This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

"Driver's door locks for no explainable reason. 3 trips to dealer were unsuccessful. They claim that that it does not happen when they have it. BS! They know that they have to take dashboard apart to fix."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring Unsure)
Clock

"I have an intermittent problem with my clock/radio. It goes dead (incl display) for several minutes, and then comes back. Apparently, the only true fix would be a replacement for $1000, plus an adjustment to my satellite radio subscription. Not impressed. I don't have that kind of cash, so I'll put up with it -- for a while, anyway"

Anonymous, TX (2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"A chronic issue with this vehicle is that it brake lights do not last very long. I have to replace bulbs numerous times. I do not buy the cheapest ones I can find. This is consistent with all brands of bulbs that I have used. I see many Hyundai Elantra on the road with burnt out tail lights so I perceive this is some sort of chronic electrical issue."

Chris F., AL (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Tail lights, including brake lites, frequently burn out; and socket connections are dodgy"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited Unsure)

"Actually a failure in the electric lock on one door. Another door has an intermittent problem that will fail after the warranty expires in 4 months"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"There is some problem with the relay - so it does not always lock/unlock all four dours. It's not really a problem with the keyless entry, it's a problem with the door locks. I haven't gotten it checked out yet"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring)

"The electric locks don't work some times."

Lee L., FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

"Many bulbs blowing- hard to replace"

Stacy S., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Remote engine starter

"sometimes it works, sometimes it won't"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I had a remote start system installed by Hyundai approximately 5 years after purchase. Approximately 2-3 months after installation, the climate system (heating and cooling) no longer turned on when I activated the remote start. Only the engine would turn on. I would need to insert the key into the ignition and turn it to start in order for the heat/cooling to begin blowing. I returned to the dealership that installed the remote start system and was informed that because it was purchased after-market and required replacement as opposed to repair, I would need to pay for the labor to re-install another system."

Anonymous, DE (2012 Hyundai Elantra)
Tire pressure monitor

"The TPM has been an ongoing problem for the last 6 months. It has falsely turned on the warning light a number of times and Hyundai can't find a reason why it is happening. I'm sure I will have to end up buying a new sensor, which means more money wasted on this car! I will never buy another Hyundai!!!"

"TPMS sensor failed on one tire. Approx repair cost was $50.00"

Tom R., GA (2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Light continuously on....Dealer service confirmed it was not a problem with the tires BUT with the switch and wanted $100 to reset it."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Tire pressure warning light kept coming on even when tire pressure was just two pounds low. I did have a tire problem and it turned out to also be a suspension problem. But I felt that the pressure monitor was extra sensitive and caused me great stress every time it came on."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

"monitor comes on and i check all four tires. they are all fine, up to pressure and equal. i drive for a couple of miles and the monitor goes out. a week later the same thing happens all over again. stealership cant find problem"

Anonymous, MA (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"My tire pressure warning light has been consistently lit for at least 1-2 years, despite the actual pressure in the tires. As a result, I have to regularly manually check my tire pressure, and eyeball the pressure based on exterior visual assessment each time I drive."

Anonymous, DE (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra Unsure Unsure)

"Air bag warning light stays on. Dealer claims that it needs to read the computer to determine cause. I have my own reader and get no problems showing. They still want to charge me $80.00 to do the read. The might is still on."

Anonymous, KS (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"screen turned black while in backup mode. fixed the problem by slamming the trunk hard. I understand the cameras are not protected from the elements very well and tend to build up corrosion. slamming the hood seems to knocks the corrosion off"

William S., IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Since about 35,000 miles we have complained about the radio constantly cycling itself on and off by itself. While driving the radio will turn off and then 3 seconds later it turns the system back in again. Sometimes this happens every 3 minutes and sometimes it works fine for a few days and then begins to cycle again"

Gary K., MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Hardware replacement

"This problem started immediately after we bought the car in late 2011. We took it to the dealer and we were told to just use a paper clip to reset the unit and shown how to do it. We had to reset it everyday so we took it back a total of 15 times in the 1st few years and they kept showing us how to reset the unit. When we bought the car the dealer told us about the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on the power train and the 5 year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. We continued to take the car in for the same issue and at 30,000 miles and 4 years we were told the init is no longer covered under warranty and that the head unit only has a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty which we were never told about. What good is a 5 year/60,000 mike bumper to bumper warranty if it only covers certain items? That is not bumper to bumper. Only the radio worked, no GPS, no bluetooth and a part time backup camera that fogged up. At 77,000 mikes I demanded that the dealer do something about all the problems. They told me they had NO record of all the times I was in with the problem over the years. I told them that I had no control over what their service people did when I brought the car in each of the more than 15 times. I was finally able to speak to the person in charge of the service departments at all of their dealerships, about 20 of them and he said he would be in the area soon and wanted to see the vehicle. As soon as he got in and tried to use the unit he told us, since Hyundai had refused to cover it under warranty and his local service people had not notated each time I was in with the problem, he ordered us a brand new unit and said his dealership would cover it if I agree to pay the $75. To co er the installation. Of course I did and they called me in a week to bring the car in for the new unit. It only took the dealer 7 years to do the right thing, but I should not have had any charge at all if they had replaced the unit 7 years ago under warranty."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The display screen had a line going from top to bottom. This was noticed when the vehicle was originally picked up from the dealer. The unit was replaced"

Allan C., NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited)

"The Elantra has had recurring electrical problems since it was new. The navigation system and Bluetooth crashed 2 months after the warranty ran out. Very expensive to replace"

Cynthia O., AL (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited)

"GPS did not work properly. I had to replace the radio. After a month or two wait, the replacement was worse than the original. It wouldn’t allow correct address input. I had previously complained about the phone not being able to load my contacts. The dealer told me my phone software was newer than the radio’s and it couldn’t be updated. However, the replacement radio DID update it but I couldn’t get it to take verbal commands to place a call. I’ve been waiting about 3 weeks to hear from them what they plan to do to fix it. The radio is under extended warranty."

Susan F., CT (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

"No longer works"

Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"After correctly working for a number of years, I now cannot make a hands free call without having to actually physically open my cell phone. This has been an issue for the last two years. Calls are received with no problems but "hands free" calling has now become a safety issue. I still have the same phone as when I purchased the car"

Arthur Z., IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The Bluetooth system works sometimes and doesn't others. Sometimes it can't find the phone. Sometimes it doesn't understand the commands. Sometimes it says "no number available" but dials anyway. It's just really flaky"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra Limited 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The entire unit (display with temperature, time and radio/CD) was intermittent. It was maddening, to say the least. Sometimes it would work, sometimes not, with no discernible problem showing any time I had the dealer look at it. I finally bit the bullet and replaced the whole unit. So far, so good."

Peggy W., ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"stopped working completely (along with CD)"

Andrea P., SD (2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

Dealership replaced both struts and provided a new tire, all free of charge and without discussion, It was not the first time such an event was reported to this dealership. Dealer had to get Hyundai to help diagnose the problem, and nobody had an answer for why it happened. considering the other minor issues with this car (flaky Bluetooth, speakers failing, sunroof switch failing) I probably won't buy Hyundai again"

It usually does start, but I have been stranded a few times when it wouldn't.
