Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The electric power steering gives zero road feel. If my attention wanders even for a few seconds the car will wander out of lane."

Thomas Z., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Somewhat under-powered."

Lawrence H., FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"After 10 years, my Elantra still accelerates very quickly and handling is quick and smooth."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The engine is sized right for this size of vehicle. Snappy response from a stop and when passing."

Patrick M., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent in ice"

Anonymous, NV (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling is fun, its a small car with a mid size car feel, easy to park in parking lots where I live that have big pick-up trucks."

David K., CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's easy, a very enjoyable experience"

Burton B., FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Accelerates pretty well. Response is instantaneous."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling OK. The acceleration is adequate for most people, though will not win any races. Like most things in life “machines, relationships etc‿ they will last if you maintain them"

Anonymous, FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"I have no difficulty bringin this car up to highway speed when I enter the expressway. This car is equipped with Electronic Stability Control. It stops well in ice and snow."

Jane L., IL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car accelerates and handles very well. No hesitation on acceleration, and handles just fine."

B M., TX (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"For winter driving conditions narrower snow tires are a must. The wide factory tires turn this vehicle into a hockey on ice and worthless in driving through snow deeper than about 2 inches."

CHRIS F., MN (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Dead steering feel makes the car tend to wander with zero feedback at the wheel."

THOMAS Z., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Nice, smooth running engine with plenty of acceleration even after more than 200,000 miles of use."

Patrick M., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is slow"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car rides Ok for a compact-a big improvement over previous model but pales in comparison to new model. Acceleration is adequate for it's class."

Kenneth M., MA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"after 11 years and 180000 miles, still very quiet and comfortable"

John W., CT (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Comfortable good gas mileage and reliable transportation"

Julius H., NJ (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The interior environment declines fairly steeply with age, road noise gets a lot noisier, and the suspension gets a lot mushier as the car ages"

Anonymous, MA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"good comfort, etc"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Road noise makes it difficult with my declining hearing to hear others in the cabin. On trips of an hour or more fatigue sets in."

Anonymous, IA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"We love the cloth seats. Not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Our Elantra seats are not comfortable and they are cloth and are so worn out and stained. If we would have known our Elantra would get to 200,000 miles, we would definitely have gotten leather seats for interior longevity. Also, for some reason this survey didn’t ask about safety belts on this car. The driver side seatbelt doesn’t roll in and out properly and sometimes gets stuck in an unusable position. We looked into having it repaired but it was quoted at about $600 because the side airbag is also part of the assembly. Of course I want it repaired for safety but my husband drives it and just leaves it stretched out and plugged into the buckle when he gets out so it doesn’t get reeled all the way back in. He claims it’s fine. We’re both from Detroit and have never bought a foreign car in our combined 55 years of driving before this Elantra. I didn’t want it but I must concede that outside of the interior, this has been our longest lasting car with by far the fewest necessary repairs we’ve ever had."

T E., GA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Heated front seats, adjustable height, good cool air, good heated air,"

Anonymous, ON (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The air conditioner is very undersized and can only keep the car cool by running it on max recirculate. Dealer tells me it is operating correctly."

THOMAS Z., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The A/C is marginal, especially in the back seat, when the temperature gets hot."

VINCENT B., MO (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"the seats seem to be increasingly uncomfortable especially the seat backs"

DONALD S., PA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Not quite enough leg room with the seat all the way back."

PATRICK M., NC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Not enough leg room since knee surgery."

MARK J., MD (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is difficult to get into the driver's seat without banging your head -- and I am a short person."

KASSANDRA S., WI (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats and seating position are extraordinarily comfortable. Road and wind noise is annoying and interferes with listening to the radio and music."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Satisfied with comfort but findt he noise annoying when highway driving."

LARRY W., ON (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very reliable. No major engine repairs."

