This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Rather under powered. Poor low-end torque. Revs too high in top gear at highway speed (3,000 RPM@110 KMH in 5th gear with manual transmission.) Handling is fine."

LES T., BC (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It handles great. I drive it for the fun of it. I could get better mileage if I drove differently but I think it accelerates good enough. the 16 in. rimes and Michelin tires work to give it a better ride and handling than when I bought it"

JOHN R., AZ (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration on entering highways is not as fast as I would like"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Engine is underpowered with a/c on"

JOHN R., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The suspension needs some serious tweaking as the rear end has a tendency to lose it over smaller imperfections in the road such as a 'washboard' effect."

LARRY W., WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Quite a bit of road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra has decent acceleration up to around 55km/hr. Above that it lacks and makes it difficult to pass on the highway above 100km/hr. The handling is stiff and jarring, but that it most likely the 'sport' trim package."

RYAN K., MB (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling is fine, and on long trips it's no problem. Seats are only OK; I need cushions to get to a comfortable height, as the seat isn't adjustable vertically. My main complaint is with the ABS, which, when it engages, is crude and to my mind ineffective (I could do better on my own). But I'm told by others, including my mechanic, that this is how ABS works. I wish I could disengage it, to be honest."

Anonymous, MA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car has gotten me through more serious snow storms than I could have ever imagined a rear-wheel drive car doing. I feel so safe in this car and I am just so impressed with how well it handles in inclement weather."

MELISSA S., MD (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The suspension allows for the driver to feel every bump and the road noise is terrible."

BRADLEY O., WI (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Rough, noisy ride. Can't last more than an hour."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

JOHN K., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is quite good when starting up from a stop light. When getting onto a highway it is a little slow. The automatic is not as good as a manual shift. The handling is quite good at slower speeds and is not bad at higher speeds or in an emergency situation."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Small engine can't generate much acceleration and handling is a little "loose" with brief, initial "hesitations" in response to steering wheel movements. A light vehicle, so you must be careful on curved roads that have bumps."

Lonnie P., AL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"good for a mid-priced car"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It can be fun to drive and love the moon roof. I drive most months with the moon roof open unless it is fairly cold outside or extremely hot. Cold being in 30's and extremely hot being in the 90's."

James M., FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Lack of power and harsh ride on bumpy roads but excellent handling and feel of road."

John-Brenda S., OK (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is sluggish"

Pamela W., GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The size of the vehicle and ease of handling are ideal for a new driver."

Gary D., CT (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"This is a very smooth car. It accelerates nicely and it drives very smoothly. Out of the two cars we own, I prefer to drive this one over our newer car, which is a different make."

Anonymous, AR (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The 4-cylinder engine would be happier as a 5-speed. The transmission seems to slip between gears and doesn't know what to do when decelerating."

Monica T., PA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is extremely reliable but the seats are very cheap as they stain too easily"

John B., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Peppy and sporty"

Anonymous, KS (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"When I needed to replace the tires, I bought performance tires. Yes, it costs me a little in fuel economy (2 MPG) but they way they handle makes the Elantra into a little sporty sedan. Hate it when I have to put the winter tires on as they have the same fuel penalty but without the 'fun factor.'"

Anonymous, PA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The selection of the gearing ratios is very poor. It's constantly hunting between gears and you're either under-geared or over-geared. I question the competence of the engineers who designed the transmission in this car."

Anonymous, OH (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"the ride"

Anonymous, WI (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I would have liked a quieter car."

LYNN S., OH (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I can drive to Hot Springs, AR, an 11 hour drive, with no seat discomfort. something I can't do with our Toyota Sienna."

LORIS F., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Once I got rid of the factory tires and put on Michellins tires road noise was cut in half!"

RODGER D., WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"There is a reflection of the dash on the windshield due to the angle of the windshield. This is very distracting and potentially dangerous."

