The MX-5 Miata is fun to drive, with extraordinary handling and a slick powertrain. The interior is nicely finished and the manual convertible top is simple to operate from behind the wheel. The ride is comfortable for a sports car, although noise levels and cramped quarters make long trips tiresome.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Love the acceleration! This is what gives me the real "Zoom-zoom" that Mazda's are known for. I never worry that I have to wait for the acceleration to kick in. Took the accelerator and the car follows immediately. Handling is good, although regular wheel alignment helps maintain a smooth ride."

Michelle P., ON (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"it's fun to drive"

Anonymous, SC (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This is a drivers car and I love it."

Stan C., AZ (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's a Miata! It is a driving toy. It is all about handling -- not as much about acceleration although that is fine."

Richard E., MI (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"You can drive conservatively or really push the performance and the car does both very well."

Michael P., TX (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handling,but very stiff.Not a long distance Car."

Anonymous, FL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Acceleration and throttle response is very strong. It always seems to be in the right gear. Handling is quick and responsive."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Snappy acceleration, especially in traffic with stick shift. Once I passed a slower car on a two lane road and went from 50 mph to 65 mph without downshifting from 6th gear. The handling is outstanding."

Anonymous, SC (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Very responsive handling, great acceleration."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This car was built for handling and acceleration. It is fun to drive and economic at the same time. The power to weight ratio is very good. My maintenance costs are very low."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"For only a 2L engine with 158 HP and having the 6 speed AT this car really gets up and goes when you put your foot into it and cornering at high speeds it remains very stable and flat. Although it's a very small car it is a bit on the heavy side."

Anonymous, WA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The vehicle is built is handle. It's not a straight line screamer but in turns and in and among traffic it handles great."

Anonymous, DE (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I love a roadster sports car. Short close ratio 6 speed with a short throw gear shift that is smooth as butter. With relatively little horsepower it accelerates smartly and handles lie a true sports car. Hugs the road like a snake."

Anonymous, AB (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Moderate acceleration. Outstanding handling with the heavy duty suspension.."

Anonymous, VA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The MX5 is the best value roadster you can buy anywhere. It is totally reliable & dependable."

Dominick L., IN (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"nothing comparable to handling of this car"

Anonymous, CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The handling is terrific -- better than any other car I've driven. This is the reason to buy a Miata."

Mark R., NC (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I bought the car for daily commuting to work along a curvy, mountain road, and for the enjoyment of driving. This car performs fantastically without costing a fortune. The four-wheel independent suspension grabs the road and handles the curves at speed. It accelerates quickly due to its low weight, even though it is just a 2 liter, 4 cylinder engine. You can really feel the road in this car, and with the top down, you are out in the world."

Anonymous, CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is a great combination of handling and quick acceleration combined with a convertible top and exceptional looks."

H A., MO (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The most fun car to drive ever"

Wally M., CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"My Miata has the best handling and acceleration of any car I’ve ever driven, and I was a police officer for 7 years and have driven many cars during the job. There’s something special about the Miata that just makes you smile when you’re behind the wheel."

Zero E., TX (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"FUN: accelerates like a true sports car, handles like a go-cart on steroids. It makes me enjoy driving again."

James B., PA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"One of the best handling cars of all time. Amazing chassis. OEM suspension is underdamped, but fun as stock. Body roll is high but makes low speeds feel like high speeds. Combined with low ride height and open top, the car feels like you're flying around 100% of the time. Above all, this car is FUN. Plenty of power for canyon and city driving. Horrible gearing for highway cruising (no real overdrive). Likes and needs to rev. Excellent as a momentum car for track use. Great 6sp transmis..."

"Excellent handling, very sporty,"

Roger F., IL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's a sports car... it accelerates smoothly and quickly, and when steering it can levitate sideways. It also brakes faster than anything else out on the road."

Jeanette W., OH (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Spouses' vehicle. I normally don't drive this vehicle. My wife likes the responsive handling and acceleration."

"Very satisfied with handling, overall looks and driving experience."

