Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2009 Hyundai Elantra owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"One of two outlets was dead"

Ron S., ON (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The vehicle has shown problems with the electrical system - the power plug has malfunctioned as and the manufacturer installed alarm goes off when it is windy or if the hood is not slammed down. Dashboard lights go off too. I've had the problems fixed but they are annoying. Mechanically the car is excellent. At 10 years old it still has great pickup. I just drove it from NYC to Virginia Beach and back with no issues."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"For no specific action that I can determine, sometimes as I'm ready to leave the car, it acts like it's being stolen. Alarms go off, the car won't start, the emergency flashers go on, and I can't disarm it. The Hyundai dealer told me it was a defec"

Elaine R., DC (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"car wouldn't start on occasion. Anti theft device didn't recognise key. Cost almost $900.00 to repair, still occurred, finally deprogrammed keys, seems to be O.K. Not happy. Tail lights were burning out, provided fix under recall"

Jim K., ON (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Alarm would would go off when parked. Repaired by installing new spacer"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Body control module

"Interior door lock button on driver's side became harder to use. Couldn't lock door from inside without punching the autolock button a number of times."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"at least 3 different exterior lights seem to burn out every 6--9 months"

R L., MN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake light switch needed to be replaced"

David F., NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Taillight blinkers"

Richard H., OR (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Tail, brake lights burning out. Recall provided fix. Seems to be fine now"

Jim K., ON (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I had a fog light bulb burned out. I bought a replacement from the auto parts store and replaced it myself. I also had to replace my third brake light (center one) which I replaced myself"

John S., KS (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I am 71 years old and have owned approximately 12 different automobiles and I have replaced more light bulbs on the Hyundai than on all the other cars combined. and this includes all exterior lights"

James W., TN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Side marker, brake, license plate, and brake lights burning out"

Jim L., MN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Headlights

"The drivers side headlight assembly developed some condensation and I bought a replacement from Amazon and installed it myself. The total cost was $81.00. I also replaced a fog light bulb this year"

John S., KS (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I am 71 years old and have owned approximately 12 different automobiles and I have replaced more light bulbs on the Hyundai than on all the other cars combined. And this includes all ext. lights"

James W., TN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"3 headlight bulbs have burned out in one year. 2 2 days apart following an oil change. It requires a mechanic to take out the battery and windsheild wiper fluid dispenser to replace them. Each "bulb" costs $22. It will end up costing apx $100 to replace 2 lightbulbs. In the 1970's it cost $1.50 and I could do it myself"

Anonymous, MN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Interior lights

"Dashlight (some not all) are burning out - LED should last much longer"

Anonymous, TN (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Keyless entry

"doors lock/unlock randomly, and trunk opens randomly-including 3x while driving. 3 dealers have not been able to consistently fix the electrical "ghost""

David D., IA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Problems getting the electronic door system to synch with key fob and manual switches. Doors & trunk would unlock/lock spontaneously, including having trunk open while driving or while parked (including at malls, parking lots, in the rain). Problem was also connected to 1 door window system. Finally got the systems connected and functional, although do have continued clicking noises (as if the system is trying to automatically lock doors-already locked-while driving); have had intermittent recurrences of doors spontaneously locking but not issues with trunk opening since the repair."

David D., IA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"One of the 4 doors no longer consistently responds to the keyless device."

Nicholas D., VA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The electronic lock/unlock system and related systems were dysfunctional shortly after purchase. The car randomly locks & unlocks doors and opens the trunk, including while driving. The car has been to 5 different dealerships in 3 states, with the electrical Bluetooth system re-programmed, de-programmed, and programmed but has never corrected the problem. I cannot trust that the car will remain locked when parked somewhere, nor can I trust that it will be unlocked such as when I park in my garage, and I can't trust that the trunk will stay shut while parked somewhere or while driving. The random trunk opening has decreased in frequency. The trunk has opened while parked at a mall, at work, and elsewhere, with 2 of these instances resulting in a soaked trunk from rain; fortunately nothing has been stolen yet-but I don't leave anything of value in there. I'd like to sell this, but will not do this unless somebody can figure out how to correct this "lemon gremlin.""

Anonymous, IA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Continuing problem with erratic operation of door locking and unlocking, trunk unlocking & opening. Has been to 5 dealers (one 4 times) in 3 states; nobody seems to be able to keep it fixed. Trunk unlocks opens randomly (including while driving or while parked and away from the vehicle), doors lock without anybody around, and doors do not reliably lock with use of door lock switch or remote key fob lock. Have had the trunk area soaked 2x in rainstorms after it opened by itself while away from the vehicle."