KEN J., MB (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Would like more insulation for road noise"

PAUL S., MN (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's a rather rough ride (manhole covers) and a bit noisy. But I love the heated seats!"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Adjustable lumbar position needed"

JAMES M., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Cooling fan is very noisy. Car shakes when fan and/or Air conditioning is on"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Ride is the least satisfying feature. rather harsh, noisy."

WILLIAM H., ME (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling, acceleration, overall size, controls, mileage, value are excellent. Noise is bad, ride is stiff perhaps due to low profile tires. Temperature sensor failure in transmission at 34,000 km was expensive to fix."

PAUL C., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The one thing I don't like about my car is the road noise."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are very easy to stain and the stains are permanent."

JOHN B., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are uncomfortable, must use a pillow behind my back, so that I don't feel like I'm all hunched over."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Could be quieter - especially when fitted with winter tires."

Anonymous, AB (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The front passenger seat is very uncomfortable for the passenger. She feels like she is sitting in a hole. Also, the front passenger air vent cannot be closed, so the passenger becomes uncomfortable when the the air conditioner is turned up."

GARY H., IN (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Somewhat noisy. Sluggish acceleration even with a manual shift gear box. Good braking system and overall a good reliable vehicle for the money."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Road noise is quite pronounced and the ride is rough. Fuel economy is not what the manufacturer advertised."

ROY M., SC (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Comfortable seats for a small car and the heated seats are a big hit with my wife."

JOHN W., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats uncomfortable, ride rough, noisy."

DAVID S., MN (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are extremely uncomfortable. I do not like driving this car on long trips."

Scott P., CT (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra has stiff seats, that whole supportive, are uncomfortable for long trips. There is a lot of road noise and the car shimmies above 60 mph."

Monica T., PA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It came with 3rd row seats and actually for what they are they are pretty comfortable and roomy. the in cabin noise is much less than my old Sante Fe. The driver seat and controls are easy to use - perhaps could have added to passenger seat. Love the heated sets!"

Cindy L., FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent legroom, can adjust seats in several ways to get comfortable seating position, the ride is firm a well controlled without being harsh, decent amount of suspension travel"

Anonymous, CO (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are comfortable, however, noise level is sometimes annoying, especially with winter tires."

Anonymous, AB (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Too much road noise"

Matthew B., FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The seats are quite comfortable for a person of average size. I am 5' 8". The noise in the the interior is a little loud when driving at higher speeds. The ride is a little hard when going over bumps. It depends what tires you have on the vehicle."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I love the heated seats. The noise needs to be reduced. Too much road noises."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The elantra has alot of road noise"

Anonymous, OH (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The vision is blocked by the back window posts, and have often signaled into cars to my right coming from behind on the freeway. Vision is also difficult when parking because seating is not far enough above the ground to get a good angle or know where the front is."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great economy car"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Road noise level is annoying. Ride is a bit harsh."

Anonymous, IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

Robert V., TX (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Not very comfortable for trips."

David S., KS (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I wish this car had lumbar support"

Christine K., IL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It telegraphs every single imperfection in the road directly to your spine."

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"For a small car the fuel economy is mediocre. Maintenance has been more expensive than average."

FLORIS V., CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"We spent just under $20K for this car and have gotten 40 MPG on several occasions while traveling on the highway. It looks good, is very comfortable, drives well, and hasn't cost us much to keep up. That's how I define value!"

BEVERLY H., TN (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Visually, it's a nicely designed small car. It has a big trunk. But the passenger seat is too low to the ground for comfort. The biggest complaint is that it gets nowhere near the 40 mpg advertised. Even on the highway we rarely get over 28-30. We would not have purchased the car had we known that."

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Hyundai Elantra Touring (Wagon) is inexpensive transportation, even when nicely optioned it is still an affordable vehicle. Plus the 6 year 100K power train warranty is great peace of mind."

