This iteration of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is an improvement over its predecessor, but still scored lower than most of its contemporaries. Steering and handling were markedly better, but the Jeep wasn't particularly agile by the standards of the day. The 5.7-liter V8 engine is thirsty and failed to deliver the performance of some V6s in the class. Even average-height drivers complained about the lack of headroom.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"reliability"

Anonymous, FL (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"It has overdrive which kicks in over 60 and reduces the rpm's to below 2000. I calculate that If I drove this car 100% on the highway, the MPG would be far better"

Jim M., OR (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"A little sluggish on cold engine."

Anonymous, IN (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Never had any engine problems."

Fred M., CA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

JIM M., OR (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"We often take to the forests, not crazy 4 wheeling, but lots of time on poorly maintained National Forest roads and trails. It is extremely dependable. Also heavy snow and ice storms are common here and it has never let us down."

Anonymous, WA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The seats are not comfortable because the head rest is too far forward. Have to use a cushion behind my back to keep my head from touching head rest when riding or driving and don't want to lean my head back."

Anonymous, GA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"highway noise is excessive and wind noise with the roof rack is excessive"

Anonymous, WI (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Handles easily and accelerates smoothly"

Gregory S., CO (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Leather seats are heated, have lumbar support, multiple positions to find the exact seating position and the cushioning is still good."

Anonymous, NC (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Ride for hours and be comfortable"

Anonymous, MI (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"a/c system is made of poor quality parts it has cost over 2200.00 over the life of the car in repairs"

CARL R., FL (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"The front seats are terribly uncomfortable - riding or driving over 2 hours becomes an exercise in will-power over torture. I previously owned a 2003 Grand Cherokee and the seats (which Consumer Reports testers said bad things about) were great and I could drive all day. Not so the 2005 - not to mention that they started making the seats wider to accommodate people with overweight problems and I now slide around in it because it's too wide. Other than that, it's a great vehicle for the purpos"

RICHARD C., WA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"reliability, ride, seats, climate controlls, mechanics"

TORD H., NC (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Anonymous, CA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"I've put 203k miles on my Grand Cherokee and it is still going. It's driven long miles on the highway, been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and everywhere in between and is still running."

Joanna-Steve A., PA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"13 years later and the car is still running fine. That is good value for my money."

"Purchase price was competitive in the SUV market. Maintenance cost has been normal. Repairs have been few and overall very affordable. Insurance cost is low."

Anonymous, VA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"Given what we use it for and its dependability our cost per yr is $2460/yr. Other than tire and the recent differential work there are no other major expenses"

Anonymous, WA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"It has had mechanical problems in the past, but now with quite high miles it is running well. It does not even use any oil."

Anonymous, VA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

Anonymous, CA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"My dad bought this vehicle a month before he passed away. I have had several Jeep Grand Cherokees prior to this one. It continues to serve us well at over 120,000 miles with no major issues or repairs and only one recall - for a problem we did not encounter. Well engineered."

Anonymous, MA (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)

"I love my Jeep and will buy another one soon. It has required little maintenance other than routine oil changes, etc. Despite the constant downgrading of Jeep by Consumer Reports they are a very popular SUV and that has to mean something. My Jeep has been worth every penny that I paid for it and so will my next one."

Jerry G., NY (2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee)
