The Cherokee finally gives Jeep a small SUV for those who want the brand's trail cred but don't want to pay Grand Cherokee prices. And while it does offer a lot of workhorse capability for this class, it fails to get a lot of the day-to-day basics right. The list of flaws is long. Performance and fuel economy from the four-cylinder engine is pathetic.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"With the 4 cyl, it seems slightly under powered, but is still adequate."

Herb K., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"good acceleration, crisp handling"

G M., CT (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The emergency brakes saved us from an accident on a drive to Las Vegas, going 80 mph"

Daniele B., CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Solid!"

Caroline W., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Drives comfortably. Gets very good gas milage. About 24 in the city and up to 28 hwy. feels like it has lots of reserve power."

Walter P., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Not enough power"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"It's quick enough to handle all kinds of driving requirements such as merging into traffic on the express ways."

James V., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Good acceleration"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration is good but the automatic transmission software could be improved. It goes through several gear ratios during heavy acceleration."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Drive line has lateral shake at low speeds under load especially when turning right and/or going up hill. Engine and transmission works great on the highway and fuel economy is good. Vehicle has lots of power for merging and passing."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"do not like the feature stop/start even though it can be turned off by a button"

ANTHONY C., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"transmission shifting non-linear and slow to downshift. some reprogramming of transmission shift points might be desirable"

GARY L., NM (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Handling is decent. Acceleration and power is below expectation. Sport mode helps but affects gas mileage. For the resulting milage, we would have chosen a v6 engine."

PAUL R., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I purchased the V-6 upgrade and most pleased with overall acceleration and handling"

JON M., TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The V-6 and 9 speed transmission are awesome, on hills you don't feel it shift down and it keeps the cruise control within 1 mph. With 9 speeds it is quick."

RON M., NE (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very nice size to drive yet I still sit high to see the road ahead."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The V6 is powerful enough for pulling our big trailer and acceleration is outstanding. But I still get 29 mpg average in all around driving."

JEFFREY G., WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Power good. nine speed transmission good, but never seen 9th gear kick in; not sure what it is meant for. Power and transmission action is a little out of sync at times."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The vehicle drives like a dream in the snow. I feel very safe and that is a feeling that is worth a lot."

KATIE S., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Sometimes seems to almost chug a few times on acceleration after I get gas. Take off can be sluggish but I expected this with my engine type."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Quite a few times while going around a corner and stepping on the gas it does nothing until it figures out what gear it supposed to be in. This 9 speed transmission is crap!"

ROBERT K., MO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Handling initially took some time to get used to, but after several thousand miles is intuitive and forgiving. I really appreciate the 270 or so HP and loads of torque--and the nine-speed tranny shifts easily and almost without notice."

ROSS F., CO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"At times the acceleration feels sluggish"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"It handles great and the ride is nice but the 4 cylinder engine can feel sluggish at times."

THOMAS E., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"2.4 engine doesn't have the acceleration I'd like in the altitude of mountains"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"My Jeep is a 6 cylinder and it has great pick up upon entering a highway."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I am not happy with the excelleration. It has great pick up but it feed very jerky going through the gears. Not at all smooth while shifting. The suv seems stiff and is difficult to handle at slower speeds."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Can tell it is only a 4."

Anonymous, AR (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd occasionally. Dealer says problem with 9 speed transmission but no fix."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Great handling on road for a true 4x4 off road vehicle. Driving the Pentastar V6 is a pleasure -- very responsive."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"plenty of zip when you need it and very sure footed."

Anonymous, NE (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"3.2 loter V-6 is very responsive. Handling is great in all conditions including heavy, deep snow."

James B., PA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"it drives and handles great"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very quick and handles well. Inspires confidence on the road. We took CRs advice and opted for the V6 engine. Glad we did."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I have total control on different surface and at all speed."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"acceleration is delayed and choppy"

Andrew D., WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Handles very well."

James M., PA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration is average, handling is ok but could be better."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration with the 2.4L 4 cylinder is slow. I wish we would have purchased the B6"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"6 cylinder provides adequate power and comfort over a long drive"

Anonymous, SC (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Acceleration is sluggish compared to the rest of the ride. Other than that it handles great. Light quick fast."

Serena H., NM (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

JON M., TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"so far so good only had car two weeks."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

DONALD M., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I love the beautiful sunroof. It is a very comfortable ride."

KATIE S., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Front seats are exceptionally comfortable. Driver's seat controls allow for fine adjustments. Climate controls are easy to set and very visible. Navigation and radio controls are very easy to use with little or no learning required."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Seats are a little short and narrow"

FRED S., NC (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Seats comfortable but power seat moves in arc so adjustments are complicated. Vehicle is noisy. Climate control is noisy. Stop-start is annoying."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Interior noise is greater than I expected."

DAVID C., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Extremely comfortable seats. Exudes quality and solidness. Ride is very good, especially for an SUV."

JEFFREY G., WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The seats are very comfortable. The unit handles and drives like a car."