Anonymous, IL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very satisfied"

"Nice car to own"

Jason S., OH (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"With trade-in, I paid about $17,500 for this vehicle, new in 2008. I keep it well maintained and it starts every day, it gets me where I need to go without breaking down. The body is just beginning to show signs of paint deterioration, bubbles above the tire wells. I live in a snowy climate and I have snow tires because the car is small and light in weight and got caught in snow drifts. Snow tires solved this problem."

Jane L., IL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Highly reliable, great hi-way gas mileage, economical to own, mine is 10 years old , over 300 K high way miles, dealer maintained, I love it."

David K., CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"few expenses other than routine maintenance ...timing bely at 110000 miles; 2 batteries first lasting 4 years, second 6 years has been reliable and dependable without any maintenance except routine"

Wallace K., MD (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"ow miantenance costs"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"It has been problem free for 10 years."

Anonymous, WI (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"I paid $13500 in 2008 for my Hyundai Elantra. Since I have not had ANY major repairs since that time, the Value of this model far exceeds the price."

Anonymous, FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Has been very reliable very low maintenance calls"

Marc L., WV (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car being 10 years old, and there have not been any major repairs. Rides well for a 10 year old car. Only rattles which make the vehicle not as solid as I would like it. Everything in the car works well."

Steven G., VA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent in snow and ice"

Anonymous, NV (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Cost of ownership is very low. We are about to pass 200k after 10 years and the cost of maintenance has been very low, along with good gas mileage."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"I got a great deal on a reliable efficient car with many of the extras, including leather seats, that I would have had to pay $7-10,000 more for from other carmakers."

Anonymous, IL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

DENNIS H., AL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Hyundais were already low-priced back in 2009. I decided to purchase a 2008 Elantra shortly after it made the cover of that year's CR mag as the highest scoring small car (score of 82). I spent about 6 to 8 hours at the local dealership test driving 4 comparable cars (including a Mazda 3 & Civic). The Elantra was the best (and changing the oil appeared to be possible & accessible compared to the others). I brought an add from a Seattle newspaper showing a new 2008 Elantra on sale. I said if they"

Anonymous, WA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"I purchased the Elantra SE, as a result of your testing of that model in 2008. You rated the SE as the highest rated compact, as the SE had features both safety and convenience. I purchased the car sight unseen as the Dealer had no SE models in stock at the time. They also offered a $1000 rebate on the model which was an added appeal."

STEPHEN H., FL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"This is probably the best car I've had for the price. The car has 200,000 miles and still running very well."

B M., TX (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"I was used to buying luxury cars, however due to unforseen circumstances in 2008, I had to buy a car that was reasonably priced with great quality and warranty. This was it. My car still drives great."

JOAN F., DC (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Rock bottom price for a small sedan, good service and practical features. My first automatic and love the ease of driving. Nice touches such as power mirror adjustments, console compartments, intermittent wipers, fog lights and extra slider shades on the sun visors. Good gas mileage."

Anonymous, NH (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"In the future, I think I would look at a hybrid (gas/electric) car to increase gas mileage."

JANE L., IL (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"dealer had to make monthly sales quota"

TOM P., MA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Something is wrong with the electronic system. Passenger window control doesn't work intermittently; tail lights don't go off intermittently; battery gets drained completely intermittently when no lights are left on."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Liked the layout of the inside, like how many storage spaces inside are available, like the size of the trunk in relation to the size of the vehicle."

MICHAEL D., WA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Mechanically, this car has been a very reliable vehicle"

Anonymous, CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent value on this vehicle. Very few issues and an excellent, reliable performer!"

Stephan P., ON (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Just went over 220k miles and only changed the timing belt once. This car has paid for itself many times over and I still get up to 38 mpg on highway. Looking forward to 300k which is uncharted territory for me."

Kenneth M., MA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good value, still a tight, good handling car after 154 thousand miles. I wish they still made these this size."

Anonymous, MA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"Overall, very reliable and durable. I continue to enjoy the car, though aesthetically it is showing its age significantly at this point. But, in fairness, it has been kept outdoors throughout the time I've had it."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)

"The value we got with the Elantra was great. It has been great since we got it. It works well for road trips."

Anonymous, PA (2008 Hyundai Elantra)
