Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Kia Sorento owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"We replaced the radio in 2018 and after a year, the back up camera went in and out and then out all together. Neither covered by the warranty. The radio cost replacement cost varied by dealer which I found frustrating. The back up camera cost is over $250 and not worth it at this point."

"Rear camera seal failed and allowed moisture to cloud the image shown."

J T., IL (2013 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It is dangerous when UVO knocks out the camera for whatever reason it decides to do it. UVO SUCKS!"

Display screen freezes up

"Very often I will start to drive the car and the in-car information/entertainment screen starts up but stays on the logo. I have to turn the entire car off and restart it to fix the problem. Other times the music will start but the screen will be black. The backup camera has not worked for three years - two expensive to replace out of warranty."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Kia Sorento LX 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the "KIA" screen stays on for 2-4 minutes after I start the car up. Can't get radio, satellite radio, CD, or phone to work until the screen goes away"

Johnny L., NC (2013 Kia Sorento EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"2nd UVO replacement resolved the issue"

Anonymous, AB (2013 Kia Sorento EX 3.5-L V6)

Tim M., CO (2013 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"Radio went out right after the 5-year warranty expired on electrical devises and we got different quotes for replacement from different dealers (which in itself was frustrating). Replaced the radio and soon after the back up camera started going in and out. Currently has not worked in last 3 months. Electronics have not been reliable."

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"The vehicle went in for a MIL lol get on. Diagnosed needed a new catalytic converter. 3 weeks to get the part and then there were a lot of warning lights on when I got the vehicle back. They said it needed an alternator then they also replaced the NMC. When I picked the vehicle up and drove home the engine raced and many dash lights came on. Then they replaced the battery and other electrical components. When I got it back the ac did not work back to the dealer again. This has been a nightmare"

J J., ON (2013 Kia Sorento LX 3.5-L V6)

"there were electrica; problems w the vehicle and the dealer replaced the BCM driving away from the dealer the vehicle accelerated/engine high revs e;ectrical gauges lights etc failed vehicle was taken back to the dealer alternator battery and other items had to be replaced"

J J., ON (2013 Kia Sorento LX 3.5-L V6)

"Major problems started when the dealer relaced the o2 sensor. When power washing the engine compartment they shorted out the BCM. This resulted in a major electrical fault while driving home from teh dealer. warning and vehicle lights flashed, engine accelerated and would not decel. Could not turn the vehcile off. Returned vehicle immediatley to dealer. Over the next 2 weeks, the BCM, battery, Alternator, Climate control centre and numerous lights and electrical accessories had to be replaced. Electrical problems have continued since this issue. Really not sure that this is a vehicle problem or more a dealer issue. Have never gone back to this dealer"

Anonymous, SC (2013 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Left headlight burned out. Replaced it with a Sylvania Silver star bulb and it burned out in 12 days. The headlight wires had melted and it cost us $295 not covered on the extended warranty. Just got a recall about that headlight and maybe they will refund the costs. I have a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty and when the warranty did not cover it, I was very disconserted. this is probably the 5th recall we have had on this KIA. They are not as reliable as Kia portrays them to be. The engine and drivetrain are fine with no failures."

Seals and/or weather-stripping

Dale Z., CO (2013 Kia Sorento SX 3.5-L V6)

"at 75-80 mph in a driving rain on rt.95 water worked its way up the windshield post on the passenger side and dripped onto the passenger seat"

Michael R., FL (2013 Kia Sorento LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Squeaks or rattles

"There is a near constant squeak/ratttle on rear passenger side. At first we thought it was due to folding seats down and not properly relatching them back into place but that's not it. Sometimes I think maybe the door isn't properly latched but since we seldom use the back seat, that seems unlikely. Drives me crazy to ride in front passenger seat and have to listen to that racket."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Kia Sorento Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Started getting some squeaks and rattles on each side of the car. The sounds on the left side were attended and apparently was fixed with a piece that was installed?? This greatly reduced the noise but I can still hear from time to time. I have gotten used to it. Has not affected the performance of the car. The sounds on the right side of the car - near the belt is a recent event - last tree month. They ere checked on one occasion, but nothing was found. During a recent visit all the frame of car was checked and instances were fixed. The sound, again, was greatly reduced and I hear it from time to time. This sound disappears while on the road, have gotten used to it.I have gotten used to it. Has not affected the performance of the car."

"After the recall of the gear shifter, i have had to take my suv in multiple times for several days at a time the the Kia dealership is still unable to determine why there is so much noise & vibration & resistance when turning the steering wheel. All the parts to the steering wheel, steering housing & clock spring have been replaced. I strongly believe it is the misalignment of the steering housing to the transmission that is the cause of the issues. Dealership has no way of realigning this wit"

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"We were away 800 km from home, driving 100 km/hr on the highway with a handicap person aboard. Suddenly lights started showing around the odometer showing 67,072 km only. We were lucky to be able to use the blinking GPS to locate a dealership and get off the highway. We stopped safely against a cement curb as brakes failed, doors were unlocked manually. Car was towed away. Battery and alternator complete failure. We had to pay for the battery. However, the alternator was still under warranty. Two months later backup camera failed. Shortly after that, the cooling fan kept running while the engine was shut. We had to unplug it until the next day where it was fixed at the dealership. In addition this car had different recalls: oil pressure switch replacement, lambda 3.5 ECU update, shift lever component upgrade, panoramic sunroof rail reinforcement, shock absorber noise, application of additional anti-corrosion"