Anonymous, MI (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's been very reliable, though it very low mileage. Reglar check-ups are all that has been required so far after 5 years on the road..."

I C., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Better equipped with much nicer and more modern styling and very reliable than the competition at the time (2011 model year)"

Anonymous, HI (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The initial value seems good to me. But I keep my cars until they can't be driven any longer. So I need to withhold final opinion until I determine how many years and miles of low maintenance the car will provide."

Anonymous, GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Gas milage is not what was stated and winter driving is poor"

DAN P., WI (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"A basic car, good cargo area, responsive in traffic and on highway, uncomfortable to sit in for over an hour at a time."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very noisy"

ALFONSO B., CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Have had no issues whatsoever with the car which makes it a great value"

LANA H., GA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"maintenance costs extremely high for mileage on vehicle"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good: No mechanical defects, great service Bad: Noisy ride, turn signals cannot be seen, it's a gasoline-consuming car."

Anonymous, VA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I put in a new sound system. The subwoofer takes up some space but there is still a ton of space. The seats fold down. Lots of space for me and my tall friends. We are all 6 feet or taller. It rides great. I have Michelins and they make a difference. Great car. I get a lot of compliments"

JOHN R., AZ (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Terrific gas mileage and very stylish. Because of it's light weight, it handles very well and has superb visibility."

ALAN J., WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The 50,000/100,000 warranty has covered the several issues with the transmission shifting, i.e., no costs to me. For $18,000 purchase price new, this has been a remarkable value. Only costs have been oil, filters, & tires (recently)."

Lonnie P., AL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra has provided excellent value both at purchase and throughout the years of ownership due to very high reliability . However, there have been many recalls on this vehicle but Hyundai has seamlessly taken care of all of these and stood behind the product . that in itself represent good value."

Paul G., ON (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"a lot of bang for the buck"

Dan F., MA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Overall, so far, with regular service, the car has been a good value."

Anonymous, KY (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car came with a lot of features for the price compared to similar models. The true value has been how trouble-free the car has been in the 7 years I have owned it. I have replaced the battery this and tires this year. These are the only expenses outside of scheduled maintenance. The car is just as solid and rattle-free as the day I bought it."

Anonymous, CO (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent value, radio hard to work without taking eyes off road."

Anonymous, IN (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"I've owned and rented scores of cars in my life. This car is the best over all vehicle that I've ever seen."

Marc N., WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"It drives like a more expensive car, and had all of the features I wanted in the options package."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, SC (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Overall the car is not terrible. It has been a good deal so far."

Scott P., CT (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Reasonable price for a good all-around vehicle"

Anonymous, VT (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Super low cost of ownership. Very reliable. Not as many bells and whistles as some cars, but is always ready when you are."

Anonymous, WA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Other than very poor handling in snow and ice I like the car very much"

Anonymous, ME (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Styling is good and the driving experience can be fun if one wants to take the car to a road with more turns. It is not a sports car but can still be fun. At the time I felt a got a very good quality product that also looked very good on the road. extremely upset that the vehicle did not come with at least a donut spare tire. This was the first vehicle that I bought that did not have a full size or donut spare tire as standard and never thought to check. The dealer never pointed this out. Also sales persons at different dealerships as well as TV ads tout that the car can go 7500 miles between oil changes. When take to get serviced it is recommended to change oil every 3000 miles. When look at the maintenance manual and read the fine print there is practically no where the car can be owned and driven to be in an environment where one can go 7500 miles between oil changes. I do not even know where such a place exists."

James M., FL (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"would like a rear view window wiper good basic car"

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"Bought it new for $19000. Current Kelly blue book value is only $2500. Upkeep has cost me a lot."

Pj C., AR (2011 Hyundai Elantra)

"The 2011 Elantra Touring (wagon) looks like almost nothing else on the road, It is rare that a month goes by without someone commenting on how much they like to blue paint and how the car looks. It has great utility, and a reasonable interior."
