Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2011 Hyundai Tucson owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"We had the back up camera replaced at about 63000 miles. Hyundai was nice enough to replace it under warranty even though we were out of the warranty period"

Michael M., OH (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Camera started working intermittently and now has stopped working completely"

David K., CA (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Camera went black but no problem found with camera and problem resolved at dealership somehow without any actual repairs"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Hyundai Tucson 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Cold weather"

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"freezes, disappears, or stops working. They don't tell you about the reset button until it happens"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Frequently when i first start the car the display screen will not open but just shows a random raster scan. sometimes it comes back in a few minute, sometimes well over half an hour. Dealer cost to fix/replace ($500) too expensive to worry about. Not really a safety issue except somewhat distracting, In any case even when it is functioning properly, the location and layout of the screen almost always makes it very difficult to read because of glare problems"

Nancy S., VA (2011 Hyundai Tucson 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Cold weather"

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen that displays the radio is blurry and can not be read."

Anonymous, (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"There was a recall on the 2011 Hyundai vehicles because the screens went black unless vehicle has been ran for quite some time. When I asked about it, I was told my particular vehicle. Found it odd, that it was doing the exact same thing as the others, but they wouldn't fix it. While Hyundai seems to have a good warranty, the things that go out, should not. Switches, Display screens, etc."

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The plug for the mp3/smart phone, stops working"

Anonymous, FL (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Like I said previously, nothing electronically worked"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"Nothing in the electronic system worked. They had to reboot the whole system"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel controls

"Speed control doesn’t always work, you have to push button more than once"

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"The sensors for the ABS and Antiskid systems wore out. It cost over 1000.00 to replace sensors and rear spindles( the sensor strip is mounted on them). Brakes are fine, just 1000.00 for sensors!"

Anonymous, NY (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"I live in Ohio and the slide pins on the calipers corrode and stick due to the brine/salt they use during the Winters. It's not a only Hyundai problem though. I have a 2012 Ford Fusion company car and the same issue occured. In fact the Ford was w"

Michael M., OH (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Calipers were seized and needed releasing. Not covered under their "5 year warranty" which is a bit of a fraud"

Brian B., BC (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"it stopped working and needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Worn brakes caused squeaking noises due to worn pads and caliper adjustment"

John V., PA (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"I thought it should last longer"

Chester B., WA (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"This is the second total AC unit that has needed replacing. When it happens, you have to replace the entire AC compressor, hoses, condenser, fan, and coolant. This is even if you have preventative maintenance done. I am not sure if it is because I live in Las Vegas' brutal summers, but the cooling system is average at best, never reaching a comfortable cool unless it is turned all the way to low, maximum fan and on Max Cool. But even then, it is either too cold or not cold enough...never a sweet spot."

Anonymous, (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The A/C Compressor went out and since it is intertwined with the A/C Condenser it meant that both had to be replaced. Along with the A/C Expansion value."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"AC did not cool. Diagnosed as bad compressor which was replaced"

Paul S., TX (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C Compressor failed around 80,000 miles and was replaced by dealer"

Michael W., AZ (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to replace A/C compressor and evaporer"

Marc B., NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Blower (fan) motor

"Motor was squeaking. replaced"

Stefan B., SC (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Condenser

"The A/C Compressor went out and since it is intertwined with the A/C Condenser it meant that both had to be replaced. Along with the A/C Expansion value."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A/C stopped cooling/"

Kerry W., TX (2011 Hyundai Tucson 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Evaporator

"No A/C warm air coming into system"

Marc B., NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Refrigerant leaks

"The air conditioner started running warm, after 6 years of ownership. Glendale Hyundai added refrigerant. Now the air conditioner puts out cool air, as expected"

Robert A., CA (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"City driving. Loud grinding sound and slipping of gears. Vehicle stalled from not going into gear. Engine running fine. Major leak under engine area. Contacted Hyundai 800 number. They arranged tow to dealer and vehicle repaired next day. No loaner r"

Anonymous, KS (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission Cooler line failed"

Anonymous, PA (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Gear selector or linkage

"This has been an on-going problem for 3+ years now whereby the car would not start, would not shift into our out of gear and would shift rough. Took it into the dealer 6 or 7 times for this, including 3 long distance tows, and they could not diagnose. In January 2019 it had been towed again and in frustration I started searching Google. To my surprise immediately up popped YouTube video after YouTube video with the same problems on this vehicle or other similar Hyundai models. I then looked up and found a Technical Service Bulletin from Hyundai on the very issue and description of what I was bring it in for each time. The dealer did not acknowledge that I assisted but within 15 minutes of my directing them to the TSB I received notice that they were able to replicate the problem after they had the car for a week straight and were unable to replicate the problems."

Derek C., MI (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"actually not rough shifting ,it would bare move the because tramsmission ,leaked rapidly from the transmission"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"When I drive in reverse in a slanted surface (i.e. driveway), stop the vehicle, and change the gear back to drive and start driving forward, sometimes the transmission kicks and the car jumps a little bit forward. I had this problem at 9,000 miles, and the dealer changed the transmission under warranty. I have started noticing this problem again ever since passing the 93,000 miles"

Kouhyar M., OH (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"This has been happening for at least five years. The slipping occurs intermittently, depending on the speed of acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The car is 10 years old and some paint faded, but I had it corrected touched up"

Anonymous, (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"A piece of roof trim, rear left, kept coming off, despite gluing. Once it blew off on the freeway. I replaced it, and Gorilla glued the life out of it. It's still there, just fine, after 3 years."

Anonymous, CA (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Clear coat peeling"

Anonymous, MO (2011 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Clear coat peeling off back of roof top. Plus paint on roof racks peeled; I had them removed. It began approx. 4 years ago and increasingly has worsened. Problem not resolved."

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The top luggage rack has two cross bars that were painted black and started peeling. Hyundai would not help in anyway since I had exceeded the 5 year warranty (by two months). The car had very low mileage. I had them removed by a body shop at a low cost"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"More rattles than squeaks. Mostly in the rear part of the suv. It is a very rough ride; not smooth at all; feels every nook and cranny"

Anonymous, NJ (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"kept hearing a knocking noise toward front of car and then a rattle in the back. Per dealer service, front noise was due to ball bearing problems and back noise was due to the muffler starting to give out."

Michael K., IL (2011 Hyundai Tucson GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Wind noise

"Outside wind noise is probably a pet peeve of mine and the reason I rarely drive it. Good car, just a great deal of road, engine, and wind noise."

Anonymous, (2011 Hyundai Tucson GL 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