Robert S., QC (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"the drivers side front caliper got stuck in the "brakes released" state, with ZERO wear on the pads, causing ALL the front brake wear to the passenger side ONLY. those pads were completely gone and the steel backing plate itself was gouging the rotor"

Matthew S., WA (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Sticking caliper. Destroyed new brake pads. Dealer did not discover bad caliper when installing new brake pads all around. (I had even mentioned brake noise before initial service!) Ended up replacing both rear calipers at service advisors recommendation. Another $1,000 out of pocket! Now I know why they cost less than Hondas and Toyotas"

Gerald H., VA (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The caliper stuck and wore through the brake pad and scored the rotors"

George M., PA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"The rear brake pads and calipers needed replacing yet the fronts were still good. This is a bit unusual as usually the fronts need replacing first"

Albert D., NJ (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"just normal wear and tear on a car with 200K + mileage"

Roma N., NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After the extended use brakes to be done. Will be check when inspection is done."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Brakes were getting noisy, not stopping quite like it used to."

Roy S., MA (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"After 60,000 miles the brakes began to make a whispering sound. I took it in to my mechanic and he replaced the front brake pads and turned the roters. He charged $132.00 which I believe is quite reasonable. No more wispers."

Don S., MO (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"At about 152,500 kms. the FRONT caliper pads and rotors needed to be changed. At the same time, the REAR brake slides had only to be cleaned, lubricated and adjusted."

Robert S., QC (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Front pads were not wearing evenly on the rotors. Wear was sooner than expected. This was the second set of pads and rotors so was not original equipment."

Anonymous, SK (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Parking brake

"Bottom line up front: the car is rusting, causing the parking brake shoe to be retained in the wrong place. Detail: The parking brake currently is jimmy-rigged together, and does almost nothing to prevent the car from rolling forward when applied, it does a decent job holding the car from rolling backwards. I serviced the drums & shoes of the parking brakes myself a year ago. While servicing, I discovered that the hole in the backing plate which the brake-shoe-hold-down-spring-pin slides through and is retained against had rusted enough that it couldn't retain the pin anymore. I jimmy rigged a washer to fit onto the pin, but it holds the pin in a place adjacent to where it's supposed to be. So, the car is rusting, and now the parking brake pretty much doesn't work."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"has not worked since 4-5 years old, seems unfixable"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"Brakes last 28000 miles"

Steven B., IL (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"same problem. the passenger side brake pads were so damaged that during the drive to the shop that they actually failed and locked up because the pads had dropped out of place and wedged the rotor/and caliper, until i removed them from the brake area"

Matthew S., WA (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"sorry, don't have time"

Anonymous, VT (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Pulsation or vibration

"Bottom Line Up Front: the passenger side rear caliper seized up and the resulting heat warped the rotor. Detail: my car started to drag, as in the brakes were sticking. I thought the shoes of the parking brake were causing the problem, but when I finally serviced the brakes, I discovered the pads of the passenger side rear brakes were almost completely worn away, and the drivers side rear were fine. After destroying a c-clamp trying to get the caliper piston to retract, I discovered the caliper piston had seized, and caused the dragging. Replaced the caliper and brakes pulse, presumably because the rear rotor was warped by the sized caliper piston and the heat it caused."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Hyundai Elantra Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"Driver's side rear caliper and rotor both worn completely out. Passenger side was normal wear"

Willis M., BC (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"when changing brake pads also have to change rotors. rotors rust/wear when pads wear"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I think it needed to be replaced prematurely"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaking

"An intermittent chirp turned out to be the seizure of one of the rear brake drum self-adjusters. Repair was cheap and also took a lot of slack out of the parking brake"

Anonymous, MB (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Power steering pumps and hoses

"The electronic power steering does not work. Steering becomes very stiff. This seems to happen commonly in hot weather when the car has been parked outside. Hyandai are now doing a recall to fix the problem"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The steering motor coupling was making a clunking sound. It was covered under a TSB. The dealer replaced it FOC and it's fine now."

