Contemporary compact sedans have grown roomier, more substantial, and more fuel efficient. These aren't the tiny, "first new cars" the segment used to be. Case in point, the redesigned 2017 Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra delivers the roominess and fuel economy to compete in this crowded segment, but it falls short in refinement and performance.

What Owners Say

"Driving is enjoyable. Handles well in all conditions and is just fun to drive. Has lots of pep - all I need and is great in traffic."

George S., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"With active cruise control engaged, I have had two instances where the car did not perceive the car in front of me and began to accelerate rapidly. Paying attention I took control and slowed down. I am not sure when it might have detected the vehicle."

Fred A., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is average but handling is good and it’s easy."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Needs more power and better handling. The Sport model offers these features, but does not allow you to add the many safety features that are important to us."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"land change, collision avoidance and good acceleration"

David B., AB (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is fine. Ride is a bit on the harsh side."

"The acceleration is fine for me. Handling I think is great"

David C., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent steering and handling."

"Don’t like the lack of acceleration."

Anonymous, KY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"For a young man or women in college this would be a perfect starter car. Backup camera, android play, good room inside and nice to drive."

Adrian J., CT (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It doesn't accerate fast enough"

Anonymous, BC (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Three driving modes. Standard, eco and sport. Sport is clearly effect in city driving becAuse of rapid aeleration etc.Hahdling very good."

Marsha H., NC (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It doesn't have enough power."

Holly S., NC (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Warning system is excellent"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It has 3 driving modes. If I want to make a quick acceleration I use the sport mode. If I'm on an interstate highway and use the economy mode I nearly always get around a 43 mpg. The third mode is sort of a combination of the other two modes."

Mary B., LA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"If someone else drives her, I can put her back to my specs for driving in a snap"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is sluggish at best. It’s a 2liter, 4 cylinder engine and my previous car wa a 4.6 liter 6 cylinder engine, so I guess I’m a little underwhelmed by the Hyundai’s performance."

Joseph P., IL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"good acceleration and steering, mileage, very responsive."

Scott G., IN (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Hyundai accelerates quickly and smoothly, and has plenty of power to get out of any tight situations. It handles very responsively."

P D., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Slow, loud, with lots of road noise"

James B., AZ (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car drives great but it is too low! The first week I had it a car stop had exposed rebar and it tore the bottom of the car. Also, it is very noisy when travelling at on highways."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"excellent transportation, comfortable, economic, nice looking and an excellent value for the price."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceration at low end on a turn is poor, you have to accelerate hard to get it to move. The ride is hard."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This Elantra Eco is marketed as an economy compact sedan. But it will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds, faster than the regular Elantra with a bigger 2 liter engine. The small 1.4 liter Eco engine allows for the high fuel economy but the turbocharger offers instant response to the gas pedal. It is an amazing little engine. The dual clutch transmission offers faster shifts than trying to speed shift a manual transmission. Because this car is basically a stick shift car that happens to be shifted automatically, there is some hesitation starting in first gear from a dead stop in slow traffic. This is not a car to use for commuting to work if you have a long commute in very heavy, slow moving rush hour traffic. If you have no traffic and you just floor the gas pedal from a dead stop, the dual clutch has no problem with a very quick acceleration to whatever your top speed target. It will really surprise you the first time you really need the power. I sure was very surprised and very happy to know I got a free high performance car when I thought I just got a high mpg sedan. The Android Auto gave me excellent free navigation through my Motorola smart phone and enjoyed my chosen songs from my Spotify playlist through the cars excellent speakers, also coming through my smart phone. There is nothing that is bad about this car. I would have preferred a hatch back like a Prius and I wanted to buy the new Hyundai Ioniq but that car was not discounted because it had just been introduced and new models get full msrp list price. I figured that I will never save enough on gas if I had bought the Ioniq at full price compared to the $5600 less I paid for the Elantra Eco even if gas goes to $5 per gallon."

Alvin M., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I just like the overall experience at the price. It’s reliable and stylish."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent handling, noticed this feature when driving on mountain passes."

John N., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I find the the car drives great, but I find the steering loose. The car doees not always track properly."

David S., NC (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"poor acceleration on steep hills."

Anonymous, AL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"doesn't have enough power when trying to merge with traffic on 401 highway. Poor passing power you better be sure you have enough room to pass."

Wayne B., ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This vehicle rides very nicely while still being capable slicing into a curve. It's no BMW, but it offers the ride comfort of a Toyota Corolla with the handling of a Ford Fusion, a nice combination."

