The MX-5 Miata is fun to drive, with extraordinary handling and a slick powertrain. The interior is nicely finished and the manual convertible top is simple to operate from behind the wheel. The ride is comfortable for a sports car, although noise levels and cramped quarters make long trips tiresome.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

“It's just a fun car to drive.”

Anonymous, SC (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“The acceleration is good but not excellent for a sport car but it has all the power I want in a car. The handling is excellent. It is really a fun car to drive.”

WALLY M., IA (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Fun to drive. Great handling, only downside is noise level. This is my second Miata, (other 2003 SE) but I notice the road noise much more in this one. I'm 5'11" and I'm starting to feel cramped in the cabin after a year and half and the seat is becoming uncomfortable. I am now looking for a different car that is more friendly to my back.”

Anonymous, OK (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“The automatic gearshift is designed so that you can effectively drive it as a manual shift vehicle minus the clutch. There are 6 forward gears and a speed shifter. An automatic gear shift on a sports car misses the point of having a sports car.”

Anonymous, VA (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Handles great and is fast for the small engine that is in the car. It's a blast to drive...”

Anonymous, PA (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“The Miata drives like it has glue on it's tires, handles very well in corners. A really fun car to drive, will never sell it!”

RICHARD M., ON (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Love the way it drives! It's a stick shift so handling is easy/great and pick-up is fast.”

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

NA

What Owners Say

“The seats are could be more comfortable on long drives. The car is noisy even with the top up but this is expected on a soft top convertible. The heater is excellent even in extremely could mid western winters.”

WALLY M., IA (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“The comfort is better than one would expect for a roadster except that road and wind noise is pronounced at highway speeds.”

CARL R., OK (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“On a long trip seats become uncomfortable.”

GLENN R., NY (2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

“Leather seats are a little soft and I have to "push" myself up once in a while to have a proper position. Noise is somewhat loud with hard top closed .”
