Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Sticking to the basics, the Subaru Forester embodies the saying "a steady pace wins the race." It has always been a sound and practical vehicle, although its plain, unpretentious demeanor didn't help it stand out to car shoppers in this crowded field.

Subaru put function in front of form, resisting the contemporary trend toward making SUVs look like sports coupes with descending rooflines and curvaceous bodies. Instead, they focused on the fundamentals, with a space-efficient design, large windows and big square doors. That recipe resulted in the easiest access and the best view out of almost any vehicle. It also produced one of the roomiest rear seats in the class, with copious head and leg room.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Subaru Forester owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Eye sight system didn't work . Had to go several time to the car dealer until they replace it due to a defect"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The backup camera would just stop working. The Subaru dealer was not patient enough to test the problem and we had to go back to the dealer multiple times to rectify"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Occasionally the camera does not show an image but does show the vehicle track indicator lines. This does not happen all the time."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When shifting into reverse, the display screen for the backup camera is completely black, only showing the distance lines"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Subaru Forester)
CD player

"CD will play but get warm easy. Then start to skip or jump track"

Denis Y., CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CD wouldn't come out. We took it in and they told us that they couldn't fix it. We would have to spend $1050 to buy a new one! Or we could use a tweezers to try to "catch" the CD and pull it out. Ridiculous"

Scott S., CA (2014 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"cd no longer works"

Dwayne W., UT (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CD player would skip on uneven roads. Then quit working completely."

Robin S., AZ (2014 Subaru Forester)

"On numerous occasions CD player would not eject disc. Dealer serviced unit by air cleaning once, replaced unit second time with refurbished unit, refused to service/replace third time. We located an after market dealer/installer and replaced Subaru unit with after market unit, which has not experienced any problems yet."

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"intermittent. can't play cd's"

Anonymous, (2014 Subaru Forester 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Unit will no longer play any cd’s."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"I got the radio/cd player replaced and didn’t realize the CD player didn’t work until several month’s later, my warranty expired so I didn’t get it fixed."

Anonymous, ME (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The entire sound system crashed. I had let the battery drain, and when it was recharged, the sound system didn't work. Fortunately, it was before my warranty ran out, and the dealer replaced it for $100 deductible."

Anonymous, CO (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It'll play a song or two, but once I believed when it heats up, music will skip or eventually not play at all."

Denis Y., CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When CD eject button is pushed, disk barely clears dashboard slot entrance before machine pulls it back in, hence unable to eject disk. With quick reflexes one can grab the disk as it just barely exits with a pair of tweezers, but chances are the disk will be scratched. Problem occurs sporadically, but never when dealer investigates."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"CD player has become intermittent"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen difficult to see

"Wearing sunglasses, it is hard to see the back up camara screen"

Katy F., OR (2014 Subaru Forester)

"Sun makes so you can't see the backup camera"

Cathie I., CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The upper display screen sometimes gets a smoky band across it, diagonally Low/setting sun or other bright lights can "blind" the Eyesight system and render it inoperable (like sun on a garage door opener)"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Requires an engineering degree and you might still not figure out how to set clock connect phone to car etc"

Joel R., NY (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Can't see dash display when outside light is bright because of poor screen angle (non adjustable)"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Forester)

"Depending on the ambient light difficult to see when backing"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The display screen is so dim that it's virtually unusable while driving"

Anonymous, TN (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The back light on the display was not working as a result the screen could not be seen at all"

Anonymous, CT (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display for audio system is difficult to read (small characters, cluttered screen, poor contrast). Driver can't safely use - only the passenger operates it for safety"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Difficult to see because of sun glare--impossible to see if wearing polarized sunglasses. The screen for the backup camera is too small to be of much use"

Anonymous, NM (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen has a dark background and is difficult to see in conditions like sun light"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The screen is difficult to see in the day light"

Jack L., NV (2014 Subaru Forester 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Screen is highly reflective because of it's flush dash mount. Almost impossible to see"

Anonymous, ME (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"WHEN WEARING SUN GLASSES REAR CAMERA IS NOT CLEAR"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"It's difficult to see. Screen too small. its very hard to change channels on the Sirius satellite radio. Cheap system"

Anonymous, PA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium)

