Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The Soul lives in that increasingly gray area between hatchbacks and SUVs. A boxy, upright design gives it abundant interior space and super-easy access. But unlike a true SUV, the Soul is available only with front-wheel drive.

Distinctiveness remains another part of the Soul's appeal. The quirky styling reminds some of a surfer dude with wraparound shades. Special edition color packages add to the levity. There is also a generous list of options, many seemingly more fitting to a luxury sedan than a boxy econocar, including features like a heated steering wheel and ventilated front seats.

Anonymous, MA (2015 Kia Soul Plus 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It started burning oil around 80K miles. The dealer had us bring it in every 1K to check the oil and change it. After 4 instances they told us it was burning too much oil and needed to be replaced. The engine replacment was covered under warranty, but we had to provide copies of any maintenance done outside the Kia dealer. Car was inoperable for 3 weeks. The new motor has 3/36 warranty."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"My check engine light kept coming on. The fuel sensors were malfunctioning. By the time I got around to getting the car fixed they issued a recall. The catalytic converter was damaged due to high temperature exhaust. A dealer replaced the catalytic converter for free (under recall) and the engine computer was reset to avoid the high temp exhaust in future (per the recommendations of the recall.)"

Anonymous, (2015 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Engine was idling rough. Catalytic converter was replaced because of a recall. Repair took 4 weeks at the dealership."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"My check engine light kept coming on indicating problems with catalytic converter. A mechanic suggested that inferior quality gas had been the problem. I ran a CataClean fuel additive through my engine 6 times at $25 each over the course of a year. Usually the check engine light went off. Then it would come on later. Eventually a recall was issued. The sensors on the exhaust system allowed the temperatures of the exhaust system to be too high, which damaged catalytic converters. I had to go to the dealership for a new catalytic converter and reprogramming of the sensors. I had to make 3 trips to the dealership. The service manager had trouble getting the parts. Their online scheduler service would robocall me, text me AND email me with appointment reminders. In the meantime the service manager would not do his job and confirm the parts were in stock and override the robocalls, text and emails. All of the dealerships investment in automating the scheduling process were a total waste because they don't get the humans in service to talk to the humans in parts/inventory. I was very disappointed in the way the dealership treated me for this recall. I am relieved to know that I didn't cause the problem using cheap gas. I am grateful that KIA replaced the $1400 catalytic converter."

David W., (2015 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Repair was quite expensive ($1200) and I priced it around at a number of different shops"

Kevin S., WI (2015 Kia Soul Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Other/unsure

"UVO /iPhone pairing is an intermittent problem. Sometime I can't make calls, stream music, use GPS with iPhone. Taken to 2 dealers. No software update or malfunction. Blame Apple. Tried connecting with iPhone 5, 6, 6+ wired & wireless.OS 7, 8.0-8.3"
