD player, rear screen)

"Will not play Blu-Ray DVDs. Begins showing previews and other messages, but stops when it reaches the feature presentation. Will not respond to touch screen commands. Will play non-Blu-Ray just fine."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"Every time I take my car to the dealer it seems they have software fixes to install. Sometimes they work well and sometimes they create more problems."

Dennis E., CA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"does not recognize my voice"

James F., NY (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Promised safety feature of hands-free dialing, etc. But voice commands don't work. Honda uses Hands Free Link as their vendor, and that vendor NEVER supports the latest Galaxy phone. Android users will have serious issues with basic functionality of hands free services. Unacceptable in this day and age."

Lora F., CA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water dripping from roof trim above rear hatch. Initially diagnosed as clogged sun roof drains which was not the cause. Eventually found poorly sealed body joints at each roof rail. Took several weeks to find and fix. Hounds provided a loaner car for entire time."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"It’s currently leaking water somewhere around the back hatch when I go through a car wash for past 2months.. Hasn’t happened with rain. Wet inside after car wash. I haven’t had time to take it to the dealer yet."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Mildew smell from the AC system"

David T., NC (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"This is the cause of rattling windows"

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The front doors must be to low at the tops and causing the weather striping not to cover and seal out the wind noise. Had it into the dealer 4 times and couldn't fix it. Not sure what to do about it."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Squeaks or rattles

"When windows are partially open they rattle."

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"After 12000 miles car sounded like a ten year old car. Many rattles."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Rattles and rear suspension noise. Finally traded in car"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"There is a strange noise being caused by some emission control component. Honda says it should not cause a problem, but a replacement would have to be scheduled because they don't have the part. I plan to have the part replaced, under warranty, because I do not trust that it is innocuous."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"took the vehicle back to the dealer and they knew exactly what the cause was. so after 15 minutes we were back on the road.. minus the noise…."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Windfoil on roof of car (just in front of sunroof) rattles loudly at highway speeds. Has been tightened twice, and we were told that if it happens again, they will just remove it."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"RATTLES FROM REAR AREA WHILE DRIVING"

Rodney B., FL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"back bumper makes a thumping noise when going over uneven road"

Kenneth S., PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The windows rattle when partially open. Honda says that's just the way it is. I will continue to complain."

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The engine makes significant noise that sounds like the valves need adjusting, although the vehicle only has 10,000 miles on it. This noise started after the dealer had the car for 2 weeks to fix an engine computer problem. They maintain that the noise is normal, but it wasn't there before the engine computer work and it doesn't sound normal."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"There is a rattling noise inside the rear passenger door. Also signs of rust appears on the speaker grill."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"The front windows rattle when partially open"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"Front Passengers channel needed to be replaced twice - still had wind noise after first channel was replaced"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Driver side door\window has excessive wind noise at highway speeds that was not present when purchased"

Pete T., FL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"There is wind noise when driving the vehicle. It doesn´t seem to seal completely."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"top of front doors weather striping doesn't cover/seal the gap between the top of the doors and the roof so I get wind noise at higher speeds or when the wind is blowing."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The 9 speed transmission that comes on the higher trim levels is a disappointment. Nothing but issues including poor shifting, poor controls (buttons instead of a lever), rough gear changing, slow gear shifting. I do not trust the transmission."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Step on the accelerator and the vehicle hesitates/will not move"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"AT 25-26 MPH and 32-33 MPH vehicle sometimes abruptly downshifts before shifting. Dealer unable to replicate so it hasn't been fixed"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Rough downshifting."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Shifting is rough going down through the gears when slowing. During low speeds and let up on the accelerator the transmission hesitates before it selects the gear."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The push button 9-speed transmission is governed by a computer program that does not smoothly shift up or down in lower gears causing a jerky shift that is betting annoying. Honda has promised a fix but withdrew offer with the explanation that the vehicle stills operates and until the transmission fails, they won't find a fix."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"when shifting down manually from gears below 5th it revs up before it down shifts. Also when first started in the morning it takes 2-3 second before the transmission engages very annoying and dangerous because it actually lurches!"