"I created sun shades for Nav/Sirius screen, which helps. It needs to be recessed like top screen. Top screen sometimes gets a "cloud" across (lower left to upper right). Dealer cannot reproduce this intermittent. May be heat???"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"When wearing sunglasses, the speedometer is difficult to read. I'll never buy another vehicle that has a dark background. It should be white (or some other light background). Additionally, I detest the fact that I'm forced to use the Metric system"

H S., ON (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Some of the touch screen buttons are intermittently not responsive"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"TEMP GAUGE FREEZES UP"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sporadically, the display screen will say 'automatic connection failed' and then come on again. This generally happens when it is raining or wet outside"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"Gas gauge became erratic and required replacement of the fuel pump and sensor. The fuel pump and sensor are a single unit incurring additional costs because the fuel pump was operational."

James D., MD (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"While driving with radio on, the screen will go blank. Also, while making a bluetooth phone call, bluetooth fails and call is terminated. Usually will not reset until ignition turned off and car restarted."

Alan W., OH (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen goes blank intermittently and sound goes silent including radio, CD player and navigation. Sometimes it comes back by itself, other times I must stop the car, shut it off and restart and the sound and screen come back. Appears to occur more frequently if radio volume is turned up."

Joseph K., NY (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Randomly, once a month or so, after about 1 minute after starting the car the Harmon Karden system reboots and starts playing where it left off. If I immediately either power off and on or switch to another audio source, the system operates normally. Otherwise, it reboots to the factory settings. The dealer swapped my unit for another new one, but it does the same thing. I think that this is a software error called uninitialized variable."

Lawrence B., MA (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the entire radio/nav/phone interface blanked out and was not usable."

Mark K., NJ (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Entire Nav/Radio module failed"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"when the nav system reset the time and preset radio stations were lost"

Larry C., SC (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Display screen for radio/cd/GPS goes very dark or blank. Reported to dealer -- could not 'see' problem - told me to bring back when it happened -- was unable to do that and eventually, the problem stopped happening"

SUSn D., MA (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Couldn't match Blue Tooth system to Iphone, had to purchase another system"

Diana D., ME (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Subaru radio constantly disconnects from the bluetooth interface. Cannot have both a bluetooth device and a usb device operating at the same time. The radio has been replaced, but the issue has not resolved"

William S., CT (2014 Subaru Forester 2.5i 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Bluetooth is really bad, breaks up when using the phone or MP3"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"OEM radio originally paired by android phone, once Android version was updated, radio stopped pairing. There is no way to update radio firmware - I had to replace the radio unit to conform with state 'hands free' law"

Anonymous, NH (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This problem is relative to the previously mentioned Bluetooth issue"

Anonymous, GA (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"would not work changed radio still having problems with it suburu has terrible electronics"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"This car as delivered still has serious compatibility issues with iOS (iPhone) Apps. Some apps that play audio or podcasts will simply be muted by the car after 2 seconds and there is no remedy, USB or bluetooth. iTunes and Audible do work, however, although with the ubiquitous autoplay feature when connected that you can't stop and interferes with navigation apps. Too bad, audio quality is excellent with all of the speaker options installed."

Michael D., NJ (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"smart phone music keeps dropping or not pair"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"No matter how many times I fix it, the music interface seems to reconnect to my phone and start playing music even when I don't open the music app. For a permanent fix I put the radio on AUX and connect with a cord instead"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Subaru Forester Limited 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Difficulty latching onto phone audio. When I'm playing a song on any website, the radio goes to mute. When I turn the volume to get out of mute the audio pauses. I hit play and it mutes. Endless cycle."

Jay E., NY (2014 Subaru Forester)

"Bluetooth poorly designed."

"same problem of connectivity with I-phone 5S"

Anonymous, QC (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Unreliable; inaccurate (weird routings; not "direct"); Doesn't "learn" when I change routes; insists on previous routing. I have to use my iPhone as a backup or primary routing"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Outdated. Very poor directions. Directions make little sense. It is either a 2012 or 2010 GPS. HAD trouble with several things not working continuously until an accident in Dec. 1016. After fender with sensors was replaced works with out interuptions. Much different in function. Had 13 dead battery events after purchaaed in 14 months. After battery replaced, only 3 battery no starts, all my fault. Basically I had a lemon with no help from dealer. The dealership personnel changed nearly"

Carolyn M., TX (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The in dash screen is a touch screen. Most of the main functions of the unit can only be accessed via the touchscreen. The right 1/4 of my touch screen no longer responds to touch which makes navigating some menus and selecting some options impossible."

