By definition, luxury cars and SUVs are a cut above the mainstream. They promise comfort, performance, refinement, and the latest technology. But our road tests show that not all competitors shine in this premium arena.

Shoppers will find significant gaps between Consumer Reports’ Overall Score for the best luxury models and the worst.

    More on Buying a Car

This is what goes into our Overall Score.

Road-test performance: This score is based on more than 50 tests and evaluations conducted by our experienced staff at our 327-acre Auto Test Center.

Reliability survey results: Each year CR members report the problems they’ve had with hundreds of thousands of cars.

Owner satisfaction survey results: They’re based on the percentage of owners who say they would definitely buy the same car if they had to do it all over again.

Safety tests and equipment: All recommended cars must provide effective occupant protection in crash tests conducted by the government or the insurance industry (if they’ve been tested). Models with standard automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW) get bonus points.

With all these factors combined, as many as 40 points (out of 100 for any vehicle) separate the top from the bottom in our ratings in some categories.

Some of these models also have our Green Choice designation, which highlights the vehicles with the cleanest emissions.

To steer you in the right direction, we have identified the luxury cars, SUVs, and electric vehicles that perform best in each category.
