The goal was to marry the look and feel of classic 1960s British sports cars with the quality and reliability of modern Japanese models--and this nimble, fun-to-drive roadster meets it admirably. Though it leans in corners a bit more than did earlier Miatas, the latest version rides marginally better. Its twin-camshaft Four is willing and responsive, if not overly powerful, and the stubby manual shifter is a joy to use.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"this is a reliable fun car that you'll enjoy for many years."

WILLIAM B., PA (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Excellent low center gravity, corners well. Rack and pinion precision steering. Good 4 wheel disc brakes. Excellent acceleration."

Anonymous, IN (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It won't win any road races but acceleration is responsive for the small engine and it handles like a gekko on curves which is why you buy a convertible roadster in the first place, to drive along the ocean wih the top down, or on twisty mountain roads."

KELLY B., CA (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Always a smile on my face."

THOMAS T., MI (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's always fun to drive!"

Anonymous, ON (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is the most fun car to drive ever. The cornering, and shifting is great. The acceleration feels great, even though it doesn't really accelerate incredibly fast, the user experience is of g-force - hard to explain The only thing it compares to in my experience is a 70's era Fiat Spider."

STEVE B., CA (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I love the acceleration, putting it through the gears. It holds the curves in the road like its riding on a track. Feels close to perfection."

IAN P., NY (2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Just a really fun little car to drive."