Eric G., VA (2014 Subaru Forester XT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The GPS system and everything related to it never worked well from the bigining. It has been the biggest disappointment in the car. Very difficult to program and use. Subaru has apparently used a different system since 2014. They should have used Garmin technology from the start and had a recall as well!"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Subaru Forester Premium 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"At start of 2018, GPS could not find data on SD card, making it impossible to find car's location. When visiting dealer's service center for scheduled maintenance, they could not troubleshoot because they did not have a similar model car in for service with which to swap/check if it was the SD card, drive, or radio. They suggested I buy a new SD card for $265. You can imagine my reaction. [Interestingly, I didn't get the customary survey after my visit. What I got were discount coupons for the same services I had just had done.] Will go to a larger dealership for next service. Using stand alone TomTom from previous car in the meantime. Coworkers have told me that the antenna cable may be bad (corroded) as satellite radio and FM reception has also begun to deteriorate, and they have had similar issues on different vehicles."

"Original system failed, it had to be completely replaced."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Does not reset if I change route or discover unusable turn; has taken me illogical routes or directions. I have stopped using the in-das;h GPS. I have used maps or, occasionally, my IPhone. As with most new cars, the in-dash visuals are terrible: Lighting control is inadequate, screens can't be read in sunlight, screens take driver vision off the road. Thank heavens I have 373-sight."

Norman P., AZ (2014 Subaru Forester Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The system lags and takes forever to load. I have taken it to the dealer and it wasn't fixed. I have stopped using the GPS since it won't load. I wish they could fix it but whatever they are doing hasn't fixed the problem."

"I was able to receive text messages on my car when I first got it. Now after apple updates iOS, the car stopped getting text messages any more. There is no update available from Subaru to fix this problem"

"Bluetooth disconnects from phone during a call, and you can't reconnect. You also can't talk on the phone, because it thinks bluetooth is active. If you hang up, Bluetooth has hung the whole radio system (displays "TALKING" on the screen), so I can't turn on the radio, or do anything else with it. The dealer has updated the software 2X, but that doesn't fix it. They told me my only option was to replace the Radio! Had this problem with my last Subaru, with an Android phone"

The dealer acknowledged that they know there is (was?) an incompatibility problem between the Subaru system and iPhones. They replaced our entire radio in an attempt to fix it. They claimed that this cost them $5000 but didn't charge us although they did the exchange in 2016 (our car is a 2014 Forrester). The new radio didn't"

"I have a Motorola phone that I bought about 6 months ago and my previous phone was Motorola. The BT will play music from my phone well and it connects with other phones for calls. With my phones, it does not sync when I get in and when I can sync, the voice quality is so poor, I can't understand the other person. The system will also drop sync and resync multiple times in a 30 minute drive. I have been to Subaru and asked if they ever update their systems and they have said no. This may have more to do with the Motorola phone than the Forrester but they don't work together. I have bought an after market BT speaker that does work and removed the car from my phone."

Software update fixes

"Some software fixes do not do things that you like, they are fixes for problems using software as a low cost alternative to replacing a part and reprogramming a computer. Example The XT was having issues of preignition. In conjunction with EPA they de-tuned the car, which mad it less responsive, I purchased it because I like the fact that it had no turbo lag. I believe it was due to many people not using the correct fuel and faulty knock sensors. They should have redesigned the knock sensors and reprogrammed the computer algorithm so when the the knock sensors sensed combustion chamber irregularity the computer would pull back and adjust timing and fuel mixture when it sensed engine detonation."

"Both control arms had play, one severe. The bushings were also torn. The dealer initially replaced the left control arm and bushings under my extended warranty. They also did an alignment. They recommended that the right control arm also be replaced but stated it was not bad enough to be covered under warranty. My warranty only had two month remaining so I was told to bring it back in two months and it would probably be bad enough to be covered. I wrote Subaru about the problem and they opened a case. When I brought it back two months later (last week), although I had only driven 300 miles, I was told that the problem was bad enough to,be covered under warranty. They replaced the right control arm and bushings, did another alignment and also replaced the right sway bar links."