Michael J., TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Ride is comfortable, but can be bouncy on certain roads. Comfortable seats, fairly quiet ride. Noise level is low."

Bruce M., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Comfortable front and back seats. Smooth ride. Great handling. No outside noise"

Serena H., NM (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very comfortable and quiet inside. Much nicer than I expected or the CR review said. It's a great car to ride in and gets great mileage on long rides -- 31-33 MPG."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very comfortable. Seats adjust well. Heated. Steering wheel tilts and pulls out for better arm comfort. I feel like I'm driving a smaller car. The level of outside noise is average, this could be an area they could improve on. My Jeep is a car I can go shapping in or take on vacation..verastile!"

James W., VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Comfort"

Ambrose K., NJ (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"very loud for road noise and it sounds like the window is down but it is not down. The ride is awful. You go over a bump and you feel it and know it. Hit a rise in the road and the car jumps to the side."

Anonymous, AR (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The comfort is great. I drive about 200 miles a day and it is very comfortable."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The seats are like lazy boys! Very comfy and relaxing seats. The ride is rather absorbant for a suv in this class"

Douglas A., NJ (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Seats give excellent support. Drivers side very easy to adjust."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Drivers seat is very comfortable. Use heated seat constantly for my bad back"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Loud engine noise at highway speeds. Very annoying. Seats are not very comfortable. Ride is not very smooth. Visibility when making turns is difficult for both adult drivers due to extra wide window frames."

Robin G., TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I have a bad back, and this is the only vehicle I can drive for a long distance"

Robert D., NJ (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The sunroof makes a creaking noise all the time. The only way to make it stop is to crack open the sunroof/moonroof and then close it again. The noise will stop for about 20 minutes and then it starts all over again."

Doug B., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"seats are good, long drives in comfort."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"although the same size frame as our old (2007) highlander, it is much more cramped. inside is not roomy at all. the noise level is fair. the brakes have always been noisy. the seats give you as much room as a sports car (like the mustang) again; kind of cramped, but not uncomfortable. The ride is stiff. you hear and feel the bumps."

Robert N., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Front seats are comfortable and supportive for short trips and also for really long road trips. This vehicle has been on several very long road trips from Minneapolis. These include separate trips to Glacier NP, Colorado, and the Boundary Waters NP. Even at the end of long days these seats were great."

David S., MN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Extremely comfortable on long drives. No outside noise. Ride is very smooth."

James B., PA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The seats are comfortable & the ride is pretty good for an SUV. it feels very stable & road gripping. I think it could be a bit quieter on pebbly roads."

John R., NB (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I have the Limited model with v-6 engine and all wheel drive. This medel came with leather seats, power everything and very good performance and gas mileage."

Walter P., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"the jeep does what I need it to do... Has four wheel drive when needed and two wheel drive for regular road conditions. I also use it to pull my boat."

James V., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"good value compared to other similar vehicles"

G M., CT (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"This vehicle is an excellent value for the money and has many excellent safety features."

Anonymous, AL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Jeep Cherokee is a great vehicle. Not very fuel efficient on long trips."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Fit my needs nicely. Very good on gas. I do wish it had a larger gas tank."

DONALD M., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I feel I got a great value for the price. Very happy!"

GREGORY T., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The exterior and interior of this car is beautiful. Sporty yet luxury appointed. The ride is like that of a luxury vehicle (Ive owned the BMW X5) and the interior leather seats and dashboard are impressive. I also love the way it handles and drives with no play in the steering wheel. A beauty for the $$."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Good price compared to other SUV's"

RONALD J., IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"The TrailHawk was exactly what I was looking for in terms of off-road capability (I have a 24,000 acre ranch in Wyoming), towing, and power. Of course I would have liked paying less, but using the Consumer Reports car buying tools I saved several thousand over MSRP. No regrets."

ROSS F., CO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"poor quality"

Daniel M., GA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"For less than $40,000 I got a true off road vehicle that is comfortable on the road"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Very happy with comfort,,appearance, mileage"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Good value for the money with the limited model with V6 engine."

Bruce M., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"We priced other vehicles in the same general class as the Jeep. For what the Jeep offers, both on and off road, plus it's comfort level and MPG, we paid less for our Trailhawk than anything that I saw that was comparable!"

James W., VA (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Trade-in value of my 2010 Jeep Patriot was very fair and end of year on the lot discount accounted for a very fair price to finance"

G M., CT (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"a great vehicle"

Anonymous, NE (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"I love the rugged yet refined look that this vehicle has"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"I think the styling inside the car is really sharp. There's contrast stitching on the seats, and a lot of little conveniences, such as hidden storage under the passenger seat cushion, and cubbies for holding things. It's also nicely appointed, such as having a regular plug and several USB slots. I've had the car less than a month, so I haven't been through winter with this car, but I am excited about having a heated steering wheel!"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Sleek lines and front end design are unique."

MICHAEL J., MN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"Bad front end and rear view styling. It reminds me of a Fiat Panda."

DAVID C., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"the shape of the front of the vehicle"

ANTHONY C., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

"It is a different looking vehicle"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)