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"I generally don't have a problem with it. It only happens in city driving when it is super hot outside. Otherwise, it is very smooth and responsive for my driving."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"At the 40 mph point the transmission seizes, jerks, then jumps to meet the requested acceleration. Happens at both a slow accel and most dangerously, a fast accel on the highway. You can hear and feel the grind."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"After putting it in reverse and backing up some, the transmission does not seem to reconnect and slips when putting it in Drive. Also, gear shifting is rough while driving. Sometimes the car does not accelerate enough and other times too much. There is also a delay when climbing a hill and it has to drop down too many gears to climb.. Other times, it seems to stay in a lower gear too long raising the engine RPM."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Surging during normal acceleration. Found the cause in Honda online forum. Burnt transmission fluid. Honda service bulletin says to flush it several times and install a transmission software update. I flushed it myself and the problem is fixed. If Honda will update the software for free, I will have it done at my convenience."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I noticed transmission slipping at about 38000 miles. Reported to Honda and they said I had missed my transmission flush. Flushed, problem went away."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"The Pilot would stutter consistently, but thankfully was still under warranty. They flushed the transmission fluid several times and it solved the problem."

Susan P., PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"I've had this problem since purchase. One Honda mechanic at dealer told me to file a lemon law complaint. User groups tell of transmissions being replaced 3 times with no improvement. All management said it was "normal" and a function of my driving. I have taken the car in 3+ times. Only recently they told me there was a software update I would have to purchase...even though this has been a repeated, reported, investigated issue between myself and Penske Honda, Indianapolis. I'm not an idiot. I am female. A female electrical and industrial engineer who designed transmission software for heavy duty trucks, buses, tanks...eg the articulated buses. It's not my driving problem. Thanks for letting me vent. The Honda Pilot is not an SUV. It is a glorified minivan. They have taken out the SUV functions. I use this for light towing of boats, trailers. In no way can it handle a short trip with a horse trailer, which was fine with my 2009 Honda Pilot. We were nearly unable to pull a boat from the water/ramp on a hill in Branson, MO even when shifting to manual. Max speed 15-20 mph. I didn't think we would make it. This was easy, same boat, same ramp in the 2009 Pilot."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"The computer software was upgraded to prevent the transmission fluid from overheating, which caused premature aging and surging during shifting. Honda has a service bulletin for this issue and it was covered under the power train warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Transmission leaks

"Took 2 days to repair, but under warranty. Had to remove entire engine to replace seal that was leaking."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"I'm not sure if it's considered a sensor but one day the car shut off while driving it. Lost all power. Luckily I wasn't going too fast. Dealer said it was a switch on the transmission where the buttons are that needed to be replaced. Very scary."

Stephen B., NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"i think this may cause the problem i mentioned before in the horrible shifting"

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The AC system completely failed and the compressor had to be replaced."

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The AC compressor failed on our new 2017 Pilot. According to the dealer this was a factory defect, it never worked from the factory. They mentioned this is a problem with many new Honda Pilots."

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The a/c stopped cooling took it to the dealer and they had to recharge the system after only 6 months old."

Derrick R., MT (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"it was not cooling the car, nor heating it well"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"the A/C compressor completely failed on the vehicle."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Noises come from AC being on. Clicking sounds. Has not been fixed yet"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"A/C stopped working because of busted compressor. Dealer installed a new compressor."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"A/C controls are nearly as bad as the radio...overly complex, overly automatic. Give me on/off, a T-stat, and a fan control"

Phillip B., AL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Auto climate control runs continueously in recirculation feature"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Blower (fan) motor

"Bearing was bad...made a noise on low speed"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Evaporator

"There was a slow refrigerant leak in the evaporator core which was not corrected until my third visit. They just refilled the refrigerant the first two times."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"Ventilated seats do not work no air comes out. Taken back to the dealer and they said operating per specs because the seat fan is on . I complained to Honda USA because there is some kind of defect if no air comes out of the holes in the ventilated seats. They were very rude and just brushed it offsaying that if the dealer said it was working per spec there was nothing they could do. I know some of the ventilated seats in other Pilots work because the one we took for a test drive worked fine."

Edward K., PA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Heater system

"Heat to the feet is poor at best. If heat blows to the face, feet get very cold. Have to keep switching between face and feet to keep feet warm. Honda dealer said it is a known issue, but Honda says it's withing normal limits."

Lori L., MN (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"despite dealer service efforts, thermostat runs extremely hot (i.e., heater runs hot) for first 20 minutes or so of driving. One has to set temps at 61 degrees and it is still too hot."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"A major refrigerant hose developed a leak and was replaced twice."

Rod E., TX (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"A/C needed charging."

Anonymous, ND (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"According to dealer's service advisor, the leak was caused by the busted compressor. Just took his word on that."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Need to change the Catalyst Converter. The engine light came off twice in a period of 10 days while driving"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"A portion of the emissions system got wet and failed while launching my boat. This is an SUV and boat launching should be a typical activity. Dealer said no, owners fault and owner pays."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"Starting in December 2019, indicator 'Emissions Control Problem/Issue' on dash illuminated. Indicator remained lit for several days then went out. The amount of time it was lit varied from 2 weeks to 1 day and the amount of time between illuminations varied from several days to 3 weeks or more."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"INTERMITTENT "EMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEM" IS DISPLAYED, EVEN AFTER SYSTEM PROGRAMMING UPDATE AT DEALERSHIP."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Fuel cap

"The Pilot has a cap-less system. It froze without warning, I could not put gas in the car. In my opinion this feature is a solution to a problem no one has. Stay with the twist on cap."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Fuel injection system

"Engine warning light came on and we took it to the dealership."