Robert R., MN (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"SMOOTH ACCELERATION, USING ECON MODE MOSTLY: HAVE LOTS OF UPHILL GRADES IN MY EVERYDAY DRIVING - HAVE AUTO TRANSMISSION - SMOOTH SHIFTING ON THE GRADES TOO. HANDELING EASY, NOT TOO TIGHT, DEFINATELY NOT LOOSE. I'M NOT PULLING TO EITHER DIRECTION OR HAVE ANY WOBBLE. VERY PLEASED HERE."

Keith D., NH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"everything on this car works fine accept the phone part. It does not understand or it can't hear you. It is pane in the butt."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is great, even better in sport mode."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Amazing acceleration! Has been helpful in many situations. Braking is also exceptional. The driving modes really do change performance. I have been tempted to consider trying it on a road course. (I would not be here had I followed thru!)(My wife would not be happy at all)"

Dan W., IL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Transmission seems to hesitate in ECO mode when increasing speed. I haven’t driven in the SPORT mode. Or checked the transmission. It handles good for me."

Brenda W., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I am pleased with the handling and acceleration of this car."

M M., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"* Acceleration is adequate; but could be improved. * Tiny bit noisy in highway. * Overall handling and safety features are A+."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good acceleration and precise steering wheel."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Goid all riund for tge money"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is not very fast but it is acceptable. The torque is good for most passing needs and makes up for the low hp. It handles well and I love all of the safety features that came with the car - the rear cross traffic alert, the blind spot monitor, crash protection, etc. The navigation screen is very well thought out. The mpg is excellent so far."

Thomas M., WA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Smooth and quick"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra ride and handling are great, but on California's concrete freeways that have the groove payment, it feels like you are hydroplaning, even though the conditions are dry."

Kenneth T., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The acceleration is acceptable and the handling is very good on the smooth and straight Florida roads."

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are comfortable for short, local trips. Tend to be uncomfortable on long trips."

Roger G., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The seams started to stretch right away and I am not a big person! I was not thrilled about that."

James H., MN (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Much road noise. Seats could be more comfortable."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Road noise is really bad and getting worse all the time."

Randy R., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"comfortable ride however the road noise is a bit excessive"

Spencer C., ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very uncomfortable. In fact if you apply the brakes hard there is a piece in the seat back that pushes into your back."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great riding car. Thicker glass and almost 400 ft of adhesives used in it's construction aid to the solidity and quietness of the Elantra."

"Seats are hard and slick. Car is quiet."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car feels much more like a bigger car. It is very comfortable."

Wayne B., ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Comfortable for long periods. Easy to adjust. Supportive."

Douglas B., OH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Vehicle is noisy inside when driving highway speeds"

Ronnie C., OH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"definitely not a car for a taller person. Because of the narrow contour of the side windows I often bump my head getting in the vehicle"

Art C., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Rides VERY hard over bumps and rough roads. I inflate the tires a couple pounds under the recommended pressures to soften it up a bit."

Kenneth B., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"First cloth seats. Will never have cloth seats again! They look awful! Seats are a little narrow - overall comfortable."

J W., PA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This is a very comfortable car and is remarkably smooth in its operation. The seats are very good, although lateral support is not the best. The engine noise is well suppressed except under hard acceleration - but that is fine with me. I want to hear the engine on acceleration and do not understand why reviewers complain about this. The only negative aspect of this car is the road noise on certain pavements. It can seem horrendous because the car is so quiet in all other circumstances."

Thomas M., WA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Car is small so it is not easy for me to get in. Have to lower my head"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Overall noise level aren't acceptable"

Luis H., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I'm very satisfied with all aspects of our Elantra, including seats, noise, and ride."

David C., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"For a small car the ride is quiet. The car came with heated cloth seats. Excellent in winter. Fast heating. The ride is responsive and the car handles well in all weather."

Barry J., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are very comfortable. Lumbar control on driver seat is excellent. Perforated seats are cool in summer. Ride is somewhat harsh on bumpy sections of roadway. Very quiet."

