Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Display screen goes blank

"About 2 years after I purchased the vehicle, I started having issues with the screen for my satellite radio/CDplayer unit. It would be unreadable. Now, in the last year, it will go blank. It's a problem that comes and goes. Also, at times, I will press a saved station button, and the CD player will come on. There seems to be some sort of short in the satellite radio system. It's annoying at the time, but nothing I would pay money to get fixed, since the radio will still work, it just doesn't display."

Steering wheel vibration

"made noise, swayed while driving, uneven tire wear. Important to note that I originally took my RAV4 to the Toyota dealer where it was purchased. They insisted there was, no problem other than bad tires. The problem persisted. I took the auto to a private mechanic and the problems were discovered and rectified. "Wheel bearings are supposed to last a lifetime. My front driver side wheel bearing and hub assembly had to be replaced because it was causing a cyclical sound when driving and dealership mentioned that it was failing. The good thing is that replacing the part fixed the noise issue and the vehicle drives better. Since then, I have had another issue with - once in a while - vibrations from the driver side of the car. Not sure if wheel bearings or some other component. Took to dealership and they mentioned it is because of ice trapped. That looks like the culprit but I would know for sure only after driving the car through this summer. In any case, it is unsettling to know that a car you purchased because of its apparent reliability ratings has started to show problems at just 7 years of its life."

"Paint started peeling between windshield and sunroof about 10 months ago. Got online and saw that it was a common problem with the pearl white paint. The dealer or Toyota refuses to help. With the number of cars with this problem it's obviously a manufacturing defect. I don't want to spend the $1500 to have it fixed not knowing if the peeling may occur somewhere else. Can you help"

Larry T., NC (2011 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The dealership garage indicated it was an emissions problem but it wouldn't affect the car's performance. It hasn't but the check engine light and auto LSD light comes on when car is turned on so if there is another engine problem, I won't know it till it's fixed. Its too expensive to fix with quoted repair cost >$1000."

Driveline vibration

"I briefly mentioned the vibration in my previous issue. Again, it happens only once in a while and then goes away if I slow down. It has happened only during the winter so far. The dealership has found no issues with the car in regular multi-point inspection and one service personnel mentioned it is probably because of ice trapped. I am not so sure of it. Since I cannot reproduce consistently, I cannot take it to service either. So sort of stuck. The vibration has happened at both low and high speeds. I am very concerned about the quality of the suspension and wheel systems of this SUV. But probably its the ice and the issue won't happen again."

Roshin K., MA (2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Driveline vibration resulted in the replacement of a drive shaft and the U-joint at the rear differential. That was more than a month ago, and, so far, the A/C seems to be working properly and no green fluid has been observed. There was no charge for the service at the private shop or the dealer."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"The failure of the torque converter in this vehicle is a known issue by Toyota. Google RAV4 Torque Converter and look at the results. Toyota lists no maintenance interval for changing the transmission fluid in this vehicle. It is the varnishing of this fluid that causes the torque converter to fail. I am extremely disappointed that Toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem or to correct it through a recall or discounted maintenance due to their mistake. I have been quoted a repair price of $5000 to repair my torque converter which is the approximate trade in value of the vehicle. Because of this experience and Toyota's unwillingness to stand by their product this is the last Toyota product I will ever purchase. I have historically purchased Toyota and Honda products because of their excellent reliability and the manufacturer's commitment to customer service. Now that they have moved away from that commitment I will spend my money on brands that will."

Douglas M., VT (2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission began slipping at random times. Wasn't sure what the problem was but took it to a Toyota dealer who said the transmission needed to be replaced. The replacement was covered by the warranty"

"Known issue with noise - covered under warranty"

Anonymous, VA (2011 Toyota RAV4 Limited 3.5-L V6)

"Started with a cyclic whoop, whoop, whoop noise. Transmission fluid found to be burnt, dirty. HOWEVER, maintenance manual stated nothing about changing tranny fluid. So never done. Have done ALL maintenance in manual at dealer. Dealer recommended rebuild. $5500. Seriously? Since is CVT, this is expensive. Independent mechanic stated with tranny fluid change or flush can go for awhile, but rebuild in future. We still have an 2002 Accord 185 K and 2003 Civic 138K no problems, but this 2011 Rav4 is facing repairs close to selling value."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Toyota RAV4 Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"From Jan 18 to preset, MPGs have dropped from solid average of 23 to 18, so far. An independent mechanic indicated the rear differential was growling. A differential growl is covered by a Toyota enhanced warranty, but a Toyota dealership diagnozed the transmission as the problem, and recommended it be replaced. An independent transmission specialist indicated they could find nothing wrong with the transmission. Have taken no action at this point."
