This version of the Grand Cherokee is cramped and noisy. It also lacks comfort and agility. Handling is unimpressive, though secure. Off-road, however, the Grand Cherokee shines.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Tight suspension so it corners flat even when you enter a curve or corner a "little" fast. Impressive acceleration especially when needed on traffic. I feel safe in it."

TONY F., WA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"best performing engine ever owned hooray for Mercedes. one of best overhead cam v8's ever made will probably go over 200000 miles easily"

Anonymous, OH (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Very good off road performer that will amaze you at where it will go. Good hiway handling and performance as well."

P C., NV (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"electric trouble"

DONNIE T., TX (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Bad: Poor gas mileage and handling can be somewhat sloppy. Michelin tires improved handing & ride significantly. Good: The old straight-6 engine is very reliable giving good power & acceleration. While the V8 would have done better in this category, the gas mileage would have suffered."

Anonymous, NC (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"V8. Good acceleration"

Jon Y., TX (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The 4.7 liter High Output V/8 is amazing with power for quickly pulling out into traffic, and when necessary for other reasons. It reminded me of some hot muscle cars I drove in the 60's and 70's. The jeep handles very well in snow, ice, and rain conditions. Emergency braking is very good when the front brakes are in top condition."

Wendell M., WA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Poor acceleration, does not have enough power to pull cargo trailers."

Anonymous, AL (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Poor acceleration.Handles ok."

Anonymous, NC (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"It’s a beast just step on the gas in it goes. It’s a gas hog. It’s comfortable I got lots of headroom."

Harold H., MI (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"This is a utility car for me. My wider isn’t comfortable in it."

Anonymous, WI (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Acceleration and handling are very good Great car for driving long distances Cruise control works very well"

Anonymous, CO (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"I'm a big guy (6' 2", 350 lbs) and the Jeep is very comfortable for me to drive and the leather seats are still in good shape. I keep good Cooper tires on it and installed Monroe Sensa-Trac shocks in 2010. It rides nice. Handles great. But it is starting to show its age."

CLINTON W., KS (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The seats keep their shape and support over the long haul. 90k miles later and we still love the seats."

DEBRA M., FL (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"car is too high so seats are difficult to access"

Anonymous, NJ (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"most comfortable seats in car ever owned good to travel long distances in"

Anonymous, OH (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Great ride but for the age it's very good"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Seats are comfy. Rides great on freeway. Acceleration outstanding with v8"

MICHAEL L., AZ (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Noisy ride, angled foot well uncomfortable on long rides"

KYLE B., CA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Air noise. HARD RIDE ESPECIALY in rear seat."

Anonymous, PA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The 2002 Jeep GC is a pleasure to drive in all road and weather conditions. Like Consumer Reports said several times over the years, this Jeep has vague steering and is too choppy riding on slightly rough roads. Suspension could have been a bit softer. Road Noise is very irritating on long trips. The HVAC system broke down after 12 years. This required a $2,500 fix. The front brakes had failures starting after only 32,000 miles, and had to be replaced then, and again later at 48,000 miles, then again at 82,000 miles. Faulty calipers were the suspect mechanical pieces that caused the break downs."

Wendell M., WA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Easily the most comfortable auto seat I've ever had."

Gerard W., WI (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Seats are very very comfortable"

Anonymous, CO (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"year after year NO expense but brakes and tire."

TOM F., FL (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Lots of performance and hauling for the money. Breaks down a lot. Lot of parts break"

MICHAEL L., AZ (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"We bought this car in December of 2004, when the vehicle was three years old. We bought it used, but my husband was working for a car dealership and it had been taken in on trade, so he knew that it had very low mileage and had been kept in a garage. It is a V-8 model, so it's kind of a pig on gas, but it also has the factory-installed tow package, so it's a workhorse: It will go anywhere and pull anything. The drive train on this vehicle is has been excellent, but it came heavily loaded wit"

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Looks very nice even in the movies."

GERALD P., CA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"I am very satisfied with my Overland. Not too small. Not too big. Pleasing streamlined curves. Interior layout is convenient and good looking while remaining an affective back road cockpit. I've kept it 12 years as a result."

TONY F., WA (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"It looks like a box. The colors are military"

Anonymous, NJ (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Other than some rust on the under side of the rocker panel on the driver's side, the body is still in great shape. The WJ Jeep was very popular and there are still quite a few here where I live."

CLINTON W., KS (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The exterior of the car still looks like it is new."

Anonymous, TN (2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Looks good. can't tell that it's this old"