Anonymous, ID (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"Check engine light came on. NAPA (my local repair shop) could not fix it and had to take it to the dealer. Only had a 36000 mile warranty and the car had 42000 miles on it. Dealer wanted $3000 to repair. After I went ballistic on then they knocked the price down to 1500 with Honda picking up half of that. Bottom line- all fuel injectors had to be replaced along with other components in the system."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"Check engine light came on w/ 34k mi on vehicle. Honda tech said it was common issue and to reload new software related to fuel injectors which Honda wouldn't cover even though the vehicle had less than 36k miles. Tech said I may need new injectors. At 38k check light came back on and tech said I had to install new injectors. Honda wouldn't cover even though the tech said it was a common issue. American Honda did give me a $200 voucher for use at a Honda dealer. Big deal. I've already put more money in my '17 Pilot than I ever did in my '08 Accord! I've purchased four Hondas but I suspect this will be my last due to the way I was treated."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The fuel system on this vehicle is problematic. We have an odor of fuel around the vehicle whenever it is driven, and have been tol this is normal. The fuel system faiuled completely and the vehicle would not run, Honda had to replace fuel injectors and other components. Honda tried to say wed had put bad gas in this, but we had the exact same problem with another 2017 that the dealer replaced with the same model as there were so many problems with the vehicle."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Check engine light for catalyst system. Fuel injectors replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Honda Service Bulletin 18-025 is for a 2016 model but the 2017 uses the same engine. Probable Cause: The injectors were installed improperly at the factory and/or contamination was introduced to the fuel system that is affecting the fuel flow. Honda still requires the customer to pay for this issue."

Anonymous, (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Fuel injectors has to be replaced under warranty at 50000 miles"

Anonymous, KS (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Fuel Injectors had to be replaced. This a common problem with that model year."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Engline light came on. My mechanic attached it to computer and got a "code." A service tech at local Honda dealer said code indicates "rear bank catalyst system efficiency below threshhold." He said it could be a problem with the O2 sensor. When he checked with another tech about cost of replacement, second tech said it may be a problem with the rear catalytic converter. So I don't know at this point what problem is."

Anonymous, AL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"I had had the Pilot for only about 8 or 9 days when all of a sudden all of the system failure lights came on. I happened to be very near the dealership when it happened, and, of course, they didn't believe me about this second problem. When I showed them the problem, they sent me home in another vehicle and had mine for another 3 days. I was told that night that it was probably because I had just filled it up with gas. What? I had filled it up with gas 2 days before. I was told that sometimes this happens when the gasoline hose nozzle is removed too quickly. It turned out to be some kind of oxygen sensor that was faulty."

Tire wear is uneven

"only on the front wheel...they said we need to bring in for alignment every year...I think something else is wrong"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Honda dealer noticed slight cupping of original tires after replacing front wheel bearings. Other people have mentioned this problem on cars when back tires have been rotated to front, because back of car weight is lighter, causing tire bouncing."

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"fading of panel between right front & rear door"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"This is the first vehicle we have owned that actually gets dents from stones to the point that we have had to take it in once to get a large dent repaired and it looks like we may have to do it again. The extent of paint damage from stones is also unacceptable. The hood looks worse after a couple of years than the 2004 Explorer we just traded in did after 16 years. It seems the metal used in the hood, and the paint, are thin and cannot hold up to normal wear and tear from occasional stones. It will be a factor in ever considering another Honda. This was our first and may be our last since I take pride in the appearance of my vehicles."

Pulsation or vibration

Now I just disable collision mitigation during highway driving which defeats its purpose but saves money on brake service."

Scottie P., OH (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, WA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Tailgate would not open period. Had to leave at dealership over night for them to figure it out."

James P., NC (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"It started with intermittent automatic rear hatch door not working. We could however open and close hatch manually. Car displayed rear hatch problem on main information display. Once problem quit clearing itself I took it to the dealer where he replaced the automatic latch on the door which fixed the problem. Unfortunately it was out of warranty by then so had a $600 bill for that one. The problem started intermittent under warranty, so I should have at least reported the problem before the warranty expired and it could have been covered under warranty. It 50,000 miles that has been our only problem with this vehicle."