Anonymous, NY (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's a Mazda. Read your own reports. It is everything a sports car is supposed to be, and also reliable. It makes me feel like I did when I was 10 years old and took my first ride in a go-cart. After driving for over 40 years, I actually enjoy driving again (when in this car)."

JAMES B., PA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This car is always a fun and satisfying drive. we have taken a 3 week 7,500 mile trek in our Miata and were never bored. It's now 9 years old and still looks and drives like new. if your perspective on driving is, "Its not how fast your driving, its how you drive fast." the Miata will reward you with years of reliability an fun"

DOMINICK L., IN (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's a blast to drive with the top down. Top up, it drives just as well but it's very noisy."

Anonymous, FL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's by far the coolest lowest price true sport car on the planet!"

Anonymous, OR (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is not a dragster, however, the engine is very responsive and controllable. I've driven several sports cars, and this MX-5 is the best handling vehicle of all. It's fun to drive."

LAWRENCE S., TX (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I have to take Advil when I drive my Miata because my jaws hurt from grinning!"

RICHARD C., SC (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Good acceleration and terrific handling. Drives like it is on rails. PURE FUN."

"I own the grand touring MX-5. It is designed as a drivers car. The road feel, balance and handling in general are superb. I totally agree with every review I have ever seen of the Miata line, they are fun to drive."

Anonymous, AZ (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Just a fun car"

RICHARD T., MI (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"You don't buy a Miata for comfort. The seats aren't made for long trips. The retractable hard top cuts down a lot on the noise but top down it is very noisy, which is just what I expected. This is a true sports car so the ride is stiff and can wear you down on longer trips"

Anonymous, AB (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"As a small person 5'2" the car seats are comfortable enough for long distances, provide good back support and are moveable. Having to pull so close to the front panel in order to touch the pedals can be problematic though because there are sharp edges which can catch your knees. The car is built very low to the ground. We are in our mid-fifties so this is not a problem (unless we have been driving for several hours). For older drivers it is problematic to both get up from and lower oneself into the bucket seats. Since the MX-5 Miata is a soft top, the noise when driving is fairly high. We retro-fitted a hard top and the hard top does lessen some of the noise. I find generally that the windows don't lower the noice level significantly (this contrasts with other Mazda's that we have owned, where windows and doors were secure and greatly lessened air noise)."

Michelle P., ON (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Noise level tends to be high when driving. It seems to be due, in large part, to the tires. It comes with run-flat tires (no room for a spare). I have used different winter tires on this car (not run-flat), and they are much quieter. Seat comfort is stiff but adequate. One can adjust seatback angle and forward/back (no height). For my body, I can adjust it for me (and it must be in one exact position), but there is no "memory." For service, the seat setting often gets altered, so I have t..."

Anonymous, CO (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The older I get, the more difficult it is to get in and out of the car. However, this is a beautiful car and I'm not yet willing to give it up."

Anonymous, IL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The seats have no lumbar support. They are also on the small side causing a sore butt on a trip."

Bruce S., WI (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"seats are hard, not enough padding in the seat bottom"

MARK D., CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Good support from seats. Many strange noises. The passenger seat spring rattle, the dash squeaks and the suspension make funny noises when backing up."

BRUCE S., BC (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"In cool/cold weather, the hard top squeaks and crackles. I haven't found a way to stop it. (It can be annoying, but it isn't a real problem.)"

Anonymous, CO (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This car is really loud on the road and it gets tiring."

KELLEY M., CA (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"electric heating element in drivers seat would not turn off. Mazda dealer could not solve the problem and recommended a new seat. I took the seat out and cut the wire. no more hot seat."

WALLACE C., FL (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"With the top up this is a noisy car."

JEANNETTE H., NB (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

What Owners Say

PAUL B., NY (2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Buying Mazdas seems to be very difficult. We ordered this car with a different color and interior, put down our money, and waited. Then they said it would be a couple more months. Then a couple MORE months. Then they said, "Good news, you have to wait a couple more months, but it will be next year's model. Instead, we drove from Dayton to Indianapolis and bought the car in a different color. The car being replaced was dying too fast for us to wait any longer. But since we've had it, we love the"
