The Miata is a fun-to-drive, low-slung little roadster, with pinpoint handling, instant power delivery, and a crisp manual gearbox. Excellent fuel economy is an extra bonus. While it remains very tight, the cabin has grown a little more livable over the years. The ride is surprisingly tolerable, but cabin noise can grow wearying on long cruises.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Driving dynamics of the Miata are wonderful. Reminding one of old english convertibles with out the horrible reliability issues. Fastest car no, best in the corners no, fun affordable car to push quickly through a twisty road and enjoy it's response to your inputs... hands down in the top ten. Probably the top five if you emphasize price."

Kevin B., IL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handling"

Gene S., AZ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The acceleration and handling are excellent. The car corners exceptionally well with little lean. Although a small 4 cylinder engine, I have no problem accelerating past other cars even on hills."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Drives like the sports car that it is."

S B., AZ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Fantastic handling, excellent acceleration, super 6 speed manual transmission, everything."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Fun to drive"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The positive road feel through the steering wheel is wonderful and the acceleration boost (turbo) is very helpful in passing and avoiding other vehicles who move in on us because they cannot always see us due to low profile and small size of the Miata."

Fred R., AZ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"it accelerates and handles great"

Anonymous, LA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Very tight handling on dry roads. Total disaster on ice and not much better on snow."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"What a fun fun car to tool around town. Marvelous for that Sunday drive."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It is very quick and handles like it is glued to the road."

Wayne R., GA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's great fun to drive. I enjoy putting the top down and going anywhere."

Morgan M., NC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"outstanding response in acceleration and steering. Just plain fun to drive any road straight or curve, up or down hill. Just one fun filled auto."

Dennis D., VA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Love the car the speed and acceleration. The phone system is a little bit of a challenge."

Richard S., SC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's the second Miata I've owned and despite being a bit cramped and not my favorite car for a long trip or spring in traffic, it is a blast to drive with the top down. Top up and you hear all the noises and rattles in the car, but top down it puts a smile on your face. Top up or down, the connection to the road and perfect reaction to every command is awesome. For me, there's no driving experience quite like it. When Mazda finally adds a real hard top to the latest generation MX-5, I'll be upgrading. Until then, I'm loving my used PRHT."

Ryan S., CA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Quick and cornors like on rails"

Joseph O., FL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Although not as fast off the line as my old RX7, this does well and I feel as though I could drive circles around other cars while traveling down the highway."

KEVIN B., IL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Best handling sports car in this price range."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Accelerates verey well; handling is tight and precise. It's a plwasure to drive."

LOIS T., AZ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"There are a lot of ways I could describe the handling on the Miata... precise, sure footed, nimble, etc., But the best way is just to say it is fun! This car is a joy to drive."

TRACY R., WV (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Steering, cornering, and responsiveness all good."

SCOTT M., CA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Acceleration and handling are both superb! A used Mata is the most fun you can have driving for the dollar."

RON S., NC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Very quick and nimble."

CHARLES P., FL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The Miata lives up to it's reputation. excellent handling, hangs in the curves, accelerates neatly when asked."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handling is excellent...a fun car to drive."

Nancy N., TN (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This car is a hoot. You wear it rather than ride in it. When driven with appropriate rubber (Michelin Pilot AS3) it hugs the road and corners like it's on rails. It is under powered, which is just fine as I'm and old fart who knows his age in his head but remains 20 in his heart - more power and I'd likely kill myself in it. It is noisy, the ride can be choppy on substandard roads, and it is not reasonable to own as the climate requires I winter store it. But you can't buy the experience cheaper..."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Good acceleration, great handling makes it a joy to drive. I'm always smiling when I drive my Miata!"

Ron S., NC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's so much fun to drive. I love the 6 speed manual transmission. The handling is amazing as is the engine power and torque. I had a 92 Miata and this 2012 is light years ahead of the 92 in every way. And I love the rag top, so easy to use and fun to drive."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The most fun you can have driving a vehicle!! This is the 3rd Miata I've owned and there is no car more trouble free and fun to drive. PERIOD!!"

Steve B., UT (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Handling is excellent and it has incredibly good pickup."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Steven L., NJ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"My 2012 Mazda MX-5 generates loud road noise that makes having a conversation between the driver and passenger difficult. Hearing the radio or CD player is also difficult."

John H., NC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Seats are not great past a few hours. Poor ergonomics hurts an otherwise wonderfully designed machine. General discomfort sets in after about 3 hours. After 4 you just need to get out and move about before continuing. Airflow in and about the cockpit is wonderfully handled buy the aerodynamics, window positions, HVAC controls and heated seats. If you read the owners manual and understand the car it's a wonderful convertible experience."

Anonymous, ME (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Stiff ride, can be good around corners but not for long drives. Seats are decent, nothing special. Noise level is good since the convertible is a hard top."

Michael H., FL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It has reasonably good seats It is moisy inside with the top dow."

Wayne R., GA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Road noise is high but expected in a small roadster."

Morgan M., NC (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"To nosy at highway speeds"

Joseph O., FL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The power retractable hardtop is wonderful. It works up or down in 14 seconds, and when up (in the blazing Arizona sun) it keeps the interior much cooler than a typical "ragtop" convertible. Mazda is making a mistake - I believe - with their newest design that has eliminated the fully retractable top. I they would do well to interview all of the current owners of this style, and I believe you will find consensus that they have walked away from perfection in their pursuit of newer styling."

FRED R., AZ (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This is a great roadster. The seats are very comfortable in a firm way"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Wish it had adjustable lumbar support and a fully adjustable passenger seat,"

MICHAEL J., UT (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"The Mazda is a superb vehicle to drive up to 200 miles or so. Longar distances become more tireing."

ROBERT M., NY (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"It's a two seater and small. What else could on say."

ALAN C., NY (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Sun visors do not rotate to the left or right, merely up and down. However, the hinge for up/down rotation is on the wrong edge of the sun visor, minimizing its usefulness when the top is down."

MARC K., CA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"seat belts do not adjust enough for a small person. They go across the neck."

CHARA M., FL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"I am 6'1" and I don't fit Diving this car is uncomfortable for me [it is my wife's car]"

What Owners Say

"I can't imagine a more fun car to drive at even twice the price. And it is fun to drive."

WILLIAM S., PA (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"This car is a gas. Not as fast as the i3, but great to drive around in with the top down--just leave this in the garage in the winter around Chicagoland."

Kevin B., IL (2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata)

"Because of the engineering and "fun to drive" qualities, this is bought for a good and reasonable cost."