James P., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Comfortable even on 300 mile trips-especially for a small car with 2 people-and with the gas mileage, it is terrific-plus the value we got using the CR True car buying program"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The passenger seat cannot be raised. I need it higher when I am passenger. Hyundai still needs to do more to control road noise, little improvement since my 2009 Hyundai Elantra. Seat lumber support is great but actual seat comfort not as good as 2009 which seemed to be a bit longer in thigh area and didn't have a hard ridge just before the knees."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"use of low profile noisy tires not a good choice for the "Limited" model"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I'M LARGE AND TALL. SEAT FITS AND SUPPORTS WELL. ADJUSTMENTS TO SEAT AND STEERING PERFECT -- SO MUCH SPACE. MOST OF ANY, ( I'M 64 - AND I MEAN ANY!) CAR I'VE EVER DRIVEN. CAN GET IN AND OUT OF CAR EASILY - BIG DEAL FOR ME DURING HIP AND KNEE ISSUE. SHOCKS EXCELLENT. SMOOTH ACCELERATION. BRAKES HAVE MINOR NOISE ( A LITTLE CONCERN HERE - WILL BE WATCHING - LIVE IN RURAL AREA - I BRAKE VERY LITTLE AND THE CAR IS SO NEW. )"

Keith D., NH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"A finely tuned suspension and nimble steering do wonders for this car. Quiet in operation and responsive on the road, Hyundai has done marvels with the Elantra over the past ten years."

Anonymous, NS (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very satisfied, but find the suspension not quite as good as previous Elantra models owned. A slightly rougher ride."

I C., ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I wish there was less road noise --- my only objection with the car."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Noisy"

W H., ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The passenger seat is not as comfortable or adjustable as the driver's seat."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Front seats have no lower back support (base model). There is a lot of road noise."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I'm 5'11" 230lbs, seats need more side bolsters."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"There is more seat and headroom in an Elantra than in any other vehicle of comparable size of another brand. In addition to HyundI i researched and physically test drove Toyota, Mazda, and Nissan. Hyundai was more comfortable to me than all of those. The Elantra drives and rides solid. It feels like a larger vehicle with the economy of a small car."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is a very noisy, unsettled ride when going over even the slightest bumps. There is a great deal of road noise. And this is the Limited model. I could only imaging how bad the lower level trims are. It is a shame because otherwise this is a well-styled, good looking car with a lot for the money."

Rolando T., DE (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Slightly more road noise than I would prefer but otherwise a good road experience with all the safety factors."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car is noisy. It's a stiff ride."

Holly S., NC (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car is remarkably refined - a much better car than my 2014 Elantra. The seats are good - if not quite as good as the Accent seats but still I am pleased. There is no engine noise unless you really push the engine hard. That is good design in my opinion. You should hear the engine under hard acceleration. It is a very quiet car except on the really badly rutted freeway lanes of Portland when road noise intrudes."

Thomas M., WA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"3 driving modes, quiet ride"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car has the worse ride, over bumps or rough roads, of any car I've ever owned. If I had driven it a bit more on rough roads before I bought it, I would have looked for a different car. They recommend 36 pounds of air in the tires (probably to improve the gas mileage rating) but I keep the pressures at about 30 (cold) so the ride is a bit more tolorable. For the size tires on this car, and the car's weight, I think 30 is fine and 36 is WAY too high."

Kenneth B., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very quiet for a compact lower price auto. Handles well and suspension is tight but not jarring. Great on normal roads."

Margaret S., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Nothing. Great car"

Geoffrey B., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The front seats are not as comfortable as I would like."

Benjamin B., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"front seats very uncomfortable , engine loud noise when pushing it into traffic or passing another car, ride is uncomfortable on uneven roads"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The seats are "comfortable enough" but the overall road noise at highway speeds is a bit too high for my liking. The ride is good, but the car needs more insulation or sound buffering to reduce road noise."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"your report claims noise in the car, this car is very quiet as good as my 09 lexus, it recorded 43.3 mpg on a recent highway trip, seat are very comfortable."

RAUL P., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Although the car is noon my experience with my 2013 Elantra leads me to think that the 2017 Elantra is going to be just as good or better I am very satisfied with this model"

BERNARD S., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The head rest could be a little lower. I'm 5'5", and it's a little high for me. The road noise is a little more noticeable than on the Sonata I had before this."

DANIELA F., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Passenger seat can be elevated by a hand pump which my wife likes because she is vertically challenged."

NELSON E., OH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Took a 2000 mile trip & ergonomics of seats (i suppose) gave me total comfort. Did not have leg discomfort, back comfort-- totally comfortable the entire trip. Not the best car for tall people though."

MICHELLE L., WA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"SEATS ARE LEATHER AND VERY COMFORTABLE. CLIMATE CONTROL IS EXCELLENT. QUIET. RIDES HARDER BECAUSE OF LARGER TIRES"

E G., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great gas mileage"

WILLIAM W., TN (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is a fantastic well built car, has all the bells and whistles. Very comfortable to drive and get in and out with the memory seats is great. The car does a good job at keeping outside noises out. But most of all I love the mpg in the city around 31 and on the highway 40+."