Shocks or struts

"Just normal wear and tear on a car with 200K+ of mileage"

Roma N., NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I used to work in the aftermarket and we didn't see problems with shocks and struts below 100K miles, but I am told that now people do. I was surprised to find that my shocks are going so quickly at under 100K when I don't run the vehicle hard"

"Sometimes radio will not respond to controls: won’t turn on, or off, or change station, or respond to volume control. Was once replaced under warrantee years ago, for same reasons"

Robert B., MB (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The has electrical problems. The USB port, radio and speakers do not work. Replacement would be expensive and there is no guarantee that the underlying electrical problem would be repaired. Also, when it is windy the factory installed alarm goes off - the solution is to lift the hood and slam it down then lock the door with the key and not use the alarm. There is something slightly off with the connection to the alarm. The car is mechanically sound but because of the electrical problems I would probably not purchase another one."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"For an unknown reason, the radio portion of the sound system just stopped working. The best information i could get suggested a problem with the antenna which was deemed to be too expensive to investigate and repair."

Alexander B., TX (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"pretty sure they are all the same problem but, the cabin vent blower motor stopped running, and due to that, the A/C won't run... also, i recently had V-Belt squeals so i had both belts (alternator and A/C compressor) changed with new, but even after i had both belts changed, the squeals persist on start-up and at random times even after the engine is warm, usually during acceleration or cornering. i have checked that they are tight, so it might be a bearing starting to go."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Engine races momentarily between gears, not every time. Hyundai dealer could not make it happen. Still in warranty, so waiting for problem to either get better or get worse"

Betty S., MS (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Slightly burned transmission fluid and delayed shifting from 1st to 2nd gear and sometimes delayed shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear."

Frank T., NY (2009 Hyundai Elantra 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When very hot, troubles shifting DOWN VERY intermittent"

Gerald M., OH (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The transmission shifts erratically. Sometimes up and down for no reason, and will happen without notice. This has been going on for three years. The dealer recommends a new transmission"

Karl X., CA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Automatic transmission. Occasionally "hunts" for a gear and "bangs" into gear. Usually at low speed but sometimes occurs upon strong acceleration at highway speed (merging, etc.)"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Put into reverse, car didn't move when throttle applied. Thought maybe I missed reverse and had it in neutral, but that wasn't the case when I looked. In that moment there was a disturbingly loud CLUNK and the car suddenly jetted backwards. Now there's a quiet little ping every time we shift into reverse. Very excited to be getting rid of this car this year, especially now that the warranty expired. Last year was a full engine rebuild and seems like the transmission is shaping up the same way..."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally the automatic transmission seems like it's lost between gears, then it will WHAM into the next gear. Also sometimes fails to downshift-- stays in too high a gear for the speed and lugs the engine. Blipping the accelerator pedal fixes it."

James B., OH (2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Dealer couldn't identify problem before lease ended. But repaired under my purchased extended warranty"

Richard C., FL (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I think the transmission is slipping. It does not stop us from driving the car, but it feels like a slip going up hills, not going right away from stop lights. We had the transmission checked out, the mechanics said it was fine. So, meh"

Robert W., PA (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission has been slipping for 3 years. The shifting is erratic. Three years ago, The dealer said I need a new transmission. The transmission slips erratically. It is always inconsistent. I haven't rebuilt the unit, and won't until it fails completely. The tranny in this car is a piece of garbage, and should have been recalled!!"

Karl X., CA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, MA (2009 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

I can't imagine another company turning a transmission change into a positive experience"

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"Transmission began soft shifts @ 40k miles, sliding into gear rather than solid. Began upshifting during accelleration, then eratic. Dlr finally agreed it was failed and replaced it under warrantee. Now excellent ever since. AC Tension pully bad"

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine starting making chunking noise. Thought it was valve adjustment, but dealer called back with warranty-approved engine replacement. We were surprised. This is the THIRD engine issue this car has had in 70k miles - the other two were problems with oil leaking from the valves. This car would have been a huge expense if not for Hyundai's 10 year warranty."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Hyundai Elantra SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Head gasket

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Battery cables

"I have noticed in the last 3 or 4 years difficulty in starting the car in cold weather, progressively getting worse over time. Even though I've replaced the battery twice, it had gotten to the point where it would not start at all in the cold weather. I ended up removing the starter motor. There was a build-up of corrosion where the battery cable connected to the solenoid and also on the cable that connected the solenoid to the starter motor. After using a combination of a wire brush, sand paper and a metal file to remove the corrosion, coated the contact surfaces with dielectric grease then reassembled the connections. No more starter problems since."