"I was driving home, made a left turn, heard and felt a pop and the rear end became sqirrelly. I got home and jacked up the car and removed the tire. The right rear spring had broken and fell off the strut mount. I looked at the other side for comparison and was shocked to find that spring was also completely broken but hadn't fallen off the strut mount yet. I had the car towed to Falcone Subaru. I explained what I found and told them I believe the springs were defective. I told them that I would like some financial help from Subaru in fixing the issue. They said they would have an adjuster look at it but made no promises. I wrote CR and asked for agencies I could report my concerns too. I contacted Subaru of America and NHSTA to report my concerns. CR gave me 3 other agencies to report my issue. I thought I would wait to see what response I received before contacting the other agencies. A couple of days later, Falcone Subaru contacted me and said Subaru agreed to replace all the parts associated with the issue at no charge. I am very happy Subaru took my concerns to heart and fix what I thought was an obvious safety defect. I am very grateful and happy with my treatment by Subaru of America and Falcone Subaru. They did an excellent job and a week later, I picked up the car. Subaru must really care about customer safety and making it right. Extremely grateful this didn't drag out."

"I was driving home from work, made a left turn, heard a pop and the car wouldn't track a straight line. The car meandered randomly. I took the back roads instead of the highway to get home because the car was less controllable at higher speeds.I stopped by a NAPA on the way home and called our mechanic. I described the issue and he said "go check if the car is leaning / ride height on one wheel". I noticed the right rear tire was much lower. The mechanic said you most likely have a broken spring or strut. When I got home, i jacked the car up and noticed the spring was broken and fell off the strut plate. I took off the other 3 tires and examined the other springs too. To my surprise, the left rear spring was also completely broken but was still on the strut plate. I them contacted CR to ask for advise on how to file a claim. In my 30+ years of driving I have never had a spring break, let alone 2. I thought it was defective. CR gave me excellent advise. I contacted Falcone Subaru and explained the issue. They said they would consider a price reduction on fixing it but offer no guarantee. I had the car towed there. One of their agents inspected the car and 2 days later said they would fix both springs for free. A week later, the car was fixed. I am very happy with CR for the advise I was given. I am also very happy that Subaru replaced both rears strut assemblies for free. Subaru obviously values its customers. I had problems in the past with Chevrolet and they told me to "fuck off or get a lawyer". Now I will never bey a Chevrolet again."

I noted a loud humming sound coming from my rear wheels and my mileage seemed to be going down despite maintenance, etc. being kept up and no other obvious issues. Finally took 2002 in and learned that the wheel bearings had "frozen" in the rear wheels. I was told that I was lucky worse damage didn't occur, i.e. snapped axle shaft. "There have been problems with the evaporator on this vehicle since 2015 with three repairs/replacements. I learned in the last week that there is a Subaru Service bulletin and Subaru will replace the a/c if one knows about the Service bulletin (new friends told me about the service bulletin - I have not seen it but after contacting Subaru National Office with the service bulletin notice, the a/c in my friend's 2014 Subaru Forester was replaced no charge)"

"Refrigerant leaked into cabin through the vents at 32,000 miles. Leak originated from the Evap coil. Leak re-appeared at 52,000 miles only 24 months later and requires $1,200 worth of out of warranty repairs. Would not purchase vehicle again."

Heater system

"the air vents fall down. I wedge a piece of cardboard in them to keep them open"

Jay E., NY (2014 Subaru Forester)

"In very cold weather (we live in the Chicago Suburbs) the car takes an extremely long time to warm up. Additionally, the air volume directed to the front driver footwell is insufficient to warm the driver's feet even after the car finally does warm up. This problem has persisted since the first winter we have owned the car. It has been to the dealer 3 times and each time we have been told all is normal. I contacted Subaru and they we of little help. They suggested we take the car to the dealer and leave it overnight but when we attempted to do so, the dealer was uncooperative and could not provide a loaner car. We do have an extended warranty. We have pretty much given up on getting this problem corrected. It appears to be a design flaw and this problem shows up in discussion groups online as one of the complaints about this car. Subaru disputes this claim. This problem plus the concerns about engine oil consumption and transmission problems (both now covered under a manufacturer's extended warranty) have made us decide to not purchase a Subaru in the future."

"According to the technicians, the problem occurred due to the type of refrigerant now installed in all newer vehicles of all makes and models. It was expensive to repair because of where the AC unit is installed. The entire engine had to be removed to access the unit. Apparently, this is also a problem with most makes of more compact vehicles."
