Although well-equipped, the Elantra is largely basic transportation. The ride is comfortable, especially on the highway and the cabin is quiet. Handling is secure, but neither agile nor sporty. Fuel economy is unimpressive, but acceleration is on par with other small sedans. This version of the Elantra's IIHS offset-frontal-crash-test score has improved to Good and its overall crash protection is average.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“The ride is much too soft for a small car. I keep the tires inflated to the maximum allowed by the tire manufacturer to partially compensate.”

KORY H., CA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“O2 sensor issues”

Anonymous, OK (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“handling and acceleration 10 years and 200K miles is still strong and smooth”

LAURA B., VA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“No guts- acceleration has never been that good with this car, and hills have always been hard on it. I rent a car to go on any trips that involve long distances or going over the grapevine (I5 North) these days- I doubt I could drive the car over the grapevine without overheating or worse. The problem is of course increasing as the car gets older.”

Anonymous, CA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“I find that the seats are too low and present a problem for both my wife and myself to enter or leave the vehicle. I have a bad lower back problem and my wife suffers from arthritis.”

N A., NL (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“Outside noise is a problem when listening to the radio.”

Anonymous, IN (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“The only problem with the Elantra is as we have gotten older the low rider is a little harder to get out of...but still a good car...its a little noisier than the more expensive cars but good for the price”

KAY T., MN (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“Horrible uncomfortable seats, causes by lower back to hurt.”

Anonymous, VA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

What Owners Say

“The clear coat on the body of the vehicle started to peel. The spoiler has lost paint color in a large area, leaving white patches.”

Anonymous, FL (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“Wanted a "beater" that looked good, ran okay and was cheap.”

Anonymous, CA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“Best value at the time.”

Anonymous, IL (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“good as honda for LESS money.. in my view”

CARL N., NC (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“it has been a complete joy to own. Except for oil, tires and brakes it has never needed anything other than general maintenance.”

LAURA B., VA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“I bought this car partially on the basis of CR reviews. It has been a wonderful car. I paid it off seven years ago, had an evaluation of it done last year, and I expect it to keep on moving for several more years. Probably the wisest purchase I've ever made in my life.”

JOHN W., TX (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“The rust is problematic.”

Anonymous, NY (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“The paint should have lasted longer. It started to lose its clear coat just over 50,000 miles. The dealer would not correct the problem. Called the manufacturer directed, and they stated they don't know why I called. There was nothing they could do for me. So for a possible $1,000 fix, they lost a customer. I will not buy another Hyundai again.”

Anonymous, FL (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“I like the hatchback design and the ability to carry quite a bit of cargo.”

EVELYN T., CA (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“Its a older car but still looks stylish...”

KAY T., MN (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“For a hatchback that's over 10 years old it's still a very good looking vehicle.”

Anonymous, AZ (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

“My Elantra GT hatchback almost always is mistaken for a Saab. After 11 years and almost 140k miles this car is still going strong and a pleasure to drive”

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Hyundai Elantra)

If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
