Small SUVs tend to be boring boxes, short on driving enjoyment or verve. But for enthusiast drivers looking for the versatility of a small SUV in a sporty-handling package, the CX-5 may be just what they're seeking. Very good fuel economy, agile handling, a roomy interior and a generous array of features put the Mazda CX-5 in the top tier of small SUVs, though a few lapses in refinement may annoy some buyers.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Most CX-5s come with a muscular 184-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine providing quick acceleration and an impressive 25 mpg overall with all-wheel drive. Quick, well-weighted steering and a taut suspension make the CX-5 one of the few small SUVs that can tackle tight curves with poise. A good-sized cabin and versatile cargo space are further pluses.

Mark W., OH (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“You have to push 10 buttons before it can be used inclduing several safety warnings, which are useless because you are distracted pushing buttons telling you that using GPS can be distracting. Voice sensing doesn't work well. Saying nearest place when it finally understands doesn't indicate direction so is useless unless the only concern is picking the closest one. Display was eratic but seems to have fixed itself when new car battery was installed”

Anonymous, SC (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“I once was "driving 168 mph" according to GPS unit. Maps are years behind highway changes. The display has gone blank, has spun around and around. Directions are consistently wrong. Can't find common addresses that my 16 year old portable Garmin can find. It is often inaccurate. The same unit consistently has Bluetooth pairing problems. Mazda knows they have this problem!! This was a straight up RIP OFF by Mazda. While I enjoy the mechanics of the car, I will NEVER buy another Mazda again becaus”

Anonymous, CA (2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, KY (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“repeated need to re-pair. inconsistent reliability”

Steve S., WA (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The phone pairing takes an extremely long time every time we get in the car in part because the system downloads the iPhone's entire phonebook every time. It is possible to interrupt this, but that involves distraction from backing out of driveway et”

“smartphone will not reliably connect, in spite of replacement of components and several service attempts”

Ken K., OH (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, ON (2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Mason K., WA (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“was assured at purchase any phone would work with system. mine doesn't. called mazda Bluetooth support. mine is not supported. suggested I purchase a new phone. paid for system that is not compatible”

Anonymous, MD (2014 Mazda CX-5 Sport Unsure)

“Bluetoo had to be reprogram twice”

Anonymous, CA (2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

“This could have been an Apple issue. We had a two-three week period when we could not pair our phones with the car after the new iOS was introduced. The issue eventually resolved itself”

Anonymous, MN (2014 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

“Mazda command system deleted out 2 cell phones and we were without cell service for weeks. The Dealer suggested, "bring the car in." We kept trying to re-initialize our cell phone Bluetooth and contacts and many weeks later it just re-appeared. Mazda command system for 2014 very sub par”

Tom H., CA (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Bluetooth disconects; very unstable”

Anonymous, QC (2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The system will connect then disconnect repeatedly during a phonecall, making it impossible to have a meaningful hands free conversation in the Mazda. This is Dangerous and incredibly inconvenient. It is a KNOWN problem by Mazda as they have an information sheet about this problem, and a unit at Mazda USA dedicated to responding to these frustrating issues. Based on my experience with Mazda electronics, the entire design crew should be fired, and I won't buy another Mazda”

Anonymous, OR (2014 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“The buletooth often stops working requiring the battery to be disconnected to reset the system. The dealer was unable to find the problem, when I took it in to have it fixed”

Anonymous, TN (2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Does not always work. Have had it in shop for repairs twice since owning car”

“Voice command system is not very good--voice recognition really needs work to be more effective”

Max W., KY (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Voice control is poor. Even simple commands like "Phone Call" are totally misinterpreted as "Pause". Still don't know how to recover from "Pause". Had to change my wife's name to "wife" so that I could call her”

Robert H., NE (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“Inaccurate. Asked for nearest police station and got a Wal-Mart located 4000 miles away. Does not function most of the time for navigation. Other task its a little better. Major disappointment with it and the Tom-Tom system itself”

Anonymous, AK (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“With navigation controls locked out while the vehicle is in motion, voice control is your only option to pulling over and stopping. Voice command recognition is completely useless. It simply does not work”

Two other examples: "Drive to Home Depot" is almost never understood, as is "Drive to Costco". One that I remember, I had to repeat "Drive to Costco" over 15 times before it understood that I wanted to find a Costco nearby”

Anonymous, QC (2014 Mazda CX-5 Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

“At a recent 40,00 km service Mazda told me my pads were worn out and should be replaced as well as my rotors. I feel the pads and rotors should have lasted way longer than this as I don't ride the brakes or tow a trailer. I had them replaced elsewhere at half the price”

Jennifer S., RI (2014 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

“after 28000 miles we had to replace the rotors on the back breaks. Was told that this was normal for this car...Think that is rather low mileage for this to happen. Where on the Honda it was at least twice the mileage before having to deal with brakes”