KEN W., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are a bit stiff"

BILLY C., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Pre-set is perfect for my short stature. Quietest vehicle ever! Beautiful design, easy and reliable handling and responsiveness. Easily the best care I have ever owned."

"Economy and reliable"

Luis H., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Hyundai often offers steep discounts on slower selling models. My new Elantra Eco was discounted $4000 below msrp. I bought it for its excellent hiway fuel economy and it has absolutely delivered better mpg than my Prius V wagon on the hiway. It is a lot quieter riding on the hiway. But the most amazing unexpected benefit is the ample power on the hiway from the tiny 1.4 liter turbocharged engine. I am able to pass trucks or cars at 60 mph so fast with no big roar from the engine like I am used to with my Prius and still not affect my high mpg numbers. This Eco model acts more like my previous high performance cars which included a 1986 Saab 9000 turbo, 1997 BMW M3 4 door sports sedan, and 1998 Volvo T5 turbo wagon and yet it is marketed as a fuel efficient compact sedan that delivers 40 mpg on the hiway. So whoever buys this model will get a free high performance sports sedan hiding in an economical compact car. My car has averaged 44.4 mpg over the 9300 miles of ownership so far, which is almost the same as the 44.9 mpg over 21000 miles of ownership for my 2012 Toyota Prius V wagon."

Alvin M., TX (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Hyundai supports handicapped drivers access to driving by contributing $1000 for adaptive controls."

"When I purchased this vehicle the dealer took over $6000 off the MSRP or sticker price without a trade. This is the definition of the word value. You would never get that much off a Toyota or Honda"

Anonymous, NH (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"We used the CR car buying program-end price/value was terrific-loves the car, the gas mileage and value. Is our 2nd Elantra"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This is an excellent vehicle for the price. We have the "Limited" model with the technology package. There are many important safety features that are very important. We are VERY impressed with this car. Historically we have had Honda, Acura, and Infiniti. The Hyundai Elantra is a much better value."

James P., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"this car is a very good value and I love it, but I formerly leased a 2014 Elantra that had a lot of bells and whistles on it and this one doesn't have those things, like heated seats, cruise, etc. yet it cost me almost as much as the one that had more features. Didn't like that."

Kari D., SD (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"I'm tiny, only car I've found that adjusts to my size perfectly."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent car, Excellent MPG's (I can get 65+ MPG when hyper-miling). The seats are not that comfortable but it was bought for my son and he likes it."

Jeff M., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Overall, I remain impressed with this Hyundai given the price paid and it's performance. It has been a solid performer to this point in its life."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Lots of value for the money. Lots of "extras" (like front seat heaters). We only paid about $2000 more for the 2017 than we did for our traded-in 2004."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car is an unbelievable value but especially if you drive back roads. When trying to hyper-mile I was able to get 67 MPG over a 45 mile course and I can get 45-50 almost anytime. The seats are not as comfortable as I need but for my son it is just fine."

Jeff M., FL (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"A stylish, reliable small car. Excellent gas mileage. Is missing some features that you would think were standard (no cruise Control) but I wanted a bare bones vehicle to save money."

"Since I own a Hyundai we got a great price on this vehicle. We paid $ 16,000 for the popular package equipped car. The car is still at the dealers lot."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Based on price this a real value vehicle. Has many of the latest high tech features such as blind spot detection, rear clearence detection and in addition great infotainment features such as navagation, bluetooth, bluelink and apple play. Really a great car fot the money."

"Depending on what Hyundai you go to you can get a better price with true car website."

BOB T., NY (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's a lot of car for the money."

JOHN L., MA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Our Hyundia Elantra was all new design for 2017. It is a very good value for the money and it has been worry free since purchase. The only thing I can think of is the car play app does not work with all android phones including my Samsung Galaxy Note5. The 2017 has a new engine and gearbox which work well together especially in Sport Mode that extends the shift points and keeps the motor at higher rpm for crisper responses in traffic. Very good choice for a sedan."

What Owners Say

"Love the interior compared to the 2016 model. The exterior styling is not as sporty as the 2016 model."

REECE T., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"The new styling of the 2017 Elantra pleases me it has a very nice look to it and I also like the layout of the interior as it has everything I wanted such as a moonroof leather seats navigation heated seats rear camera"

BERNARD S., CA (2017 Hyundai Elantra)

"Don't like the "aggressive" grille styling"

DOUGLAS H., CO (2017 Hyundai Elantra)
